It takes courage to be an individual people look at you They stare: and you can read their minds Look at her, can you believe that? They'll ostracize you, because you dare to be different You'Il wear that hat you like so much You know, the one with the purple feathers Some of you were born with a difference you are the wrong color, or the wrong race But think a minute who should decide what's right or wrong? lt is just an assumption we make, an, impostion, or is it just because ? And what about those of you who laugh and yes, we all are guilty of it We quietly smile at the obese or snicker to ourselves when someone else wears the hat with the purple feathers Think about it, you might realize that we're all different wheather we laugh, or snicker or cry we're all individuals Theme 5 6 Theme lndividuality. . . ...is not something that can be bought, sold or given away. It is colored through the years. individuality is accumulated characteristics. Each one taken from an event in one's life or a dream which the individual hopes to accomplish. An individual receives acknowledgement from people around them by friendship. Each of these friends appreciate the individual for their characteristics. An individual's self identity and characteristics are worth more than any conceivable fortune. For each of us to acquire individuality we must live our lives as separate people. 1- i Q .XA tQ2- ffm is:eMigf,,,.,:,.J U 5P?V'y5c,,5Af,f Each of us must etch, color, and paint our lives with the exotic colors which represent our individuality. '- Administration faces overcrowding problem Overcrowding in the Maranas district was one of many problems faced by the school board and admin- istration this year. The total district had a 6.2 percent gain over last year. The high school itself had a 10.7 percent gain from May to September. The cost to provide space for all Marana students, which required a bond election, is !Sl,470,000. In order to meet the rising enrollment at the high school, the school board and administrators proposed additional facilities. Included in the proposals were vo- cational shops and a land lab to provide for added enrollment. The cost of these additions were estimat- ed at S575,000. Additional problems tackled by the school board and administration were medical insurance, student tar- dies and institution of a new grading system. 1. Dr. Havens, superintendent, works diligently on forms. 2. This year's school board members are Fred Hill, Harry Hansen, Max Green, Daniel Post and Brad DeSpain. 3. Dr. Foster pauses in the library to think about proposals made by students. 4. Mr. Miller approves student activities requisitions. 5. Social, science, math studies enrich students Due to a new law, Marana's Adaptive Education department broadened into a well-developed classroom situation. Students take math, science, English and other classes, with a focus on the needs of that individual. Math and science departments experienced an all-time high in the enrollment of advanced classes. The departments plan to formulate new advanced classes in the near future to meet stu- dent demand. Teachers in the social studies field were new or returning, with these teachers came new ideas to interest their pupils in their subjects. 1. Mr. Calkins and Ms. Cutler assist in counseling. 2. The shop teachers stressed the safe use of welding machines, and the fine art of working on and rebuilding automobile engines. The home economics teachers taught child development to students, as well as cooking and sewing. For the first time at Marana High School, students were provided with co-educational physical education classes. This year's council had to overcome the difficulty of not having a class, how- ever, this problem was counteracted by having a ro- tating meeting schedule, where Student Council mem- bers would be excused from a different class every two weeks to attend Student Council meetings. This year's council took on a new advisor, Mr. Eric Videbeck. whose immeasurable help aided in the coun- cil in achieving goals. One such goal was the juke box. After three years of planning and persuading a juke box was acquired for student enjoyment. The juke box could be used before school, during break, lunch and activity period. The juke box was not the total sum of Student Coun- ciI's effort to supply entertainment and relaxation for students. They also sponsored dances, rock concerts, spirit boosters and Up with People. Student Council does not only sponsor entertainment for the students, but also for the community. One such event was the carnival. The carnival, sponsored by Student Council, raises money for scholarships for graduating seniors. Admittedly this year's Student Council had many failures and success, but as Donnine Pierson, student body president, commented, This year's Student Council representatives were dedicated to working hard, even against challenging odds. Hopefully Marana High School will see many more such dedicated people in their student government. 1. Munson Steed, Junior Class Xpresident, explains a requisition with action and voice. 2. The Tigers dropped their first three games against Gilbert, Eloy, and CDO before upsetting the Flowing Wells Caballeros at their homecoming by a spectacular 31-19. The next games against Douglas and Safford ended in Tiger defeats. The Tigers found themselves another homecoming to upset by beating Globe 20-12. The final two games, in- cluding Marana's own homecoming, resulted in losses. Injuries forced two players, Bill Post and Wayne Jackson, to miss most of the season. Sidelined for several games were Jim Somerville, Eddie Payne, Fernie Lopez, Art Rodri- guez and Larry Walker. By the Tigers' final game, quarter- back Craig Bratton and several others were out for the season, leaving a varsity squad of 18 and a number of junior varsity players to face San Maneul. Though team efforts were often futile, individual perfor- mances were recognized by the Class AA South conference. Named to the first team defense and the second team offensive units was Carl Lee. Serving as host for the conference divisionals did not bring the Tigers good luck as they still placed last. The AA south was a very powerful division this year, according to Coach Brady. Flowing Wells domi- nated the tough division all year as they placed first in the AA South, with CDO finishing second. We were a better team than our record C12-215 showed, stated Coach Brady. He went on to say that seven of the nine runners who completed the season will be returning to next year's squad, so we did have mostly underclassmen competing and con- sistently finishing in the top ten. Basically it was an inconsistancy of our top three runners to place high. 1, Runners anxiously await the sound of the gun to start the race. 2.
