The 1932 bond issue of S152,000,000.00 was sed to build and equip the third unit of the Sen- or High, the third unit of West Richmond, ami to urchase ground and build the first unit of the ew Lincoln School for Negroes. ln November 1933, C.W.A. fCivil Works dministrationj work started. This government roject enabled the district to grade grounds at ew Lincoln and Senior High, enlarge the track rom 18 to 25 feet, and erect a stone wall around the track. During the 1930's the depression halted further expansion of physical facilities in the school dis- trict except work which could be done through W.P.A. tWorks Progress Administrationl and P.W.A. tPublic Works Administrationj projects, on three occasions bond issue payments were refunded textendedl because of a shortage of funds. Here are a few highlights in the history of our schools from 1910 to 1925: 1. 1910 - County Court designated the dis- trict as the Maplewood City Schools. 2. 1915 tJulyJ - Mr. Robertson resigned as superintendent and was succeeded by Wil- liam Schlueter. 3. 1916 - Addition of four rooms and gymna- sium was built at East Richmond. Land was purchased on Dale Avenue. First two rooms of Lincoln School tNegroJ were built. A sixty foot lot was purchased adjoining Sut- ton School. A whole block of ground was purchased for the new high school. The first unit of the high school, now Junior High, was constructed. Superintendent Schleutcr was succeeded by Joshua Richmond in Sep- tember. 4. 1921 - a second unit of the high school at Sutton and Lyndover was added. 5. 1923 - the Glenn tract was purchased for Valley playgrounds. - In 1925, the present high school ground on Manchester was purchased. Also a bond issue pro- vided funds for the second unit of Lincoln School, which served Negro children, kindergarten through eighth grade. High School Negro stu- dents attended the Douglas School in Webste Groves until the 1954 Supreme Court decision, at which time the high schools were integrated. The 1928 bond issue was used to start the first unit of the present Senior High School, the sec- ond unit at West Richmond and the third unit at Lincoln. In 1929, a bond issue was used entirely for the second unit of the Senior High School. The 1930 bond issue of 585,000.00 was used to equip the senior high building, to build bleacher seats and field houses, and to build the track. Mr. Joshua E. Richmond, who served as super- intendent during the fifteen years of the most rapid growth of the Maplewood-Ricllnlond Heights District, resigned and was succeeded by G. E. Never in the history of Vluplewood-Rieh- mnnd Heights high school has there been an athletic team to compare with the 1936 foot- hall team. Composed of boys who played. fought and ehunnned together since the seventh grade , they made their last year at Maplewood one in which they gained newspaper and radio fame from coast to coast. ln facing the toughest competition a Maple- wood team had ever faced. the team ehal lenged high school teams all over the country The teams accepting were Hillsboro and Johnston City. Illinois: Muskogee. Oklahoma: and Davenport. Iowa. These teams were all defeated by Maplewood with the exception of Muskogee which gained a 7-7 tie. This team scored a total of 200 points and remained un scored-upon in their first five games. This magnificent team. in compiling their season record of 9.0-1. had outstanding scores which reached as high as 5-l and 53 to nothing. The total points sc-ored for the season were Maple wood 277. opponents 67. The quarlerhack that sparked this great 1 team to their victories was Paul Christman later known as l'itchin, Paul when he he came an All-American at Missouri University
