They therefore afford a great wealth of material for memories cherished in riper years. This annual, it is our prayer, may serve as an adequate reminder in future years of the joys we would not forget of our High School Days. - The Annual Staff. There probably isn't a student at the school that doesn't know Mrs. Ford, and for that matter, there is probably no student that Mrs. Ford doesn't know. V ,ggi 'A 3' 5. ik ' All i. 1 f 'la 1 Y, ,. I OUR SCHOOL 1907- 1976 Nearly 157 years ago, in 1819, a young man twenty-one years of age, James L. Sutton, Jr., made his way out from New Jersey to St. Louis to help his older brother in his blacksmith shop at Second and Spruce Streets. Seven years later he had saved enough money to buy a 134 acre farm five or six miles southwest of St. Louis. It was part of a three square mile Spanish land grant bought from the heirs of Charles Gratiot for a dollar and a bit per acre. Ten years later he bought another 54 acres, this time paying 57.50 per acre. St. Louis was growing. In the 1830's he moved with his wife and child to a log cabin on the farm. As his children came of school age, he gave an acre of ground for a school house on the Man- chester Road six miles from the St. Louis Court- house near McCausland Avenue. This was the beginning of the Maplewood- Richmond Heights School District. It was called the Washington Institute when it opened in 1840. Later it was known as the Benton Station School. After the first steam locomotive west of the Mis- sissippi River had made its historic five mile run from the Fourteenth Street Station to Chelten- ham Station in ten minutes in the year 1852, Ben- ton Station was soon opened a mile west of Chel- tenham, at the site of the school on Manchester Road. The school nearby was given in time, also the name of Senator Thomas Hart Benton, a trus- tee of the St. Louis public school lands and cham- pion of free public education as well as of an intercontinental railroad. This early school district was Township 6, Dis- trict 4. It was three times larger than the size o the present Maplewood-Richmond Height School District. Its limits included a part of th Webster Groves District on the south and south west, a large portion of the City of St. Louis an extended as far north as Clayton Road. Most of i lay within Sutton's farm, as did the City o Maplewood, founded later. The present Maplewood-Richmond Height district boundaries were defined when the City 0 St. Louis seceded from the County in 1877 James Sutton, Jr., who had served on the schoo board for the old district of Township 6, District from 1869, was instrumental in organizing th School District of Maplewood and became Presi dent of the first school board for this county are serving until 1908. During Mr. Sutton's time two story frame building, which stood in th woods west of Big Bend Road and probably o Comfort Avenue, was rented as the first school. School was opened in February of 1877. The school directors purchased the old Valle School site and erected a one room building, which was opened in 1888. Another room was added in 1889. The school became known as the Bartold Valley School, the name later bein shortened to the Valley School. In 1892 these two rooms were replaced by an eight room two story frame building, and one of the two first rooms was moved to 7553 Woodland Avenue. 1901 saw the first brick building - a four room addition in front of the eight frame rooms at Valley School. The fast growing community held an election in March, 1906, and changed from a rural school dis- Q-V. ict with three directors to a village school district ith six directors. The new board decided to tablish what was then termed tlu'ee ward schools one at Valley, one at the north end and another t the south end of the district. 330,000.00 was oted for the purpose of purchasing two school ites and erecting and equipping a four room brick building on each site. Thus the East Richmond and the Sutton schools came into existence. These schools were opened to pupils in November 1906. Miss Clara Wilder was the first superintend- entg Miss Anna Jennings, first principal of Val- leyg Miss Anita Bohnsack, first principal of East Richmondg Miss Julia Brossard, first principal of Sutton. The pupils finishing the eighth grade who wanted a high school education had to pay tuition in St. Louis and other districts, so in 1907 the board established the first high school with Corne- lia Brossard in charge of all classes. This high school was started in a one story frame building to the rear of the eight room frame building at the .V . .-...A t ...W - 4. This building had been built for the overflow of third grade pupils before Sutton and East Richmond Schools were built. An urgent need for a second teacher was soon brought to the board's attention, and a partition was erected in this one frame building, and it became a two' teacher high school in 1908. Wil- liam Robertson replaced Miss Clara Wilder as Superintendent in 1908. In 1909, a 345,000.00 bond issue was voted. The two story frame building at Valley was razed and a brick addition with laboratory on the third lfloor was built onto the brick building erected in 1901. Domestic Science fnow Home Economicsj, Manual Training, Music and Art were started. With this program the Maplewood District became one of the first in St. Louis County to offer a High School Program. Until 1909 there was no provision for education of Negro children in the comnnmity. In that year the board rented the building on Dale Avenue, which is now the Church of the Living God, as a Negro school. 1925 Orchestra 1930 Orchestra 1930 M-RH Band Joshua E. Richmond E. R. Adams G. E. Dille N Milton W. Bierbaum Here are a few highlights in the history of our schools from 1910 to 1925: 1. 1910 - County Court designated the dis- trict as the Maplewood City Schools. 2. 1915 tJulyJ - Mr. Robertson resigned as superintendent and was succeeded by Wil- liam Schlueter. 3. 1916 - Addition of four rooms and gymna- sium was built at East Richmond. Land was purchased on Dale Avenue. First two rooms of Lincoln School tNegroJ were built. A sixty foot lot was purchased adjoining Sut- ton School. A whole block of ground was purchased for the new high school. The first unit of the high school, now Junior High, was constructed. Superintendent Schleutcr was succeeded by Joshua Richmond in Sep- tember. 4. 1921 - a second unit of the high school at Sutton and Lyndover was added. 5. 1923 - the Glenn tract was purchased for Valley playgrounds. - In 1925, the present high school ground on Manchester was purchased. Also a bond issue pro- vided funds for the second unit of Lincoln School, which served Negro children, kindergarten through eighth grade. High School Negro stu- dents attended the Douglas School in Webste Groves until the 1954 Supreme Court decision, at which time the high schools were integrated. The 1928 bond issue was used to start the first unit of the present Senior High School, the sec- ond unit at West Richmond and the third unit at Lincoln. In 1929, a bond issue was used entirely for the second unit of the Senior High School. The 1930 bond issue of 585,000.00 was used to equip the senior high building, to build bleacher seats and field houses, and to build the track. Mr. Joshua E. Richmond, who served as super- intendent during the fifteen years of the most rapid growth of the Maplewood-Ricllnlond Heights District, resigned and was succeeded by G. E. Dille, July 1, 1931. - fb 'VII JS The 1932 bond issue of S152,000,000.00 was sed to build and equip the third unit of the Sen- or High, the third unit of West Richmond, ami to urchase ground and build the first unit of the ew Lincoln School for Negroes. ln November 1933, C.W.A. fCivil Works dministrationj work started. This government roject enabled the district to grade grounds at ew Lincoln and Senior High, enlarge the track rom 18 to 25 feet, and erect a stone wall around the track. During the 1930's the depression halted further expansion of physical facilities in the school dis- trict except work which could be done through W.P.A. tWorks Progress Administrationl and P.W.A. tPublic Works Administrationj projects, on three occasions bond issue payments were refunded textendedl because of a shortage of funds. Never in the history of Vluplewood-Rieh- mnnd Heights high school has there been an athletic team to compare with the 1936 foot- hall team. Composed of boys who played. fought and ehunnned together since the seventh grade , they made their last year at Maplewood one in which they gained newspaper and radio fame from coast to coast. ln facing the toughest competition a Maple- wood team had ever faced. the team ehal lenged high school teams all over the country The teams accepting were Hillsboro and Johnston City. Illinois: Muskogee. Oklahoma: and Davenport. Iowa. These teams were all defeated by Maplewood with the exception of Muskogee which gained a 7-7 tie. This team scored a total of 200 points and remained un scored-upon in their first five games. This magnificent team. in compiling their season record of 9.0-1. had outstanding scores which reached as high as 5-l and 53 to nothing. The total points sc-ored for the season were Maple wood 277. opponents 67. The quarlerhack that sparked this great 1 team to their victories was Paul Christman later known as l'itchin, Paul when he he came an All-American at Missouri University 1.5 3 ntl Tlu- lIlm' llrrilsu of Ill-10 , K nf v 'fm II nwlfrls 111:11 x c ' ' -9 J... .. r' Aftixxhn C1 . , ,' . fi ' fp ff 'Q-1 sw 1 . -,xx 'N' r D Fxwr 5 I,- f -Q 'dill 1 I 1 U I .. a U H , ffm mu 11-1 nynl: nn A Ifnzw- vlnulflr piurwfx in ll: hlflll' Ill IUII' 'XNl'b'I'lIlEN YHXH FUN CH.fXNlI'S XX'Tt'rllillg as lvlllli spurt lu-g.:an in Nl-RH in IWW. mul mlm-wl-:pa-ll illll'I'l 5I rapidly. Four years later the voters approved a S625,000.00 bond issue to build the auditorium addition to the Senior High School, and the auditorium addition to the West Richmond School, but this work was not actually done until 1948-50. In 1951 the name of the district was changed from the School Dis- trict of Maplewood to the School District of W A 5 IJPQQL, A .' Maplewood-Richmond Heights. The voters approved a bond issue of Sl,800,000.00 in 1953 to build the new Valley School, an addition to East Richmond, an addi- tion to Lincoln, and to do some work at the Junior High School. The board of education added some money to the building fund since then by selling the old Valley property and the old Lincoln prop- erty. This money made it possible to improve the Junior High School by building a new shop and completely remodeling the library, and also to provide gas heat in all schools which did not at that time have it. Upon retirement as superintendent on July 1, 1960, E. R. Adams was succeeded by Milton E. Bierbaum. On February 21, 1963, voters approved a bond issue of S1,l00,000.00. This money was used for the following purposes: 1. To build a Junior High Cafeteria. 2. To build a completely new school to replace the old Sutton School. 3. To make a number of major changes at the Sen- ior High School, which included the following: A. To build a girl's gymnasium and music department north of the auditorium. B. To build a lobby to the boy's gymnasium. C. To completely remodel the dressing rooms which serve the boy's gymnasium. D. To remodel and buy new equipment for the Industrial Arts Department. E. To remodel and buy new equipment for the cafeteria. F. To remodel and install new equipment for the department of business education. Then in January of 1968, a bond issue of S640,000.00 was approved and the money used for the building of a new library, art room, administrative offices, and three additional classrooms over the area used for parking west of the music department. The building is at two levels, leaving the ground level free for parking. The area previously used by the adminis- trative offices is now remodeled and is the senior high offices and the cotmseling offices. The rooms previ- ously used for the counseling offices along with the old teacher's lounge was remodeled and provides a modern teacher's lounge. The space previously used for the library was remodeled and is made into three new classrooms, one of which is now the resource center. In the fall of 1968 Mr. Bierbaum told the board of education of his intention to retire as superintendent within two years. The board accepted his resignatio effective June 30, 1970. Mr. Clinton E. Crites was elected superintendent t replace Mr. Bierbaum. 1VIr. Crites came to the distric in 1963, after having served as teacher and principal i the Hazelwood School District. He served as principal of Valley School for three years and then of Wes Richmond School for four years before his promotion to the superintendency. In 1975 Mr. Crites resigned to work for the state department of education in Jeffer- son City. He was replaced by our clu'rent superintend- ent Dr. Robert M. Hixson who had served as an assist- ant to Mr. Crites for several years and was employed by the Riverview Gardens School District before that. We can look back and see that our high school has grown from one room in 1907 to a large building of folu' stories in 1976. The first graduating class was composed of seven students, whereas the graduating class of 1976 numbers arotmd 165. The staff of 1911 had only eleven teachers. The enrollment that year was 74 students. This year we have over 900 pupils and over 50 instructors and administrators. We have a course offering of over 150 different subjects to choose from. We have a satisfactory ratio of students to teachers 120 to lj which enables the students to derive the most ben- efit from their classroom periods. Om' school is proud of our contributions to leadership and achievement in all walks of life. In sports several of our boys have made All-American as a result of their records on their high school football and basketball teams. Is there any- one who doesn't remember Paul and Mark Christman? The pictures on pages 4-16 were taken from old edi- tions of the Mapleleaves Yearbook. Pages 10 and 11 were taken directly from the 1957 Mapleleaves year- book which celebrated the school's 50th anniversary with pictures and articles concerning the proud achievements and long established traditions at M-RH. The histoijy of our school from pages 4-14 was taken from an old essay found in the filing cabinet of llflr. Charles C Brown after his retirement in 1972. Charlie Brown passed away in July of 1976. 'L iii The German-American Partnership Program Since 1974 MRH students of German have enjoyed participat- ing in an exchange program with the Erich-Hoepner Oberschule in West-Berlin, Germany. The purpose of GAPP is to give German and American teenagers an opportunity for an in-depth experience of a foreign culture by living with a foreign family, attending school in the foreign country, and joining with their partners in cultural and social activities. For the MRH participants, the four-week stay in Berlin is pre- ceded by a ten-day bus tour through historic, picturesque Southern Germany. A train then takes the group from West-Germany through communist East-Germany to West-Berlin. In Berlin, stu- dents follow a strenuous schedule of school attendance, cultural and political tours, and social activities with their families and partners. The MRH students return to the States in early Septem- ber, starting their long wait for their German partners, who come to MRH in the spring during their Easter break. The GAPP stu- dents. parents, and teacher work hard throughout the year to make the exchange program a success for both groups, the MRH stu- dents going abroad, and the German partner students and teachers visiting our school and our communities. ,....-'-f-' ' , - If -ii' -' . r ' . - N - 5 5 .
