After 32 years of teaching and counseling at M-RH, Mr. Warren Coy plans to retire to Cuba, Mo., where he and his wife have built a home. Mr. Coy has been a full-time counselor for 10 years. Before that he was a part-time counselor for 10 years. He got involved in counseling because he has always been interested in trying to help students solve their problems and in talking with them.” He began working on a degree in counseling in the early 1940's. Mr. Coy first started teaching in a rural school in 1933. All eight grades were in one class. After teaching at Riverview Gardens, he left for one year and went to work in the personnel department at Sunncn’s. He applied for a position at M-RH in 1943. He first look a job as a physical education teacher. Later, when a social studies vacancy occurred, he changed to that field. Besides counseling, Mr. Coy also has coached freshman basketball and helped coach track. In his years of teaching, Mr. Coy has had no regrets. He said. If I were to relive my life, I think I would follow a similar route.” He enjoys being with people and helping them. For Mr. Coy it has been a happy, busy and full life of helping people learn from books and from life. Mr. Fred Larason will also be ending his last of 32 years at M-RH. He has been teaching science since he came to M-RH. Mr. Larason originally wanted to be an engineer. However, the depression hit while he was attending Maryland College. He stayed there because it was less expensive than transferring to another university to work on an enginei ring degree. Before coming to M-RH. Mr. Larason was the superin- tendent of schools in Oregon, Mo. He decided that he preferred teaching to administration. He heard of an opening at M-RH from a friend and so came to M-RH to begin his first of 32 years. • • Mr. Larason has not only been a teacher. He coached two athletic teams. For 27 years he coached B team basketball and for five years he was the varsity baseball coach. Mr. Larason and his wife are going to move to Indian Hills Lake in Cuba, Mo., after his retire- ment. He plans to do a lot of fishing, golfing, gar- dening, traveling, and beating Mr. Coy in bridge. Mr. Larason said that he will miss the students, the staff and the athletics, all of which have been a part of his life for so many years. In June, Mrs. Swann completes 18 years at M- RH. She began her teaching career in North Caro- lina and completed seven years in two elementary schools. After moving to St. Louis, she taught first grade at Bruce school. She then became a substi- tute in this district for four years. She substituted in every grade and in every type of class, includ- ing shop. Later she became a full-time teacher of social studies classes and then English classes. Now she teaches English to freshmen. Mrs. Swann believes that high school is the stu- dent's opportunity to learn. Mrs. Swann feels that the biggest change in the students has been that a few more students are not as ambitious. She said, M-RH students are fine young people and 90% are good citizens.” Mrs. Swann feels M-RH is a fine school. She has never made a request for supplies that hasn’t been furnished. The school has always had a good fac- ulty and her association with all the teachers, from those who have retired to the new young teachers, has enriched her life. Mrs. Swann’s plans after retiring are to relax which includes sleeping late. She wants to become more active in the church, join ladies’ clubs, visit her ch iIdrcn in California, and garden. Mrs. Swann may also continue teaching a course for high school equivalency which she now does one night a week. Together, Mr. Warren Coy, Mr. Fred Larason, and Mrs. Loraine Swann have spent 82 years as educators at M-RH. They have been dedicated to giving their students the best possible education and guidance. M-RH will truly miss these three people who have given so much to others. We proudly dedicate the 1975 yearbook to these three educators who will long be remembered. 2 14 M-RH students visit Germany . . . Camp Wyman Counselors . . . First year of an unas- signed hour . . . This is the purpose of a yearbook, bringing memories back to its holder. The yearbook staff works together to compile the events of the school year in a type of history book, using pictures to illus- trate each event and writing us reminders of the event. C.O.E. students attend classes in the morning and then go to work in the afternoon. STAGE CREW A most important service group at M-RH is the Stage Crew. This industrious group prepares the auditorium for concerts, pro- grams, assemblies, and any com- munity activity. The Stage Crew is made up of volunteers who spend a lot of their time in setting up microphones, lights, and risers. Mr. Paul Cochran sponsors the group and keeps a trained group of students on hand for every activity. There were eight new members (flunkies) this year who were trained by Mr. Cochran and the older members. Row 1: G. Smith, S. Finley, B. King. Row 2: R. Sivcovich, D. Hudson, K. Willis, T. Hickey, S. Christ- mas was the time for caroling for the students. They saw a play at the Loretto Hilton, followed by horseback riding, a picnic in the Spring, and a French luncheon at Andre’s Swiss Chalet early in April. The Club had 30 members with Kathy Anderson as president, Debbie Kinchelar as vice-president, and Betty King as secretary-treasurer as pictured at left. 87 SPANISH CLUB Ron I: L. Williams, S. Members went to a Spanish restaurant and ate while being serenaded by Spanish music and songs. The club won first place in the ear-float contest in the Homecoming Parade for the third year in a row. About 15 members of the Spanish Club participated in the trip. Their means of going relied on many fund-raising projects in which other members of the club who couldn't partake in the trip this year donated their help to the cause. The trip involved vis- iting such places as Mexico City. Acapulco, Taxeo, and some parts of Texas. On the trip they enjoyed the different way of life, the bullfights, the cliff divers, shopping, and bargaining in the markets. The trip proved not only to be educational but also enjoyable. The hope is that the trip w ill be carried on every other year. 88 89 GERMAN CLUB Row 1: D. McCann, J. Pryor, R. OLaughlin, A. Kern, A. Springer, M. Bauer, C. Sago, I,. Holly. ,1. Fritz. P. I he 6 week trip to Germain proved to he a very exciting and educational experience for those students returning from Germany. I hey looked forward to the airival of German students to visit them for a w hile in the spring. As always, the German Club was a very active club. They held a challenging initiation parly for new members. Other activ ities included a hanijel w ith teacher-student prepared authentic meals, a Christmas party, Fasehingshall. a picnic and hike, and a banquet. The candy sale and talent show were the big fund raising projects which largely supported GAPP (German American Partnership Program). This program helped finance the student s trip to Germany . 90 MURA IS THE SCREAM MACHINE PEP CLUB OFFICERS: N. Grommet, Pres.; C. Hanley, Sec.; B. Cotner, Treas.; J. Condit, V. Pres. The Pep Cluh was a very important part of the revived school spirit at MRU. The Cluh really got things rolling with their spirit weeks, the crazy pep assembly, and the biggest event of sponsoring two Blue Devil Mascots for the entire year. The mascots and pep club members showed their loyalty by giving our Blue Devils a lot of their time and hard work. The Scream Machine stuck with the Blue Devils and cheered them to victory. 94 Swaying to the music of The Sting and waving their blue and white pom pons was only part of the work the 23 members of the 1974-75 pom-pon squad did this year. The girls per- formed during halftime at football and basketball games and also during halftime of the soccer game on Feb. 3 to help the Junior class raise money. For the third year in a row the girls were invited to perform in the Veiled Prophet Parade. They also decorated a ear for the Homecoming Parade.
