DEDICATION... Many students who come to M-RH are never touched by high school life, other than in the classroom. In the past few years this attitude of non-involve- ment has increased at an alarming rate. There are a few remaining students who contribute their utmost to the many facets of our high school. To this dwindling number of enthusiasts, the students who care, we dedicate the 1970 Maple Leaves. The sponsors are Miss Carolyn Dorsch and Miss Sandra Freeman. 75 •' Foreign Exchange Club and Rabea Filali Exchange Student The Foreign Exchange Club was reactivated in 1969 with the aim of providing a group of students who would be responsible for the so- cial and cultural activities of the American Field Service student and thereby help to relieve the host family of some responsibility for this part of the program. With an increase in membership and under the sponsorship of Mrs. Bruschke, Mrs. Pierce, and Mr. Detering, the club members have in- dividually escorted Rabea Filali to various events, held a Christmas Party in her honor, and sold chocolate bars to raise funds for future programs. Their record was five wins and six losses, with no ties. The game experience will hopefully prepare them in some way for the junior varsity and var- sity teams in years to come. 101 Larry Todd (above) was one of the juniors on the team, and hopefully will return next year. Charlie Aitch, (below) a junior, was instrumental in grabbing rebounds and making them good. Kerry Underwood, senior. Varsity Basketball 1969-1970 The basketball season, although sparked with a few well-earned victories, was, on the whole, a bleak one. The Leafs had a lot of potential but seemed to have trouble in coordinating their efforts. Sonny Brady, senior, received individual honor by being named to the All-Conference Squad at the Conference Tournament at Clay- ton. He also broke the school record for free- throws, making 35 consecutive shots. Next year's team shows a good deal of promise. Re- turning lettermen and men from Mr. Arft's B-team show the ability to win. With the sup- port of our coaching staff, the cheerleaders, and the student body, perhaps the winning tradition will return to MRH. Joe Rideout (21), another of Mr. Arft's '69 team proved himself to be a future asset in seasons to come. Mike McKinney played center, and will graduate this year. The theme of the dance was based on a novel by Aldous Huxley entitled A Brave New World. The couples were entertained by the Cashmires and the Soulful Strut, besides the entertain- ment provided by the G.A.A. cabinet's skit—a dance to the song The Age of Aquarius. Decorations were luminous green planets and the gym was draped in dark blue crepe paper. Freshman Jack Mr. Rick Lasley GAA Cabinet ROW 1: M. Pesek, S. Casey, C. Mowrer, D. Fuhrman, D. Moeller, D. The Frau wrapped up the entire event. Faschings Ball Friday the 13th Bad Luck draft what? Leader of the pack This costume won top honors. Faschings is a religious festival celebrated throughout Germany. The merrymaking begins about forty days before Lent, and Germans of all ages and backgrounds participate. The celebration is continued for six to eight weeks in the Rhineland and Bavaria, and only several days in areas like Berlin. The last two days are Rose Monday and Faschings Tuesday. The celebration includes the wearing of masks, carrying out the idea of being different once a year. The masking stems from the ancient idea that it would drive evil spirits away. The German Club celebrates Faschings with an annual ball. This year the theme was bad luck and was carried out by the club members in costume. Let's be friends.
