Practical A ris Prepare Students Realizing that many students will begin to earn their own way in the world upon leaving high school, M-RH offers an extensive range of com- mercial and practical courses. For those who are interested in developing sale- able skills in the manual fields and for those who are just interested in learning how to use dad's tools at home, M-RH offers courses such as shop, mechan- ical drawing, and handicrafts, The shop classes offer composite shop - an elementary course de- signed to provide a general foundation in shop work, wood shop-an advanced course in wood- working techniques. and metal shop-an advanced course in metalworking techniques. Mechanical drawing is offered in two forms. com- posite shop I and advanced mechanical drawing. Composite shop lays a foundation for the advanced course. The advanced class is designed to teach principles used in industry and to lay a foundation for college courses. A course in handicrafts is offered which teaches students practical skills which help students create articles which are useful to them. For those who wish to go into the business world directly after leaving high school, the commercial courses are offered-shorthand. typing. business law and salesmanship. The Gregg system of shorthand is taught to the students who desire shorthand. A variety of typing courses are offered to suit the varying needs of M-RH students. For students who desire to learn to type only for their personal use, personal typing is offered. The secretarial students usually continue with clerical typing. office practice and secretarial practice. The course in business law is designed to acquaint the student with a basic knowledge of the complicated laws which relate to the business world. The course in salesmanship teaches the methods and skills connected with sell- ing. The students are given a chance to gain practi- cal experience in salesmanship by practicing on each other in class.

Fine -4 rts Aid in Rounding Education In order to have a well rounded education. it is necessarv for a person to Come in contact with as many different fields as possible. ln recognition of this need. the students are re- quired to studv one unit of fine arts. Among the fine arts are art. vocal music. and or in- strumental music. Each gives the student an opportunity to express himself. and afford him an opportunity to realize undiscovered talents. First vear art is intended to provide hasic training in art. and further vears of art enahle the more serious student to receive rrritieisrn and develop fully ,his talents. There are in- strumental and vocal groups for a varying range of interests and skills. Among these classes are hand. orchestra. choir. ensemhle. and the glee clubs. Letis Keep Together Now fg ,ie Art Class Provides Creative Outlet 1 Coasting Orchestra Rehearsal Physical Education Develops Teamwork Although the physical education classes do provide the usual hodv-huilding exercises. their purpose is not only physical development. These classes have also heen organized to provide the students with a working knowl- edge of many of the sports which. in turn. helps to develop teamwork and good sports- manship. To help develop these qualities an active intramural program is provided. The girls play hockev. haskethall. vollevhall and soft- hall. The hovs plav foothall. haskethall. volley- hall. softhall and have wrestling meets and cross-countrv meets. Nia'vlewood-Richmond Heights is noted for its good sportsmanship in all these activities. ln realization of the fact that many of the girls at M-RH will take their place in the world as home- makers. the home economics department offers sev- eral courses to hetter prepare future homemalcers. Several courses in home living are offered which teach several of the requisites of home huilding. ln these courses the girls learn home eeononiv. groom- ing hahits. and sewing. They also study one of the most important modern day arts. cooking. Taught luv Miss Yackel. these girls leave high sehool pre- pared to provide for a family. COE Gives Experience The Co-Operative lfducation class provides on- the-joh training in a chosen oeeupation to those students intending to enter the lvusiness world upon graduation. Open only to seniors. the class meets everv dav under the supervision of Forrest Whit- worth. For three hours in the morning. they take r-ourses related to their oeeupations. Then. in the afternoon. the students go to work in one of the 27 different voeations represented in the class. Many of the husiness firms in the area adjacent to YI-Rll have offered to eo-operate with the school hv pro- viding positions for the students. Counselors Guide Siudenls During the entire high school course the counsel- ors are invaluahle to the students. :Xlwavs ready to lend a helping hand. these four teaehers guide the students not only in seholastie matters. hut quite often give assistanee and advice on personal matters. also. Thev help plan the four-year programs. speak- ing to each student personally. and incorporating in the program those suhiects which would most henefit the individual student. l.ater. they give guidance in the choice of future vocations. For those who plan to attend eollege. the counselors provide information on the ehoif-e of a school. and seholarships availahle.
