FROM English Program Offers Variety .-Xt M-HH the lfnglish department offers a variety of courses designed lu make the high school student pro- ficient in the meehanies of the language as well as giving the student a haekground in literature. Un the freshman and sophomore levels emphasis is placed on writing and grammar while English on the junior and senior levels heeomes a study whieh is designed to lead to appreciation of the great literature of the world in addition to further perfecting skills in using the written and spoken word. M-RH offers several speeialized courses in addition to the standard Fnglish eourses. Freshman students may avail themselves of the remedial reading program to improve their ahility to deal with the printed page. For college- hound seniors. Senior lfnglish lays a foundation which students will find helpful in the future years of study. Aside from the courses in Fnglish the student may hroaden ltls knowledge and increase his skill through the study of dramatics. speech. and journalism. Languages Enrich Students' Minds As part of M-Rllls curriculum. three languages are offered to the students. l.atin and Spanish. which have long heen a part of the curriculum. were joined last year hy a French course. All of the three classes are aimed at giving the student a supplement to their cultural back- ground in addition to giving them knowledge about the language. The first year is primarily eoneerned with laying a foundation in the grammar of the language. During the seeond year. the students are given an opportunity to put their skill to use hy reading works in the language which they are studying. The latin elass reads Julius Caesar. The French elass reads .'1f0lUIlI lhe World in 80 Days IN French and the Spanish elass reads Life magazines and various textbooks. French with the Southern Touch
