OUR GUIDING LIGHT ingmaaferzi A Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School has again maintained the fine standards of its worthy educational program. The capable leadership of Mr. Adams, our superintend- ent, Mr. Vossbrink, our assistant superin- tendent, Mr. Martin, our principal, Mr. Del Pizzo, our assistant principal, and the con- scientious members of the school board have made high achievements possible. Through their sympathetic counsel, their cooperation, and their enthusiam, the oppor- tunities for extra-curricular activities have A been extended and enriched. At the same time the high educational standards, an inherent tradition of M.R.H., have been maintained, and the best interests and de- sires of the student body kept uppermost in their thoughts always. These are the ones, whose tireless and faith- ful endeavors, whose scholarship and broad i range of interests have the high esteem and l respect of every M.R.H. student. May we congratulate them for a commendable job. X K MR. R. LEE MARTIN Principal MR. FERDINAND DEL PIZZO Assistant Principal MR. E. R. ADAMS Superintendent MR. The freshmen-the beginning' act - started training in September and made a good introduction. After two years under the big top the sophomores have be-- come well acquainted with the whirl of school life. In the center of the ring stand the juniors, ready to take their places as next year's stars. The undergrads have proved themselves capable and energetic in all their undertakings, active in every phase of school life, and always ready to lend a hand so that the show may go on. Our special thanks go also to Miss Sharp and Mr. Davis, our faculty sponsors. Publishing a yearbook is an exciting, il' exasperating task. The 19,17 Maple Leaves could not have been published without the capable and willing cooper- ation of many M.l'l.lI. students who sold subscriptions, solicited advertisements. wrote copy, typed well-nigh illegible write-ups, and did the thousand-and-one things necessary to the editing ol' a yearbook. Thanks to you all! we CZ ip 'Pol' the presses! lt's a scoop- those snooping Chip reporters are at it again! This year, the monthly M.Il.l'l. school paper completed its third con- secutive semester ol' publication under the sponsorship of Mr. Dubry with Ann Dul-Bois and Shirley Garner as editors- in-chief, Lois Hough as associate editor, John Emmons, photographer, and Don Beimdiek, business manager ol' two years. The confusion and anxiety ol' meeting those deadlines, the hasty debates on front page stories, and the trips to the printers will linger in the memory of the journalism classy but the greatest remembrance is that through their ef- forts each member ol' the staff became more a part of M.R.H. and its fine traditions. brcmnl Rumi Hlggll frmxt Run' Statler, Kunlpcr, BLlI'l1llI'Ll, Hcss, Miss Sharp, Fritsclm, Vvlmitvslxill, lvfyrick, McLeod, Owl-ns. ms, Schulz, Mcliulwlm Htlllgll. Practicing' with the Varsity under the expert tutelage ot' Coaches Moseley, McArtor, and Craig certainly helped the boys sharpen and improve their game, until most of them had places on the Junior Varsity. The soph- omore squad displayed a running attack that could hardly be stopped and an aerial game to match. The Red Cross Life Saving, both Junior and Senior, was under the direction of Commodore John Flint, Director of Life Saving and Water Safety in St. Louis and St. Louis County. After completion of their courses each girl received a certiticate to show that she had passed the test in her classification. All those that completed the course were eligible to participate in the swim- ming meet that was held on the last evening of the course, May 19. Events were held in all classifications, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. 1, Chorney. Mead:-, Hack Row: Kortc, Slcllhorn, Palmer, Hough, Thoiupson, Kruse, Lang, Gaiult, Fuqua. This year over two hundred girls came out for after-school intra-murals. Volleyball inti'a-murals give all volley- ball enthusiasts a chance to play, regardless of whether they make the class teams or not. The four freshman, sophomore, and junior teams, and the three senior teams played for the intra-mural cham- pionship. After class teams were cho- sen, intense practice for inter-scholastic championship was begun. The class teams of other schools found the Blue Devils hard to beat in the past years, because of the excellent leader- ship of Mrs. Boehm. This year's teams, With the added guidance of Miss Banks, were just as tough to beat, if not more so. Front Roni: Myrieli, B. Edmonds, Reed, Phiropoulos, R, Millei', Bailey, Meade. These breathless females, who this year felt very proud when they appeared donned in the boys' track warm-eups, were a common sight chop- ping up the football field this fall. lt was re-cheers this season for Mary Aim Anderson, who really mows 'em down as she charges down the field. A cheer should also be given for Joan Dolan, the little gal with the big shin guards, who warded off the enemies' drives at the Maplewood goal. The biggest game of the year was the Varsity defeat of Kirkwood, 6 to 1. The season was closed with a picnic after the Webster-Maplewood game, so the girls felt the year well completed. if A 1'l7'U1Il Row: Vv'ulfruc1er, Schutc, Clement, Miss Herman, Andrews, Hohlstein, Hutclneon. Eight were chosen on their abil- ity to lead cheers, their dependability in participating, and their willingness to give time for practice. At the beginning ot' the year, everyone saw little blue caps. The cheerleaders were wearing them to advertise their sale. Next, you saw white head scarfs, with Maplewood-Richmond Heights in blue, on all the girls. Then last, you saw little blue and white decals which the fellows had on their cars. Vivid colors of the rainbow, soft music, and dim lights all blend for the dreamy background of our annual Junior-Senior Prom. We are sure it will be such a gala affair, but because the Maple Leaves must go to press before this eventful date, we will just have to dream of the beauty of our gracious Queen, Miss Betty Toliver, and that of her attending court. Bud Aubuchon, Junior Class President, presented the Ribbon Bearers: Lucille Abernathy, Sue Best, Joann Cobb, Jerry Costello, Joan Dolan, Loraine Funk, Rose Grote, Jean Kemper, Helen Kuester, Doris Melton, Betty Pesell, and Virginia Tilden. The retiring Queen, Betty Carney, then received the six Junior Maids: Carol Moon, Muriel Mutrux, Mary Ann Fleming, Joan Young, Mary Ann Anderson, and Mary Buchroeder, and the two Sen- ior Maids: Dottie Schute and Harriet Moore. Absolute quiet greeted the two flower girls who preceded the new Queen of the 1947 Junior-Senior Prom. With thoughts of the joyous evening of April 12, 1947, we must leave and move on to the next big event in our passing parade. C? The mascu- line half of M.R.H. felt rather strange at this, the fifth annual Backward Dance sponsored by the G.A.A. Those especially affected were the Jacks: Dale Babbitt, fresh- man, Jim Sullivan, sophomore, Bud Aubuchon, junior, and Don Harris, senior, and the King, Charles Coleman.
