Bringing with him new ideas and plans, he has improved the effectiveness of working hours spent within the confines of the class room, and enthusiastically given support to our extra-curricular activities. lt is not only Mr. Martin's capable leadership and eflicient manage- ment which give him a place in the heart of M. R. H. - it is also his keen understanding of us, the youth of today. MR. E. R. ADAMS Superintendent MR. GEORGE VOSSBRINK Assistant Superintendent THE Plllll Ill lllll Now that the war years are over, a new era of prog- ress is born to us. Mr. Martin, our principal, and Mr. Del Pizzo, our assistant principal, have, with their enthusiasm, counsel, and sympathetic under- standing, helped us to revive the long awaited Chipg planned with us and other sponsors the vocational guidance program, and encouraged us in maximum participation in all of the activities. Thus, they have ,i MR. FERDINAND DEL PIZZO MR. R. LEE MARTIN Assistant Principal Principal succeeded in broadening and enriching the opportu- nities which are available here at M. R. H. When Superintendent E. R. Adams and the School Board wanted a man for Assistant Superintendent in charge of Business Administration, they found Mr. Vossbrink the person best qualified by experi- ence and training for the position. Though we have lost him as a principal, we know that serving in this capacity, he still has our best interests at heart. llllllll lllllllllll IS PRUHRESSIVE Our School Board and Administrators have arranged a long' term huilding pro- gram, designed to meet adequately the educational, recreational, and cultural needs ol' the community with sound financial planning' to handle such a pro- gram. ln addition, they have perpetu- ated and improved the line educational prograni which has always heen a tradition here. This prog'ram includes health, physical education, and recrea- tion, as well as the language arts, sciences, mathematics, social studies, music, art, and the practical arts. Such a program is set up to meet individual needs, and to give to each boy and girl that all 'round development so necessary for participation in a modern demo- cratic society. 1-. f X SCIIUUI, HOAIIID U. But really it's not quite as bad as that, 'Cause the radio's on, at my right. English, Science, History, and Math, I've struggled through them all, And 'on 'report card day, the grades Sometimes my parents appall! But, seriously, I must confess, I couldn't do without The excitement that comes with each new day A thrill, without a doubt. X ' I I levi? Again this year, the committee has done a splendid job in man- aging the necessary business, and welcome social affairs of the Senior Class. It may have been work, but with cooperation, dili- gence, and sound judgment, the class rings were selected and approved by the entire Senior body. The Senior Dance, and plans for that day of all days, graduation, were also the work of this representative committee. The Big Shots, oiiicers of the JIIIIQ 1946 class and the January 1946 class, we1'e automatically members of the com- mittee. Chosen to it by the seniors were: Mary Ellen Brockman, Kay Henley, liar- lene Johnson, Jane Kelly, Pat Lay, Betty Carney, Richard Henley, Bob Siefert, Ray Callaher, and Herb Klinger. The primary purpose of this plan was to in- terest students in the occupations, and to make available information on a wide range of vocational opportunities. A representative committee of students with the aid of faculty advisors, Miss Murch and Miss Smith, and a Y. M. t'. A. Counselor, Mr. Gilmore, formu- lated plans to execute the program. During' the Iirst semester three general assemblies were held for the three upper classes to which well-informed speakers from the business and profes- sional world brought their experiences, and invaluable information. After the three assemblies were completed, a list ot' specilic occupations was presented to students from which they were to choose those in which they were most interested. Then, ou the basis of their selections, thirty-six interest groups were set up in which the students had regular discussions with specialists in these fields. This program was received with such enthusiasm by those participating that wiser choices of life work should result. The Chip HE Maplewood-Richmond Heights school newspaper, the Chip, back after many years' absence, is again a center of interest. The credit for its revival goes to our new principal, Mr. Martin, and a few pioneering students who organized a planning committee. The work went ahead under the direc- tion of Mr. Dubry, the sponsor. The First edition was published 011 December 19, having' been produced by a group ot' interested students who volunteered their time to make this first edition a success. The second edition was the work of a newly formed journalism class, but ev- eryone in the student body was encour- aged to contribute articles. If next year's class has as much enthusiasm as this one, the Chip will continue to roll from the presses, recording our life and times here at M. R. H. Realizing this, the members of the Rostrum Club have attempted to develop their ability in public speaking by participation in dec- lamation contests, debates and local club meetings. The Varsity Debate Squad attended the State Debate Conference at the Univer- sity of Missouri on December 7 and 8 where they met other teams from all over the state. February 9 found the same squad in the Sub-Regional Debate Meet here. M. R. H. won over eight schools. Early spring brought the long awaited National Forensic League State Speech Tournament. Despite strong state-wide competition, M. R. H. made its usual good record. Thanks to Mr. Welden's effective coach- ing, the club experienced a most pront- able and successful year. Oh, no, the Greggites do not canter around-just their pencils do, up and down the little steno books. The amazing thing is that these Greggs can toss it back to you, and it makes good sense. They really shine on the last Friday of the month when the class becomes a club. This is the occasion of guest speakers, the annual visit to an uptown business ofiice, or maybe a movie, a par- ty or a hike. This year, Ruth Shank from St. Louis County Gas gave a talk on good grooming and etiquette for business people. Movies enjoyed were: Simplifying Work in the Office, and The Voice of Mr. X. Haven't you already guessed the name and na- ture of this club? 1t's the Grub Street- ers, of course. This group offers to its members every two weeks a marvelous chance to mix an evening of enjoyment with some mental effort trying to com- pose and write poetry. Delving into the works of Poe and Keats may be brain work, but just try to write a poem that rhymes! Some of the members have written commendable poetry which was entered into The National High School Anthol- ogy Competition. Four students were placed in the contest. This group is known as the M Club, and is made up of all the var- sity lettermen of football, basketball, wrestling, and track. Sponsored by J. T. McArtor, the football coach, the club is organized to keep all letter bear- ers of M. R. H. in touch with events in the sport world. At meetings of the M Club, the mem- bers discuss various sports within and out of school. Some of these topics were the football games at Walsh Stadium to which the lettermen were invited by Dukes Duford of the University, and also basketball games at Washington Field House to which they were invited. Especially enjoyed were the banquets given to various groups of lettermen throughout the year. Rifle Club EADY on the line-Load-Commence firing! The Rifle Club is at it again! I-letter not get in the way of these ex- pert marksmen. At the beginning of the season, the club fired on the rifle range at Valley School every evening. The team fired on Mon- day and Friday nights, and the squad fired on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Later, however, be- cause of the fire hazard at Valley School it was necessary to find a new range. This has curtailed the activities of the members somewhat, but in the spring they hope to participate in some matches with other clubs, particularly the City-County Rifle League. Hanks of some of the members are: Distinguished Rifleman, Don Williams: Experts, Bill Wilkinson, Wesley Hen- shaw, Ronald Nelms, Gilbert Adkins, Alan Deardorff, and Ray Keller. DEAD AIM! Il. could boast with pride this year. Much jubilation was due to the fact that all four class teams-freshman, sopho- more, junior, and senior - won their tirst game at the exciting play day held at University City. This triumph must have served as an incentive for the teams, since the season was packed with victories. Everyone agrees that this year's teams have done the best playing that has been seen in years. 1We wouldn't want to appear conceited IJ As for the varsity team, they never had to worry about losing a game with those lucky shot girls, Nadine Brennecke and Betty Ernst, making so many baskets, and Viola English and Jane Lloyd guarding the opponents. The old Gym was hardly recognizable with its gay trimmings. The traditional blue and white used for the streamers which fashioned a ceiling and draped sides of the dance enclosure were also carried out in the elaborate throne designed by Bill Couch. Considerable skill went into the making of this throne shaped like a large half football surrounded by white clouds, and decorated on either side with bewitch- ing blue devils. At a given signal, Brad Stevens stepped to the microphone and announced the pro- cession. First to be summoned were Rich- ard Henley, retiring captain of the Foot- ball Team, and Richard Haferkamp, cap- tain elect for next year. They took their positions at either side of the throne to the stirring music of On Blue Devils. Then the music changed to the lovely Sophisti- cated Lady, and Brad announced the re- tiring queen, Miss Carol Ellison, who took her place on the throne to receive the court. Special maids who joined the spot- light parade were: Freshman Maid, Miss Mary Ann Flemingg Sophomore Maid, Miss Betty Toliverg Junior Maid, Miss De- lores McNabb, and Senior Maid, Miss Doris Schaeffer. Little Jimmy Martin, the crownbearer, and the two flower girls, Carol Ann and Mary Ruth McClanahan, preceded the new queen who was heralded with special fanfare. Her majesty, Miss Jane Kelly, then approached the throne and received from the retiring queen, the crown, symbol of her enviable position. So ended the colorful pageantry which was an exciting prelude to a gay, unforgettable evening! Dcl McNabb. Rich Haferkamp, Mary Ruth McClanahan, Mary Ann Fleming, jimmy Martin. jam' Kelly. But, since the Maple Leaves 'goes to press before April 27, 1946, we'll have to dream a little, pretending that we know Al Judd's Or- chestra rose to a magnificent fanfare as the Coronation ceremony began. Bud Babbitt, Junior Class President, an- nounced the twelve ribbon-bearers, the Misses Gerry Bader, Marilyn Burger, Margie Garrett, Betty Gibbs, Shirley Gray, Betty Lee Hess, Jeanne Hencken, Gloria Lang, Ruth Miller, Billie Steward, Dorothy Twombly, and susan Whitehill, who preceded the retiring queen, Miss Joan Steward. She then received the six Junior Maids, the Misses Dorothy Chor- ney, Audrey Crosby, Jane Kiely, Harriet Moore, Dotty Schute, and Betty Toliver. These in turn made way for the two spe- cial maids, Miss Jane Kelly and Miss Claire Kiely, A hush fell over the dance floor as the little crownbearer and the two tiny flower girls preceded the attractive, gracious Betty Carney as she ascended the throne to reign as Queen of the 1946 Jun- ior-Senior Prom. . . . Long after this copy of the Maple Leaves has been examined, autographed, and tucked away on a shelf, you'll agree that we can't go wrong in saying that the night of April 27 was a sparkling memory. Springtime . . . Apple blos- soms . . . soft music . . . Sounds like some- thing from a dream, doesn't it? At any rate, this will be what we will remem- ber about May 18, when the old Gym, dis- guised under an array of apple blossoms, will be the setting of our Senior Dance. Since the Maple Leaves goes to press be- fore the event actually takes place, we'1l just fashion a preview of thoughts, such as: Dick Andrews, Senior Class President, announcing Miss Carol Ellison, retiring queen, who summons to her court the spe- cial attendants, the Misses Joyce Laurit- son, Earlene Johnson, Sue Hamlin, and Betty Carney. Following them, the two Maids of Honor, Miss Claire Kiely and Miss Jane Kelly. Just as the fanfare from the orchestra climbs to the heights, Miss Virginia Austin, a tiny bit of sweet love- liness, ascends the throne and is made queen of the Senior dance. Then, before the Stardust can vanish before our eyes, escorts come to claim the lovely ladies of the court, and the evening's dancing be- gins. Such music Al J udd's Orchestra pro- duced! For, what could be a better theme for this G. A. A. sponsored man-grab than huge playing cards, and red and black streamers deco- rating the M. R. H. Gym? As in the past, 8 1230 will End the Backward Dance couples filling up the dance floor, the fellows wearing corsages bought or made by the girls. Now, wait a minute, when we say corsages, we don't mean the usual flowers and stuff. Oh, no! These corsages are made up of lifesavcrs, chew- ing gum, cigarettes, gum drops, vegeta- bles, and all such tempting ingredients which will probably dwindle as the danc- ing progresses. The highlight of the evening comes when Jane Lloyd, G. A. A. president, begins the coronation ceremony. From the orchestra, a high note blares as the Freshman Jack, Rich Adams, appears, followed by Sopho- more Jack, Bud Aubuchon, Junior Jack, Bob Wolff, and Senior Jack, Dick An- drews. Another blast of the fanfare, and before us stands a confused, but grinning Bill Couch, who is crowned King! Laughter subsides, and couples resume their dancing to the music of Emit Schus- ter's Orchestra. Time went so fast you knew it couldn't last, but wasn't it fun!
