Here within the confines of M.R.H. grows a vast field of young sprouts. We talk with others, we share their gripe, their gaiety, their gloom. In classrooms we read together Caesar and Chaucerg together we wait with tickling tongues for the final bell. Always there is a feeling of belonging, securely and happily, to a society of youthful association. With that our nutriment, we grow and ripen together in the fertile soil of school life. rang .xgddociafion P ULN Q MI DLI Pl U. Sponsored by Mrs. Boehm, G.A.A. is a club interested not only in sports, but in good fun as well. Hockey, basketball, volleyball, swimming, tennis, badminton, archery, and pingfpong are especially ac' cented. The Freshman Party and Fall Hike at Shaw's Park brought the club to life. Then came the popular Puff Pant Prom where gals brought gals and came in costume. Another Freshman Party and an initiation around the fire in the Library came hand in hand. Next on the calendar were the Backward Dance and the Spring Hike. Finally, the year came to a close with the Banquet. Here, accompanied by food and tears, letters were awarded and goodfbyes bestowed. CM HESE are the fellows who hang on to those letter sweaters the gals sigh over. Cnly Varsity lettermen and Seni-or Track men rate this honor 4 the true brawny males of M.R.H. The idea behind the Club is to get the boys together to discuss sports and comment on the moving pictures of differ' ent games. Another big feature is the givf ing of two' or threefyear passes to letter' men who have completed their Senior year in athletics. Gf course, you know that it's these boys who are the sponsors of the gala Football Dance. This year there was a conjunction Football Dance and the Senior What a night! of the Dance. The Club is also doing its part in keeping up the morale of the armed serv' ices. The well balf anced programs that it has given this year attest to this statement. Even the proverf bial Wciciden Indian can't resist them when the Mzirching Band in its handsome attire swings into a rousing rhythm, and the long hairs have been seen nodding approval when the Concert Band finishes one of its Symphonic Tone Poems. Then, too, everyf one enjoys it when they give out with a little Boogie Wcicigie. The Christmas and Spring Concerts were well attended and received high praise. Mr. Best and the serenaders of the iirst hour study hall were in fine shape for the Mtisic Festival at University City. The excellent criticism they received was well deserved. Poulos, Riggle, At the University City Music Festival in April it really came into its own, and that fact was confirmed by the rating of the judges. It should be noted here that sevf eral of its members played solos at this Fesf tival. The well executed Christmas and Spring Concerts in which the Crchestra participated were musical treats enjoyed by many. Several members belong to other Cr' chestras such as the Philharmonic, the VVomen's Symphony, and the AllfCounty Orchestra. The sureness of the strings, the delicacy of the wood Winds, plus the ringing quality of the brasses, minus the usual oil beat of the percussions brought success throughout the year to this fine musical organization. Perhaps only the glow of the sun upon Her hair, or the whiteness of His smile. In the next pages we have recorded a few of the moments we believe you will retain: dances of crepe paper and swishing formals and lovely queens, afterfschool sessions around a juke box, drinking cokes and munching pretzels - after all, what remains longest in the heart? Grad. It was the night of the Senior Football Dance. For conservative and patriotic reasons, the two dances were combined, making the affair doubly delightful. With its blue background covered with sparkling silver stars, the impressive snow' covered throne was a fitting setting for King Winter. Twisted blue and white streamers which made a canopy over the gym added much to the beauty of the setting. The GofGaptains of the Football Team, LeRoy Vogts and Gordon McAdow, be' gan the ceremony by taking their places at either end of the throne to the music of On Blue Devils. The royal procession, heralded by jo Ann Connard and Ann Coombs, then was announced by the Sen' ior Class President, Harold Watzig. To the heavenly strains of 'LSweet and Lovely, played by Bob Kelly's Band, the retiring Annual Queen, Miss Audrey Press, took her place on the throne. She was followed by Miss Mary Hawley, ref tiring Football Queen. The special maids then appeared, and one by one made their bow to the retiring queens. They were: Miss Judy Leighton, Freshman Maid: Miss Margie Garrett, Sophomore Maidg Miss jane Kelly, junior Maid: and the Misses Margie Rose and Ioan Steward, Senior Maids. Carol Ann and Mary Ruth Mcf Clanahan, crownfbearer and flower girl, preceded the queen. With the stage thus set, the 1944 Senior f Football Dance Queen, Miss Carol Ellison, was an' nounced. She approached the throne, was crowned by the retiring queens, and now reigns supreme until another year rolls around. The remainder of the evening was given over to dancing. Thus ended another night to record in our album of memories! -di 4, 44---Min-wa-1,4-A ure. .Q--re'f:Wfi:3wvf, V, -tree .HM r'h' N ill W5 joan .gilewarcf Junior-Senior Prom Queen 4 , omior- enior rom Y, that was a perfect night - the girls beautiful in their yards and yards of net and satin: the fellows handsomer than ever: the music simply divine! At least we know it will be, although once again, because of production demands, we are forced to report in March an event which will not take place 'til May. Anything we say, however, will not be an exaggeration if we can judge by the Proms of previous years. The grand procession precedes the dance. This year, with fanfare and for' mality, Her Majesty's Court will convene again. The crowd is hushed and the Presif dent of the junior Class, Ray Callaher, starts the promenade by announcing the fourteen junior RibbonfBearers: the Misses joan Ahtipus, Dorothy Beasley, Pat Buff kett, Betty Carney, Mary Ann Cavaf naugh, Janis Ceselschap, Peggy jenkins, Joyce Lauritson, Mickie LaVoie, Pat Lay, jane Lloyd, Margo Murray, Nancy Town' send, and Delores Williams. Next comes the retiring Queen, Miss Margie Verser, who takes her place on the throne to preside over the ceremony. She is followed by two special Senior Maids, Miss Mary Brady and Miss Margie R-ose. The six junior Maids: the Misses Virginia Austin, Sue Hamlin, jane Kelly, Claire Kiely, Adrienne Rettaire, and Mary Wilkinson, then make their entrance. Now the long' awaited moment has arrived, the pres' entation of the Queen. Preceded by the CrownfBearer and Flower Girls, the new Queen, dark and lovely ,loan Steward, apf proaches her throne and is crowned by the retiring Queen. Thus ends the colorful pageantry. Es' corts swarm around, claiming their part' ners for the first dance, and the evening is off to a grand start. Come May, we'll be seeing you there to verify all this. sub-s Ooabfcancding OR years and years we've had a Senior Dance at M.R.H. Reigning at this big spring formal was the Annual Queen se' lected by the subscribers to the Maple Leaves. Last year, the dance was a casuf alty of the times, and this year it was com' bined with the Football Dance. So-we lost a queen, but gained an idea. Why not select an allfschool favorite senior girl to have top honors in our book? Cn the oppof site page We present to you the winnah, Miss Marjorie Rose. Margie is un' doubtedly one of the Senior Class prize possessions. As you can see by her many activities, she is an allfaround girl with enior Q10 plenty of pep, and best of all she has time for a smile and a chat with teachers, class' mates, and undergrads alike. Martha Moon ran second in this contest and Dorothy Scheidt third. We can tell you that it is a man's world, just for a night! The gals pay, drag, and furnish corsages, made of a curious lot of candy, vegetables, gum, and cigarettes, if they are available, for the fellows of their choosing.
