Ruby Hitt Second place in accuracy-- Greene County Scholastic Typing Contest HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1953 We, the graduates of '53, entered the doors of M.'l'.H.S . on September 2, 1949, as separ- ate and distinct individuals. Itwashere that we encountered many difficulties in making friends and leaming the daily roudne which was to be ours for the following four years. We entered a bit fearful and often thought the way very rough and steep, but beyond that cloud of gloom and fear we saw the silver lining of four bright and joyous years ahead. As Freshmen we summed up to a grand total of 108 students. We soon became known as , The Green Freshies of '49. It was this year that M.T.H.S. met with the tragic and unfor- tunate hand of Death, our beloved principal, Mr. Oscar Smith, died. We soon learned to re- spect Sophomores, Juniors, and especially the Seniors as being much more intellectual and learned than we. I believe, too, that we even dreamed of the day when we would be looked upon by the tmder-grads. We, too, could foresee into the future the responsibility and pains -taking -steps we would have to follow to uphold the high standards set forth by those who had graduated before us. We all took much the same courses, but that is not saying we all leamed the same things--some studied some didn't--just as it is today, we were no exception. And now we go to the next episode of our stay at M.T.H.S., our Sophomore year. As Sophomores we began loosing our number. This year we were divided into two sections which we liked very well. OurSophomore year was truly a new experience that even our Fresh- man year hadn't been, because we permitted to choose our courses and take the subjects we were interested in. We will never forget some of those thrilling Sophomore experiences. The main event of our Sophomore year was our tour of Pittsburgh. This year, as had been our Freshman year, found us eager and willing to start the adventure of our Junior year . Ourlunior year was a new experience although we had very nearly the same studies and the same faculty members, excepting a few. During the Junior year we were pesented with many fine performances in the auditorium. As a high-lite of our Junior year, the Junior Play, 'We Shook the Family Tree , ranked highest. Now, our last and happiest stop was the Senior year. Our Senior year has been the most joyous year of our stay at M.T.H.S. As seniors we have tried to uphold all the old standards set before us and have tried to set up new ones to the best of our ability. Of course, the highest point of interest to us, as Seniors, is our graduation ceremonies. Although it seemed at moments that the way was almost unbearable we held true to our determination and goal--graduation. THE MUMMY AND THE MUMPS Presented by THE JUNIOR CLASS of MAPLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL Friday, February 27, 1953 'The Mummy and the Mumps' is a comedy in which an mglish titled professor complicates living at a New England School for Girls even before he leaves the docks of New York. The fact that one lie leads to another is well illustrated by the series of pretenses that result from one attempt to fool the public. Before the end of the play only two of the five men retain their true identity. CHARACTERS Sir Hector Fish . . . . . . . . . . William Henck Francis Briscoe . . . . I0sePh 1-0118 William Laidlaw .... Several years ago, a mining course was instituted in our school as a full time program. Due to the fact that the program has been dropped from the regular curriculum, we have added a weekly class of coal mining. The class is active and an interesting program is conducted. Much good is derived from such a program. Since only 1f200 of the acreage of coal has been mined, the boys realize the importance of mining. The high school is happy to acknowledge such a program. The sponsor, Mr . Lessner, is a certified mine instructor by the Department of Education. ,s , - .......,, ft ' M 1 K 1 f N A a ls ls., 1 l J 5 I7 C NATURE CLUB SEATED--Frances Johnson, Thomas Henry, Laura Joyce Davis, Ronald Crockett, Donald Allen, Edith Benn tt, Curtis Kiger, Kenneth Fox, Norma Babb, Elaine Ganocy, Marilee Phillips, Mervin Barb, Charfes Riffle, Helen Kuhla, John Koren, Barbara Furman, Lavonne Cuuight. The Maples had a rough season winning six and losing Hfteen. They lost the first ten games, before winning the 11th game at the expense of Jefferson. The team proved to the fans that they could play ball by winning six of the last eleven games on the schedule and winning the last four in a row. Most of the scoring was done by four boys: Hood, Ross, Verska and Kendrella. We can't leave Roebuck out because his ability as a playmaker and rebound man was outstanding. Hood made the All-Section XVIII team and also All Greene County Offensive team. Kendralla, Ross and Verska were members of the A11 Greene County Defensive team.
