G.A.A. began its second year in M.H.S. with Darlene Iames as president. The other officers are Mary Daly, Point Recorder: Ramona Brummer, V. Presi- dent: Alice Brummer, Treasurer: and Iana Miller, Secretary, All members must earn l00 points to remain eligible. This is easily done by taking part in the recreation activities. Extra points may be earned outside school. A letter is given to any member who earns 500 points. A girl earning 1000 points is eligible for the state G.A.A. Pin. This is the highest award that can be obtained. Honor teams are organized in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Members are chosen on the basis of sportsmanship, participation, leadership, and skill. Several girls were chosen to play the Danbury girl's basketball team. Soccer was played in the fall, although not as much time was spent on this sport as on others. Individual tournaments are held in aerial tennis and badminton. Much of the progress made by the girls is due to Miss Kirk, our sponsor and advisor, who is aided by the council. These people arrange the meetings and plan extra events such as tournaments. The score: Moville, 75 Mapleton, 13. Friday, October 19, proved to be a sad day for MHS. The Ramblers were defeated 13-U by Mo. Valley on their home field. This ended the Ramblers' winning streak. Getting back in the groove the football squad rolled over Correctionville 34-O. A very muddy football field left the Ramblers a sorry looking lot by the end of the game. A game which found Mapleton in a slump but also brought them their third conference victory was the Woodbine game. The score: 14-6. The Armistice Day game with Onawa, resulted in a loss to the Ramblers. The score 40-19. ' to 519 o- C' Qt? . The Rambler squad also walked away with the Western lowa Conference Championship title. The season was started oft with an easy defeat over Battle Creek which started the Ramblers rolling at full speed until a hard fought scrimmage with Manning, at which they suffered their first defeat. At this time Mapleton was ranked 9th in the state, but a slump which lasted throughout the county tourna- Q, 5 Martin Leonard Christensen Rohde Guard Forward Compliments of Barry-Collins Motor Co. The second and third defeats of the season were encountered when the Moorhead squad edged over Mapleton. Pulling out of their slump the Ramblers chalked up 3 more victories before the season ended, the last one with Dunlap to decide the conference title. Going on from the Sectional tournament, the Ramblers encountered some tough competition but succeeded in reaching Sub-State. Here they set a record in Mapleton basketball history by winning their first game in the Sub-State. In their second bid for State the Ramblers were defeated by Cherokee. This ended a successful season for both the boys and coaches. Word has just been received that Coach Tozz Robinson has been selected as coach-of-the- year by the Sioux City Iournal Sports Department. Coach-of- the-year Robinson has earned the title by an enviable record in football and especially bas- ketball, in the two years he has been in Mapleton. The 1951 football record was 4 and 4, and the '52 record shows 7 wins and 2 losses. The basketball tally sheet for '50-'51 shows a 23-3 record while in the '51-'52 sea- 'lie Coach Robinson. .-22... son 23 games were won and 4 were lost. As the Sioux City Iournal put it, Robinson coached pint sized Ramblers, disre- garded a lack of height disad- vantage, and turned them into giant killers in humbling such teams as Abraham Lincoln. Missouri Valley, LeMars, Sioux Center, and Storm Lake, before bowing out to Cherokee in the finals of the Sub-State. Sincere congratulations, Coach, from the Rambler Staff!! U S5156 ffqfi 4 5 mf?
