VIV1-1 ---- S1- Huston of Nlapleton Puhllt St hools HL lndependent bchool Dxstrrct of Mapleton w as orgamfed May 5 1880 rl he flrst important busmess transacted was the settlement wlth the fownshxp lllstrlct of Mapleton by whlch the Independent bchool IJISIFICI of Fast Mapleton recelxed nts share of property on hand 51520 41 together wrth the school house ln old Mapleton Before the erection of the new buxldmg school was held ln the Rlce bulldlng on the corner of l'1fth and Mam Streets whtle a few of the eighty one puprls went to the Helsler school At thls mme une 1880 two teachers were employed at salan s of 'B33 33 and S26 66 respectrx elv An electron held une 15 1880 for the purpose of xotrng bonds to the amount of S2200 assured the people of a new school house the contract for whlch was let August 24 1880 to L 8 btowell for S3100 'I hr contract prouded for the construc non of a two story bunldlng and the completlon of only the upper part On August 31 1880 the present slte was bought for S200 The contract for flnrshlng the bu1l:l1n,q was let June 3 1882 ln 1881 the terms 0' tultlon were S5 00 for lclxgh School pupils and S3 00 for puprls of the other elght grades Both charges were for a term of three months A thlrd teacher was added durlng the school year of 1881 1882 ln 1884 the prlce of tultlon was changed to S4 50 for three months ln both departments A proposmon for erectmg a burldlng ln the western part of the dlstrlct was de feated May 2 1887 About this tlme the board of education, frndmg If necessary to reduce expenses declded not to fence the grounds May 28 1889 bonds to the amount of S1500 for an addltlon to the school house were voted and on une 30 the contract was let to l' Ferguson The amount mentioned rn the contract 31413, was for completing all except the lower floor On the elghth of june 1889 the first graduatron exercxses took place Mrss Grace Chamberlain berng the only graduate At this time there were 303 puprls en rolled and five teachers employed On February 19 1902 the record shows that the name of of the dlstrrct was changed from East Mapleton to the Dlstnct of Mapleton Being authorized March 10 1902 to rssue bonds to the amount of S8500 the board on April 14 bought the ground for S500 and let the contract for the new school house March 30 1902 The contract for the Hrst heating plant was let to C A Thurston for S1397 October 15 1902 The bulldmg was accepted March 12 1903 and on the twenty thlrd school was begun ln the new house Durtngthe month of une 1909 a new furnace and ventrlatlng sy stem were C63 n V , , s x Q 1 A ' , A., - . . .
