The cheapest transportation rates were by water so they launched their vessel in the sea of time to travel for four years. During these years of travel the number of passengers varied until only seven remained the last year. Although they were busy always guiding ,their ship onward, the members found .imc to cooperate with others in student body functions. Some of them took part in the operettas and glee club. Some found time to participate in sports, news- paper, and annual. Still they did not forget their studies as the class was represented on the honor roll all four years. The class Class Let us take an imaginary airplane jour- ney into the year 1960. First of all, let us take a trip to the top of the Empire State Building in New York City. As we fly by a high window, we see a familiar face and even above the roar of the motor we hear a familiar voice. Why I do believe it is Lynn Ellingson, famous lawyer for the richest man in all the world. As we circle around again, we see entering the office of Lawyer Lynn Ellingson, a bent and feeble old man. Could it possibly be - - Yes - - it is Mr. Strong, adviser of the Senior Class of 1940, On either side he is supported by two young men in chauffeurs uniforms. You have guessed it, Mr. Strong, suddenly inheriting millions of dollars, became the richest man in all the world. Now, we had better hurry on for we have a long way yet to go. Let us stop on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. On the lawn in front of a very lovely little cottuge we see a young woman and two adorable little children, a boy and a girl. As it is islorq also boasts of the fact that it was the first to pay its student body dues for several years. They prepared a banquet at Seaver's lodge for the class af '39 and also decorated for baccalaureate and commencement. The members were active in student body of-A fices and sought to cooperate with the stu- dents and faculty to make their school days happy days. During their senior year they left Friday for a three day vacation trip to Bonneville Dam on their Senior Sneak. Now they have reached one milestone on their journey and have knowledge to con- tinue as they desire in the future. May they never forget their voyage through Mapleton High and their ever Willing adviser, Mr. Strong. POID QCLI about 5:30, we see a young man drive up the driveway, and as he gets out of his car, the two children run and jump into his arms As we peek into the dining room window, the woman is facing us. Imagine our sur- prise when we observe Donna Beck, now Mrs. Larry Lord. Now let us take a longer trip across the ocean to Germany. As we fly through the air, we head for the Capital Berlin. We will have to be careful here. As we walk through the front of the beautiful house, we are met by a very gracious lady. It is Hitler's private tutor. Sure enough, it is Mae Vincent! You see during the war of 1940, Hitler had lost his mind and gone back to his second childhood and Mae was teaching him not tc be such a tyrant. But my greatest surprise came when I saw Iunior Seaver in Corvallis. He was Working on a plan in which sponge rubber will re- place the old turf of the gridiron. Iunior says it will be a great advantage to the ball carrier, as he will be able to Class hophecq--Continued bounce over for a touch-down. Seaver, who is coaching OSC's eleven, seems to be doing some great work this year. Let us turn our attention now toward the highest peak of the rcckies. Alex Lewis re- sides here with his beautiful young wife. Could it be he is afraid some one will steal her Is that the resaon he lives so far away from everyone? No! I-le is a lookout attender Before we leave, let us watch the mountian climbing party coming up the steep hill. Well for goodness sake! It's none other than Bill Bill Brown, the most famous doctor of athlete's foot in all the west. This is his honeymoon trip. We all know who his wife is, They live in California on a walnut ranch. ICISS We, the senior class of 1940, being un-- sound of mind and infirm of body as a re- sult of our four strenuous years forced upon us during our attendance at Mapleton High School District No. 32, hereby declare this to be our last will and testament: To the faculty we leave our appreciation for the effort they put forth to guide us through our high school days. To the junior class we leave our senior dignity and superiority. To the sophomore class we leave our ability to debate in class. To the freshmen we leave our dramatic ability and our many happy memories of Mapleton Hi! As individuals: I, Lynn Ellingson, do will my ability to So far we find all of our graduating class doing well for themselves. Now let us fly toward Mapleton and see if Mapleton High School is still standing. Yes, sure enough. There it is. Well, who is this gossiping over the back fence? Could it be? Yes, - - believe it is. Marianne Stutz, now Mrs. Irvin Goude. She and Irvin live a very happy life in Mapleton. Marianne couldn't stand to stray so far away from her old home town. Now, as we have all the students ot the Senior class of 1940 and know they are all alive and doing well, let us turn homeward and wish them all the luck from now on and wish that they all live to a ripe old age. ill keep my desk clean to Adelyn McLellan. I I, Alex Lewis, will my fighting ability to Annice Ellingson hoping she will be able to protect herself better. I, Donna Beck, will my blonde hair and tiny feet to Tommy Neely and my melod- ious voice to Marie Vingelen. I, Iunior Seaver, will all my cards, includ- ing queens, QW. WJ to Harvey Kneaper. I, Mae Vincent, will my feet to anyone who can get them in the right shoes if they promise to treat them carefully. I, Bill Brown, will my Duster to Frank Noffsinger. The time was set to leave Mapleton at live so, oi course, we left promptly at five and then went to Swisshome where we got the rest of the senior members. We then traveled over that everlasting piece of road td' Eugene. Here we stopped long enough for everyone to get shot and then went on leaving behind us, l fear, a broken camera. We then traveled up the Willamette Valley to Salem. We stopped at Salem to see the new capitol building and lunch was eaten there at the State Fair-grounds before we journeYi' ed on to Portland. Immediately upon arriving at Portland we went to the Iantzen knitting mills where a guide was waiting to take us through the entire plant. That night we spent the evening skating before going to the placesiwe staYed ' - the girls at Miss Rattey's home and the boys at an auto camp. The next morning we waved good-bye to good old Oregon and crossed to the Wash- Gradualion The baccalaureate service for the senior class of 1940 was Sunday evening, May 19. in the local church. Achievements and Aims was the topic of the sermon given by Reverend Durdle. Musical selections were given by the glee clubs. Miss Eleanor Morris played the processional and recess- ional marches. The commencement exercises for the class ington side and drove up the Columbia river highway. There was little difference in the scenery but one thing we noticed was that Washington seemed to have even more Oregon Grape than Oregon. At Beacon Rock we stopped to stretch our muscles by climbing up the 4,488 toot trail to the top on the rock where the beacon was located. After our climb the dinner cooked in the government camp was welcomed by all. We then went on to the Bridge of the Gods, but as this was closed we had to go on to Stevenson where we were ferried across the river to Cascade Locks. We then went to Bonneville where Mr. Harris con- ducted us through the dam and fish hatch- eries. We attended a show at Cascade Locks and then went to our cabins at Herman Creek. Then, the next morning we started on our homeward journey going down the highway on the Oregon side. We stopped to see the Multomah falls and at the Vista I-louse. We then headed for the coast and return- ed home by the coast highway. xercisef ' of '40 were held in the high school auditor- ium on Thursday evening, May 23. Mr. Thomas H. Gentle, former professor at the Oregon College of Education'at Monmouth, spoke on Our Embarrasing Leisure. The girls' glee club sang Calm as the Night and Go Thou Dear Music. The proces- sional and recessional marches were play- ed by Miss Bonnie Wheeler. unim S First How - - lfllxiim- Rvrk, Pl'0Si- mini: 'Pom lmstvr, X'ii'o-l'i'i-simlviit: lfiilm-ii Hi-uk, St'l'I't'filI'l 'l'l'l'ilS.2 Niffl l'zirve-r, Suviail 1'l1z1irlimn1 V1-ruon Sw:-xisnn, S0!'Lf0illlt-:Xt-AVIIIS. They played 12 major games and won 7 of them for a .583 average. The Sailors won every League Game and consequently won the Coast Division of the Lane County B League. One highlight of the season was the 'Sailors' return to the B League Tournament after a two year lapse. There, however, the Sailors lost their winning form and bowed out after two straight losses to Thurston and Pleasant Hill. The trip wasn't a complete failure, however, for Alex, Lewis and Iunior Seaver, both sen- iors did receive honorable mention on the all star team. The-main team was composed of Wayne Iohnson, sophomore, Alex Lewis. a senior, as Forwards, Bill Brown, a senior, Center, Marvin Lancaster, sophomore, and Iunior Seaver, a senior, Guards. Of these Bill Brown, Iunior Seaver and Alex Lewis graduate, leaving but two regulars around whom next year's team will be formed. OIIQIJ Clff QCOP The 'Sailorettes' of Mapleton High School completed their second volleyball season in a quite impressive style. They played five important games losing only one for an .800 average. At the 'B' League Basketball Tournament this year a volleyball tourna- ment was staged at the same time. In this. however, the 'Sailorettes' fared no better than the 'Sailorsf Oakridge dropped them from further competition in the first game. The girls, however, won all their league games. The 'Sailorettes' are looking forward to another successful season next year. Their present team will lose only Mae Vin-- cent and Donna Beck through graduation. Gulflandinq Seniovs This Year the faculty ot the Mapleton High School has chosen Mae Vincent and Lynn Ellingson as the outstanding seniors of the class of 1940. The standard on which the students were judged was based on their grades and the activities in which they participated during their tour years. These students had me highest scholastic averages in the class and held important positions in all the many ac- tivities in which they entered. Their coopera- tion with the faculty and other student body members was also considered. The names of these two seniors were en- graved on the scholarship plaque which was given to the high school bythe Master Engravers. Theirs are the third placed on this plaque. A scholarship award was pre- sented to each by the Mapleton High School student body. ' AWG Pds This year the student council again de- cided to give awards to the outstanding student in each activity. The students who received these were chosen by the adviser of each oi the activities and the emblems were presented by Mr. Strong at the com- mencement exercises. Eight scholarship letters were awarded to the students who had the higest grades and who had cooperated with the faculty and other students the best. Those who received letters were Mae Vincent, Marianne Stutz, and Lynn Elling- son, seniors, Marie Vingelen, Elaine Beck, juniors, Leroy Mason, Eleanor Morris and Claire Carver, freshmen. Other pin awards were given for taking part in music, dramatics, newspaper, annual and one entering in the largest number of activities. . One student cannot receive - more than two awards. This gives more of the students a chance to get an award. I7 Wh 1-t7?.7 Y' Wm- 'HIQYUVQY Qvow QP VHXQS C. , N, Y 195+ Ff?E.fHnfen 3 Niowl 'fo 4, J ff, fi 'T h e, I l -r .
