H 23 s e ti ♦ i o r s WE’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN We smile toward the sun, it’s the beginning of a new day. We look toward the heavens, the stars have faded away. There's a smell of specialness in the air, that’ll never come again. Time to leave those books and pencils, and say good-bye to all our friends. Time to take this day that’s so special, and fill it with happiness. Tears and smiles, fears and pains, some filled with emptiness. Let’s walk that path with diligence, forget the fears and pains. This special day is here at last, that seemed so far away. GRADUATION! onlp Oust 25 The officers and advisors for the Class of 1980 are pictured above: Carol Appelman, Treasurer; Mr Steve MacDonald. It seems to come and fade again, beneath the earth's dark ground. It creeps in like darkness, it's untouchable like the wind. The fears we have and the tears we shed are in a moments passing. We learned a lot from each about their vari- ous cultures. They also brought memories filled with laughter and good times. In exchange we shared our way of life with them. For giving us this privilege we wish to say Thank you, from the students at Maple Valley”. First row: Hiroko Sionoyo. Tarja Ojanen. Second row: Jassin Hamud, Lars Sjodelrus, Marianne Sumby, Tord Pranssen. From Sweden we have two exchange students. The first one was Lars Sjodelrus. Lars was a rather shy but really came alive during speech class as he told his classmates about his country. One of the main things about this country that he couldn’t understand was the rules and regulations in our school system, since in his school they had none. Lars loved to play hockey and was an avid fan. but here we put our emphasis on other sports. Lars had great fun during his stay though and especially on the senior trip. Tord Franssen was the second exchange student coming to us from Sweden. Like Lars, he too found it difficult to adjust to the rules, but he did and in doing so he learned another way of life. Among his accomplishments Tord was on the school tennis team, as was Lars. Tord and Lars were both in Gram- mar in an effort to improve their English; ironically, though, they did better than the American students. Tord like Lars, also had a blast on the senior trip to Florida. 110 Jassin Hamud came to us from Germany. He was a unique type of person who could always bring a smile to the saddest of faces. He loved most the people he met during his stay in our country and locked this knowledge in his heart to carry home with him. To our greatest sadness this terrific, though mischievous young man had to leave our country during Jan- uary. six months ahead of schedule. As we wished him fare- well and good luck, he said thanks and he hoped to return. Tarja Ojanen was our Finnish exchange student. She really loved Maple Valley and all its open spaces. Before she came to the U S., she'd never stayed on a farm so because her American home was a farm it made the stay even more memo- rable Tarja had a sweet tooth for licorice and was a good cook. During her stay she was able to visit the West. Washing- ton. D C., and Florida. Tarja was extra lucky because she had a twin sister who was an exchange student at the same time, visiting along the east coast. We get Hiroko Shionoyo from Japan. Hiroko's main goal during her stay in America was to gain a better understanding and pronunciation of the English, which she accomplished. She also learned a lot about the U S. during her stay as she visited the Grand Canyon, Washington, D C., and Florida. One of the things Hiroko liked best about our school was the infor- mality between teachers and students. Hiroko went home with a new hair-do and a new way of life. Marianne Sunby from Denmark also visited our small com- munity. Marianne found that she liked the friendliness between students and teachers. She really liked the kids. also. She loves bicycling, operas, and ballets Among her accom- plishments here in America was that she learned to like pea- nut butter which they don't have in Denmark. She also learned a lot in the printing of the Valley Vision's, our school newspa- per. Although she never took Journalism she was able to help because she was Mrs. Carpenters aide. Main Nashville 133 134 135 I have been a part of Maple Valley School system for the past thirteen years, and I’ve seen a lot of changes come and go within the school. The most important change that I have seen, especially, in the past two years, is the growth between the student body and the faculty. With our theme “We’ve Only Just Begun,” we are trying to capture the true meaning of this growth. I hope you will see a little bit of this growth as you look through this 1980 MAVA- HIAN. With this, I would like to thank all the faculty for helping us make this book a success. I also like to thank Debbie Hummel, our co-editor, Mary Fisher, our advisor, Scott Bultman, our photogra- pher, Bob Weir, our Taylor Publishing Co. Repre- sentative, and the staff. Without all these people this book would not even exist. And, with this I would like to say that truly “We’ve Only Just Begun”. Sincerely yours, Kellie Haas, Editor 136
