For four years, now, I have worked on the Mava- hian, and I have seen it go through many changes. Last year’s edition, Transition,” was dedicated to those changes. However, I would like to dedicate this yearbook to the main reason for its existence — you and I, the students of Maple Valley. It is our team- work, talent, effort, scholastic ability, and school spirit that proves that we are number one! Also, as editor, I would like to thank our advisor, Ms. Shannon Drotar, who was a great help to all of the staff; my assistant editor, Laurie Perkins; Scott Bultman of Bultman Studios for his years of great service; Bob Weir of Taylor Publishing Company for his guidance; and all of the Mavahian staff. In Bettering Conditions Helping out the teachers in the resource rooms are the junior and senior high resource aides. From left to right their names are Mrs. Pat McClellan, Mrs. Karla Hale, and Mrs. Charlene Garvey. These aides help students comprehand the studies they are having trouble in. Keeping everything going in the office as smoothly as possible every school day, and helping bewil- dered students with their problems are the secretaries. From left to right they are Mrs. Judy Laurie, Mrs. Isla Harris, Mrs. Pat Prescott, and Mrs. Cheri Stump. Mrs. Prescott is secretary in the Community School office. Faculty 11 Administration Steps Forward Mr. Carroll Wolff, the Superintendent of M.V., is also the president of Region 6, and a member of the Michigan and American Association of School Administrators Council. He enjoys camping and playing golf. Mr. Tom Mateer involves himself in evaluation of curriculum, working with students, staff, commu- nity implements, and curriculum change. He is the coordinator of Vocational Education and the Talented Program. Mr. Burr Hartenburg occupies his time by being Maple Valley’s principal. In his limited spare time he enjoys building clocks, string art, and bicycling. The following custodians pictured right are Bud Gar- linger, Chris Schantz, Jim Lightner, and Carl Thrun. Mr. Larry Lenz is the assistant principal at Maple Valley. Among his varied school activities he is Student Council advisor and Athletic Director. He also camps and bowls in his spare time. 12 Foculty . . . To Fulfill Occupations Mr. Warren Ison is a figure often seen by stu- dents entering the library. Mr. Ison’s known knowledge of the library is proof that one of his many and varied hobbies is reading. This well- read man could possibly be another name in our library as he is now writing a novel. Mrs. Doris Boomer, an able helper in our school library, spends her time doing one of her hobbies, reading. Outside of reading, and her work in the library, she also enjoys sewing. Preparing the school lunches and serving hundreds of students every day of school, the school cooks go about their jobs. Left to right their names are Mrs. Donna Hickey, Mrs. Donna Mahon, Mrs. Lois Gard- ner, and Mrs. Barb Gagne. Faculty 13 Faculty Charges on . . . Mr. Pat Bengston teaches History and Geography. As well as his teaching he involves himself in coaching the M.V. Golf team. Included in his many hobbies are sailing, tennis, writing, and reading. Mrs. Carol Curtiss teaches Introduction to Literature, Mass Media, Composition, and in her words, “Whatever they throw my way.” In the little spare time she is awarded she indulges in reading, music, and chasing her little boy. Mrs. Denise Berry teaches Jewelry, Introduction to Art, Crafts, Printmaking, as well as one 7th grade section. She occasionally does lettering on certificates, posters, scenery, etc. Gardening and sewing are her hobbies. Ms. Shannon Drotar teaches Spanish 1 -4, and Developmental Reading. She is head of the yearbook staff, as well as the Spanish Club. Ms. Drotar condenses her many interests to photography, playing the guitar, and reading. Mr. Mike Booher coaches J.V. Basketball, and is involved in the Athletic Boosters. His teaching endeavors include math, and science. His hobbies are sports, hunting, and fishing. Mrs. Mary Fox teaches Housing, Consumer Education, 8th grade Home Economics, and Home Ec. 1. Her hobbies, many and varied, are knitting, crocheting, and snowmobiling. Mrs. Dorothy Carpenter teaches Play Production, Drama, Journalism, Creative Writing and Honors English. She helps with the Valley Visions. She enjoys country painting, and reading. Miss Barb Gallagher is an M.V. guidance counselor. Her many outside hobbies include reading, particularly nonfiction and psychological material. 4 Faculty To Better Education Mr. Tom Gibbons teaches Wood Working and Jr. High Shop. He is the Freshman class sponsor. His spare time activities include fishing, canoeing, and gardening. Mr. Greg Hoefler teaches 7th grade math, and General Math. He also coaches Varsity baseball. His hobbies encompass carpentry work and woodworking. Mr. Chuck Gilmore teaches Jr. High science and chemistry. He coaches girl’s and boy’s basketball and track. He enjoys sports. Mr. John Hughes teaches Government, World History, Economics, Sociology, and Current Events. He enjoys golf and fishing. Mrs. Green is an elementary and Junior high counselor. She enjoys bowling, swimming, and playing the organ. Mrs. Junia Jarvie’s many and varied school activities include Home Economics and Child Care. Mr. Keith Greenwald teaches Vocational Agriculture 1,2, 3, and 4, and a cooperative training program. He is also the head of the F.F.A. Mr. Greenwald’s extra curricular activities include hunting, fishing, and gardening. Mr. Mel Kivela teaches Building Trades. The deep entanglement and devotion to his students and profession make his class one of lively achievements. Faculty 15 Teachers Strike . . . Mr. Steve MacDonald teaches Biology, and Life Science. Among his various school activities he coaches wrestling and football. He takes time to involve himself in dog shows, photography and sports. Mr. Robert Kosztowny teaches Geometry, Physics, Astronomy, and Algebra. He involves himself, behind the scenes, in the Junior Play and high school Quiz Bowl. In his spare time he enjoys tennis, reading, and growing plants. Mrs. Lucy Martin teaches Grammar B, Research Paper, Speech, Grammar and Composition, Communications and Developmental Reading. Mrs. Martin is the Senior class sponsor. She also serves on an administration board. She is an excessive reader. Miss Marianne Martin teaches Introduction to Art, Ceramics, Sculpture, Advanced Art, Commercial Art, 7th grade Art, and Drawing and Painting. In her leftover time, which she has little of, she enjoys sewing and photogra£h _ _ Miss Jackie Peek teaches Physical Education. She also coaches Varsity Girl’s basketball and softball, and advises the girls’ Varsity Club. Among her many outside hobbies she enjoys sewing, knitting, and writing. Mr. Russ Koons teaches Science, and Oceanography. He is the Senior class advisor. In his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing cards. Mr. Bill Kipp teaches Metal Shop. He is also the Junior class advisor. He occupies his spare time by fishing, and home remodeling. Mr. Guenther Mittelstaedt teaches 7th grade geography. He involves himself in several school activities which include being a J.V. football assistant, Freshman basketball, and J.V. girl’s softball. 16 Faculty . . . Out for Originality Mrs. Pat Reinbold directs elementary vocal music at Maplewood, Fuller, and Kellogg, and also conducts the M.V. choir. She involves herself in concerts, assists in musicals and directs the Valley Aires. Mr. Jerry Reese is co-advisor of the Boys Varsity Club, J.V. Girl's Basketball, and Varsity Boys Basketball and teaches seventh grade science. His spare time is spent golfing and thinking of things to keep me from doing remodeling jobs around the house. Mr. Gary St. Onge teaches General Business and Accounting. He also takes a tremendous amount of pleasure in fishing, and camping during his off hours. Mr. Ward Rooks is one of our pragmatic M.V. counselors. He is also the Freshman class sponsor. In his spare time he enjoys horses, following the Detroit Tigers, music, and reading. Mr. Mel Ruohonen teaches history, and physical education. He also coaches football, basketball, track, and night school. In his spare time he involves himself in a church council, and bowling. Mrs. Carol Ripple teaches 7th grade English. Her school activities include coaching 7th grade girl’s basketball. Outside hobbies involve reading, working with plants in her garden, and going to Western Michigan University. Mr. Ron Rosin teaches 8th grade English. A few of his many hobbies include gardening, woodcutting, hunting, golf, bowling, jogging, and bridge. Mr. Chris Ricketts teaches U.S. History, Current Events, and Minority Groups. His school activities include coaching wrestling. He enjoys sports, reading, and travel. Faculty 17 Faculty Strives for Additional Achievements Mr. Ed Sampson skillfully teaches 7th and 8th grade physical education, U.S. History and World Geography. In his spare time he indulges himself in bowling, tennis and golf. Mrs. Gail Sapp teaches General Business, and Shorthand 1 and 2 In her spare time she enjoys sewing, horseback riding, reading and skiing. Miss Sharlot Sours teaches Math, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Advanced Math. Among her school activities she is the advisor to the National Honor Society. She endeavors to travel, knit, and sew as much as possible during her spare time. Mrs. Sue Steffel teaches Short Stories, Grammar A, Novels, and Communications. Among her spare time activities, her ecstacy shows through clearly in her reading, sailing, and sewing. Miss Michelle Skovera teaches 7th and 8th grade English and physical education. She also finds time to be a J.V. and Varsity Volleyball coach and the girl’s track team coach. Her spare time is energetically filled with swimming and sailing. Mrs. Julie Swartz teaches Grammar and Composition, Myths, and A.T.L. Included in her many school activities are Sophomore class advisor, and the score keeper for the girls volleyball and basketball teams. She likes spending time with her family, and building her home. Mr. Dan Watson, aside from succeeding endeavors in the teaching of 8th grade Math, also takes time out of his demanding schedule to coach football, sponsor Varsity Club, hunting, gardening, and raising dogs fill his spare time. Mr. Tom Taylor teaches Architectural Drafting, Shop 1, and 7th grade Math. He coaches Cross Country, Track, and is the Junior class advisor. He enjoys hunting, and working on his house. 18 Foculty Our Faculty Is Number One! Mrs. Audrey Watson teaches Typing and Office Block. She also video tapes all Varsity football games. Her outside activities include bowling, sewing, reading, and knitting. Mr. David Westbay directs Jr. Sr. High bands, and those of Kellogg, and Maplewood elementary schools. He also conducts three pep bands and the marching band. His number 1 love affair is with music. Bible study is close behind. Mrs. Mary Aquirre teaches reading. In her spare time she enjoys reading, painting, and sewing. Mrs. Aquirre is also in charge of the library of paper back books in our school, which is often used by students. Mr. Ernie Jacoby coordinated all activities for the 6th grade camp. He supervises adult education. His energy and zest for life astounds all. He is also in charge of the community enrichment classes. Mrs. Flynn spends her varied amount of school time working in the Resource Room. She is the football cheerleading sponsor. She enjoys skiing, paddleball, and camping. Another recent time consumer is her new dog. Mrs. Bev Black is involved in the Resource Room, and sponsors Jr. High cheerleading and the Igloo. She enjoys sewing, and reading. Mrs. Clift indulges a good deal of her time in the Resource Room. She also involves herself in being the Sophomore class sponsor, and the cheerleading sponsor. Miss Holmquist is a special consultant. This class sponsored a dance and entered a float in the Homecoming parade. The Freshman class also sold candy bars to start saving for future expenses. During Homecoming Week, they won the tug-of- war, and the Junior Powder-Puff team tied the Seniors. Besides selling fruit, the seniors also sold candy and had good results with both. The Senior Play was a huge success. The Class of 1978 accomplished their goal of going on a Carribean Cruise for their Senior trip. The members of the Class of 1978 feel they have far exceeded the goals attained by previous classes. The Seniors have set many precedents and accom- plished many feats. As freshmen, they followed, but as seniors, they have learned to lead. The Seniors know the meaning of both failure and success, and from all of their experiences, they have matured. The Seniors are proud to say they are the Class of 1978. D 72 Activities 1977 Homecoming Week activi- ties followed tradition except for one, Powderpuff Football. Neither team proved to be the champion as the game finished with a tie score. At the Homecoming game, rain dampened the festivities, but did not hamper the excitement involved. This year’s theme was “Reach the Stars.” The two people who were chosen by the student body as their stars were Kathy Dixon and Chuck Reid. The two- story red brick structure with cutstone foundation, and an off-center tower over the front entrance, was constructed with funds solicited from the town- ship and village. The big- gest news today is that the entire WMVP staff has retired. Our staff was made up of the eighteen-member Physics class. Each day we received, rewrote, and announced the facts.
