Under Mr. Donald lYutter's supervision, the depart- ment trains the students for active citizenship in the com- munity, nation, and the world. Classes acquaint students with the economic situation ofthe world. To increase student interest, trips are taken to Fort Ticon- deroga and Cooperstown. HI Speak For Democracyn and other contests are initiated, and for outstanding students, participation in Model Congress, and the Citizenship Con- ference at Syracuse University are made available. They approve expenditures, keep up to date with new teaching methods and equip- ment, establish the yearly budget and set school policies, and insure that the set policies are enforced. Under the supervision of Mr. Richard Bamberger, the teachers of the English department recognize the individuality of each student, so that they might better aid in the development of each student's 'specific talents. This recognition is accomplished through expository writing, interpretive reading and extensive analysis of literature, as well as detailed studies of the magazines, newspapers, and the other mass media of communica- tions. As a progressive department and the largest in the school, it continually offers new. courses and experi- ments with new concepts of education. Recently ini- tiated have been courses in speech and drama, reading, and a college-level seminar program for college-entrance seniors.
