Dave Trubica Dick Barrett jack Beechuk Chuck Oymaian Letterman Nei' me The Maple Heights Mustangs Varsity football team opened the 1957 season by winning a hard fought game with lfuclid High in the last minute of play, 25-19. The next two games were with the powerhouses of the Lake lfrie Conference, Shaker and Cleveland Heights, and in both contests Maple came out on the losing end of the score. In the inaugural conference game, Nlaple and Garfield Heights, two bitter arch rivals, fought to a I3-I3 tie. The following week Bedford upset the favored Mustangs. Snapping back, Maple knocked off the defending champions, the Berea Braves , by the score of 21-6. Maple then lapsed back into losing ways, dropping successive games to Brush and Shaw. The Mustangs ended their toughest season by edging lVilloughby I4-13. The Maple Mustangs didn't have a first place team but played their best and tried like cham- pions. The coaches tried to make better football players and men out of them. They didn't always prove themselves as football players, but as men, they didl For this we thank our coaches, C. R. Haerr and line coach, Marvin Bowen. Two mustangs were named to the Greater Cleveland Conference All-Star Teamg they were Chuck Oymaian, the right guard, and Dave Trubica, the right end. Jack Beechuk, the Mustang right tackle, made the Conference Second Team. No one will forget Dave Trubica going high into the air to pull down the game winning pass against Euclid, the auspicious debut of Chubby Chops , the new emergency ambulance, the unsung and steady play of Stan Bransky, how jim Opatrany took to the air and connected on seven straight passes, the steady line bucking of First-down lid Peters, and the absorbing punishment that the line had to take! These and many other things made the 1957 Mustang season one of the most exciting in the history of Maple Heights High. Bob Leiderbach Gene Heilinger breaks through the line. Stan Bransky is pulled down unwillingly. f . rug-fff. '1 ' ' -- ,sw 17
