The next two games were with the powerhouses of the Lake lfrie Conference, Shaker and Cleveland Heights, and in both contests Maple came out on the losing end of the score. In the inaugural conference game, Nlaple and Garfield Heights, two bitter arch rivals, fought to a I3-I3 tie. The following week Bedford upset the favored Mustangs. Snapping back, Maple knocked off the defending champions, the Berea Braves , by the score of 21-6. Maple then lapsed back into losing ways, dropping successive games to Brush and Shaw. The Mustangs ended their toughest season by edging lVilloughby I4-13. The Maple Mustangs didn't have a first place team but played their best and tried like cham- pions. The coaches tried to make better football players and men out of them. They didn't always prove themselves as football players, but as men, they didl For this we thank our coaches, C. R. Haerr and line coach, Marvin Bowen. Two mustangs were named to the Greater Cleveland Conference All-Star Teamg they were Chuck Oymaian, the right guard, and Dave Trubica, the right end. Jack Beechuk, the Mustang right tackle, made the Conference Second Team. No one will forget Dave Trubica going high into the air to pull down the game winning pass against Euclid, the auspicious debut of Chubby Chops , the new emergency ambulance, the unsung and steady play of Stan Bransky, how jim Opatrany took to the air and connected on seven straight passes, the steady line bucking of First-down lid Peters, and the absorbing punishment that the line had to take! These and many other things made the 1957 Mustang season one of the most exciting in the history of Maple Heights High. Bob Leiderbach Gene Heilinger breaks through the line. Stan Bransky is pulled down unwillingly. f . rug-fff. '1 ' ' -- ,sw 17 nv 1 -pr Row I: R. Prikryl, Manager, R. Johnston, G. Lymke, F. Lisy, G. Quay, E, Simicek, B. lllig, Mcliowan, N. Talboo, D. Varsity Football Can you imagine picking yourself up out of the football held sod and mud every week to Hnd that, after all the punishment you have taken for four quarters, your team has lost again? This certainly is dis- heartening, but the Maple Heights Junior Varsity football team kept coming back each game trying to grind out a victory. I know that Coaches Smith and Knoll never gave up hope for the team. VVC hope that more of the student body will get out of the J-V games and encourage these boys. Remember, these boys are the backbone of next year's varsity team. Corsaro C26D, rushing Bedford's quarterback. 'av .1 Row Ii Boege, D. josefson, Davis, B. Hetzel, M. Davis, R. Csongei, R. Coached by Mr. R. Smith, the junior high had a very successful season this year. The only loss was to Patina Schaff, 20-O. The little mustangs beat Bedford and Garfield, our arch rivals by scores of 7-6 and I3-O, respectively. These freshmen are very enthusiastic about their team. Practicing long hours in all kinds of weather gives the boys the kind of training they need to become good football players. A sense of fair play and cooperation is instilled in them in order to prepare them for the varsity team in fu- ture years. He's got the ball. Mr. liverson's jokes and charming personality helped to make this one of the most enjoyable years the choir has ever had. Consisting of eighty juniors and seniors, with a few sophomores in the tenor section, the choir gave a arsity hoir Hi-Tones M. DiPenti, L. Yarmusch, M. Travis, I. Szczech, M. Brown, N. Con- sisting of sixty members from the soph- omore class, it did an excellent job while performing at the Christmas Concert and certainly added finesse to the sophomore Thanksgiving Assembly. The Cadet Choir was formed approx- imately four years ago, for it became im- possible to include sophomores in the growing membership ofthe Varsity Choir. It acts as a stepping stone between Glee Club and Varsity Choir. Not only is valuable music experience provided, but also the importance of co- operation and teamwork is demonstrated. Ensembles j. The ofiicers, elected by the group, take over in Mr. Everson's absence. G XVithin the Glee Clubs are select voices which are chosen for the ninth grade Mixed Chorus. Also, from the two Clubs, ensembles are selected to do special 7 U numbers in the concerts. In these groups the students learn more music and how to improve their four-part harmony. As members of the Glee Clubs, the students gain a G great deal of music knowledge which will aid them in their climb to the top-Varsity Choir. Row 1: C. Dyser, Sloan, K. Kopta, B. Sondej, l.. The members, one from each homeroom, are chosen in order that they might bring about better cooperation in solving of problems arising from the student body. The Council also aims toward promoting unselfish school spirit and achieving a closer relationship between the student and teacher. Some of their year-around projects are operating the student supply store, the lost and found department, the recrea- tional facilities, and appointing depend- able students as hallguards. Besides these beneficial duties, this or- ganization also sponsors an annual dance, takes care of arranging football and bas- ketball queens' ceremonies, and holds a banquet each year for its members and the students afiiliated with the Council's functions. all uards I'l'1llgLllTLlS 1re st ltloned IU the halls to m untun order If tll times lnd to help word confuslon durmg the school day Some of their duties 1re to check for pis ses, chetk lockers, md pxck up xfter lltter bugs lo become 1 h lllguard 1 student must be of depend lble ch ir lcter ind of good Qtillldlllg He IS assigned to 1 post by the heuten mt ot th If perlod Dlck Blrrett, the clptaln, wls chosen by the h1llgu1rd supervlsor, Nlr James G1tes, md lpproved by the Student Counul lt IS hxs responslblllty to dlrect 'md superx 1se the fmctxons of the hftllguzrds Row 1 R Barrett F Sessana L Yarmusch Row 2 Erhardt Nlovak M Brown Rowj B Marks B Llederbach J Brown Row4 J Kubnca -if' V -gl. To qualify for membership one must l earn ten points by active participation X through acting, working on properties, costumes, make up, and publicity. At the end of the school year the organ- ization presents an award to the best actor and also a trophy to a deserving 76 thespian. According to the Girls' Board, good citizenship is important and therefore they try to pass it on to others. During the year they give out awards to the most courteous girl and boy of each class. These students are chosen on the basis of courtesy, attitude, character, and ability to handle responsibilities. Then, at the end of the year, awards are given to the most courteous girl and boy in the school. There are twelve girls on Girls' Board, three from each grade. Their big event of the year is the annual semi-formal, which attracts the interest of everyone in the school. Although the club is small, the girls, with their advisors Miss VViltshire and Miss Huebner, do a line job at keep- ing the bedding in the clinic clean, deco- rating the Christmas tree, and working out other school problems. 1 . Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors a student may obtain, for as its name im- plies, the Honor Society is a national organization, and is recognized in schools all over the country. Therefore, the goal of every student should be to achieve membership in this organization. To qual- ify, a student must be in either the upper ten percent of his Senior class, or upper five per cent of Junior class. He is then rated by the faculty and members of the National Honor Society on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Some activities of the Honor Society are recording points for homeroom of the year, compiling the honor roll, and spon- soring a dance. This year's ofhcers are: President, Clif- ton YVittg Vice President, Marilyn Brown, Secretary, Barbara Blatnikg Treasurer, Charles Koman.
