DEDICATION DEDICATED T0 AN IDEAL Servicemen sporting those snappy Cl haircuts and Navy Blues are not so evident in the halls of Maple Heights High, for, because of the war's end, the winged gold eagle adorns the Iapels of visiting vets. Drab olive and navy blue are being replaced by covent cloth and soft brown tweed. Pleasure jaunts in that slick little convertible, now equipped with four new tires and a tank filled with gas, are no longer an unpatriotic act. Girls who 'once had cried over the lack of prom bait, are now shed- ding tears of joy, for their men are coming home, Reconversion from war to peace may be in full swing all over the world, but in Maple Heights the same red brick high-school overlooks the same walk, the same willow trees offer a peaceful haven from the sun when you and your friends just have to sit somewhere and gab. Though long since disabled, the sun dial provides a perfect background for snapshots of your best friends. Winter brings with it cold home-rooms, and spring ushers in bad cases of Spring Fever. Though we do every thing possible to get out of classes, we do have to attend a few each day, taking great pains with our trig, boasting about our poetry. Tests aren't any easier or report cards more A -covered. School Spirit soars with our team's victories and drops with defeats. but our cheers are just as loud. We continue to publish our own newspaper, carry on panel discus- sions, get excused to attend church on days of obligation. We carry on as free people, not as slaves. We hope that Maple Heights High is a reflection of the rest of Amer- ica. But then, we know that all over the country, the citizens of the United States may feel an independent spirit - not restricted by the bonds of tyr- anny. The essence that says laugh, cry, or shout whenever you please is ours. We call this freedom. This freedom belongs to us Americans- liberty is ours. Born into an independent world, every breath we have taken has been unhampered. Created by time and the hard work of the courageous men who have gone before, our liberty's strength must not be weakened. It has been strong enough to withhold all the enemies who have attempted to tear down this great ideal. Never forget this liberty, for we, the youth of today and the citizens of tomorrow, shall be its guardian and protector. Perhaps, too, some day all the people of the world will also know what it means to be free. lt is with this hope the graduating class of l946 dedicates this page of the Maple Leaf to an ideal - Freedom.
