Onward the Panthers After the Maple City Panthers finished the 1951 basketball season by winning the WLT Conference trophy, two new teams were added making a total of seven teams. This gave the Pan- thers a full schedule with 9 teams for the 51-52 season. Confer- ence games were with Glen Arbor, Empire, Isadore, Fife Lake, Buckley, and Rapid City. Elberta, Elk Rapids, and Lake Leelanau were the games outside of the conference. The Panthers opened the basketball season last fall by an easy victory over Rapid City and steadily gaining power up to Christ- mas vacation, only losing one conference game. After vacation the boys went to a shooting slump which was the main contributing factor in losing to Isadore and Empire thus forfeiting the trophy for this year. The most thrilling game of the year was the second game with Isadore when the Panthers took revenge for the beating they re- ceived in the first game. Before a record crowd of about 400 fans the boys in blue and gold held the Isadore Tigers to a narrow mar- gin through three quarters and with less than 2 minutes to play a basket by Arvin Garvin gave a 2 point lead. Cleverly stalling, the Panthers drew the Tigers out leaving an opening that Glen Coleman slid into to score 2 more points. The Varsity team, has been especially strong on defense with Bill Miller and Ray Waslawski leading the way in guard position. Bill suffered foot injury which put him off the team in Feb. and Reynold Brow and Robert Zientek did a very fine job in the po- sition. Alex Peplinski held down the center while Paul Galla, Glen Coleman, and Gene Flaska were speedy forwards on the team..
