VALEDICTORIAN Parents, Faculty, Fellow Students and Friends: We, the members of the class of 52, have just completed 12 years of more or less diligent study in an effort to refine and cultivate our minds. It is chiefly through your assistance and untiring efforts that makes this memorable day possible. Now that we attained this goal we as individuals must strive to attain new goals. Having reached this achievement we must enter on a ne wpath in the road of life. Some of us will enter higher institutions of learning, others will start business or pro- fessional careers, some will be called upon to serve our country, while still others will be homemakers. Undoubtedly a few will rise in prominence while others will remain ob- scure, but whether prominent or boscure we will never forget our school or school days, and especially this last day. The events of this day, our teachers, and our friends, it will be these old friends we will cherish longest. We are now about to leave this school which has been so instrumental in shaping our lives. At present, we do not realize what we have gained by our associations together, not only in the appreciation of educational values, but also in the friends we have made, and the good times we have had together. As we grow older and look back upon our high school acquaintances and our experiences, I think we shall more fully appreciate what they have done for us, and more fully understand what they meant to us. In years to come these experiences will be our choicest memories even though we may choose to be many miles away from Maple City High. The time has come when we must go into our separate walks of life, so we take this opportunity as a class and as individuals, to give to our parents, teachers, and friends our sincerest thanks and appreciation for the kindness and help bestowed upon us in our High School career. William Miller SALUTA RORI AN Parents, Teachers, Schoolmates, and Friends: we bid you welcome to this, the commencement of the class of 1952. Your presence here shows us that you appreciate our high school work. We are glad to know that others take an in- terest in our graduation and in this day which means so much to us. This is one of the last times that we shall be together as a class. It is this day that we bid farewell to our teachers and classmates. For some of us, this Commencement means the real be- ginning of some occupation which we intend to make our life’s work. For others; it means a continuation of study and investigation in college. To all of us, it is the beginning of a time when we must make our own decisions, and shoulder a greater amount of responsibility. Our exercises this evening are of great importance to us and we hope of interest to you. Therefore we, the class of 1952, once more bid you wel- come, and dedicate our program to you. L. T. Conference Trophy from the President of the Conference during the last game at Fife Lake. September--During the first few weeks of school the freshman were welcomed to High School by an (initiation) Party. October--Welcoming this fall month, the students of the Centerville Twp. School Unit gave an annual Harvest Carnival. November--The Juniors presented a three act Comedy named Funny Brats. This month also officially opened the Basket- ball season with the Seniors selling candy, pop and popcorn at the home games. Also another feature of this month was the beginning of Mr. Glovers Glee Club and Band Practice. December-- Magi’s Gift was an operetta presented by the Seventh and Eighth Graders under the direction of Mr. Clover and Marie Knoth. 1952 March--The boys attended the 16th annual John Deere Day. Mr. Simon returned with $15 for our recreational activities. April--The Juniors gave a Prom for the Seniors, April 25. May--The Senior Play Dizzy and Daffy was presented May 2. The Senior trip, one of the brightest spots of the Senior year, was taken during the first weeks of May. The class went to Niagara Falls, via, Canada. The week of May 25 -28 was our Graduation Week. Sunday, May 25, was Bac- cularette Services. The Commencement Exercises were held Wednesday May 28, 1952, closing out the Seniors last year of School. I athletics Onward the Panthers After the Maple City Panthers finished the 1951 basketball season by winning the WLT Conference trophy, two new teams were added making a total of seven teams. This gave the Pan- thers a full schedule with 9 teams for the 51-52 season. Confer- ence games were with Glen Arbor, Empire, Isadore, Fife Lake, Buckley, and Rapid City. Elberta, Elk Rapids, and Lake Leelanau were the games outside of the conference. The Panthers opened the basketball season last fall by an easy victory over Rapid City and steadily gaining power up to Christ- mas vacation, only losing one conference game. After vacation the boys went to a shooting slump which was the main contributing factor in losing to Isadore and Empire thus forfeiting the trophy for this year. The most thrilling game of the year was the second game with Isadore when the Panthers took revenge for the beating they re- ceived in the first game. Before a record crowd of about 400 fans the boys in blue and gold held the Isadore Tigers to a narrow mar- gin through three quarters and with less than 2 minutes to play a basket by Arvin Garvin gave a 2 point lead. Cleverly stalling, the Panthers drew the Tigers out leaving an opening that Glen Coleman slid into to score 2 more points. The Varsity team, has been especially strong on defense with Bill Miller and Ray Waslawski leading the way in guard position. Bill suffered foot injury which put him off the team in Feb. and Reynold Brow and Robert Zientek did a very fine job in the po- sition. Alex Peplinski held down the center while Paul Galla, Glen Coleman, and Gene Flaska were speedy forwards on the team..
