cfjff-lb . Ailub '300° m — About The Panthers — The fall of 1949 was the first year maple City High School stepped into official athletic competition since the SCHOOL WENT OUT OF EX I STANCE 10 OR MORE YEARS AGO. MOST OF THE BOYS WERE COMING OUT FOR THEIR FIRST YEAR OF BASKETBALL AND ONLY SEVERAL HAD EVER PLAYED IN AN OFFICIAL GAME. HOW- EVER, WHAT THE BOYS LACKED IN EXPERIENCE THEY MORE THAN MADE UP FOR IN ENTHUSIASM. THEY WENT TO WORK ON THE COURT AND WITHIN A SHORT TIME HAD MASTERED THE RULES OF GAME AND HAD ACQUIRED CONSIDERABLE SKILL. ThE BEGINNING OF THE SEC- OND SEMESTER WAS BRIGHTENED BY SENIORS JOHN WHEAT AND DON Stormer becoming eligible. Both had several season exper- iences. m w v : Mi y Spring of 1950 ended very successfully with the Panth- ers WINNING 9 OUT OF 17 GAMES. SOME OF THE HOTTEST CONTESTS OF THE YEAR WERE: LELANAU SCHOOLS GAME—A GIVE AND TAKE GAME ALL THE WAY THROUGH--WE WON 53-52; EMPIRE GAME WAS A HEARTBREAKER--WE LOST 16-20; AND WITH GLEN ARBOR—AN EXCIT- ING GAME—WE TOPPED THEM 23-18. The fall of 1950 found the team entact except for Don AND JOHN. It APPEARED TO BE A MOST PROMISING YEAR WITH MORE EXPERIENCE, A LITTLE MORE WEIGHT AND SOME ADDED HEIGHT. Also 1950 say the formation of the wlt-Class D Conference. Besides Maple City; Buckley, Fife Lake, Glen Arbor, and ISADORE WERE COMPETING FOR THE TROPHY.VARS ITY LINEUP WAS AS follows; Forwards: Gene Flaska, Glen Coleman, Paul Galla, Reynold Brow. Center: Peter Schettedk, Arvin Garvin, Wm. miller. Guards: Harold Thompson, Leonard Mallory, Carl Moss AND RAY WASLAWSKI. jack Rader, Coach . i' i :i iik'1,1 • it 1 v;' 3 V
