Suit yourself' I snapped and I slammed the door, leaving him alone just once did I turn back to look at him. He sat motion- less his face pressed against the window, very young, very small, in that big car And in that Instant I knew I recognized that look. It had been mine once, and now it was his. It would always be his to remember, to cry over, to hate with. I wanted to scream with his pam With my pain. Come Mama urged Let him be. Let him mope, He Il get over it I turned to face her this woman who was my mother. This woman from whom I was not nor could I ever be again, so removed I slipped my arm through hers, and we walked close together through the raindrops, bound by a common tyranny of adulthood, by something be- yond reason and stronger than will. You re right I lied as we mounted the steps to the entrance of the restaurant By the time he gets married, he ll have forgotten all about it ...Liz Sanchez Il ' II I II II II , . THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT Weaving in and out, dodging careless big feet, Gerald made his way down the bustling, big city side- walk, his grubby little hand holding tightly the few coins in his patched pocket. His jeans, obviously well- worn hand-me-downs, were still several sizes too big, a problem solved if you remembered to roll them up and not put anything of value into the front pockets, be- cause they had a tendency to gape open at the tops. But that didn't worry Gerald, not today. He just clenched his fist tighter and thought about whatever it is five-year-old boys think about when they're on a very important mission. He had been waiting all week for today. His little kool-aid stained mouth turned up in a grin as he thought about the present. Two carnations, a red one and a white one. These would be his birthday present to Mama. And he knew she would like them. She'd said so herself when he asked her. His eyes searched the crowd for the flower girl that stood on the cor- ner. There she is! Little legs moved flleflections of a Sandg 'yesterdag Trembling sadness of melancholy dreams Strawberry patches have withered and died Unsuppressed emotions now bursting their seams Echoing a windsong a whippoorwill cried jasmine and Roses you said would be mine A song in the mountains and sweet apple wine But what am I left with here in my hand The symbol of nothing- a small grain of sand ...laney Guthrie faster as two little hands helped keep people out of the way. A stray dog decided it was a game of chase and joined in. But he didn't expect it to be over so soon as he plunged headfirst into Gerald's body, send- ing boy and dog sprawling in oppo- site directions. The hollow sound of metal hitting metal and echoing down to emptiness brought Ger- ald's hand quickly to an empty poc- ket. A sigh shook his whole body as he stifled the sob that threatened to surface. He sat on the sidewalk, cradling a blond head with his hands when a cold, wet nose poked itself between his arms. Gerald looked up into the scraggliest but most apolo- getic face he'd ever seen on a dog. The dog plopped down beside him, offering himself to Gerald's tears. All of a sudden, Gerald sat straight up and dried his face with a sleeve. He took hold of the dog's ears and tugged gently on them.
