CINDY CAPPELLE Senior Enthusiasm is an essential characteristic of a cheerleader, and Cindy Cappelle, one of Manzano's two senior cheerleaders who were chosen for the second time to the varsity squad, demonstrates this trait to an enviable degree. In fact, Cindy has been one of Manzano's cheerleaders during each of her high school years since she was a Baron Cheeleader as a sophomore, Last year Cindy was a part of the cheerleading team which was chosen as one of the four outstanding teams in the state and were given the -privilege of leading cheers at the North-South All-Star football game. The same enthusiasm which makes her an outstanding cheerleader also makes her an eager and willing participant in the other activities of the school. Some of her success as a cheerleader must also be due to her skill in gymnastics, and she was an AAU gymnastics champion as a sophomore. Her hobbies, in addition to gymnastics, include sewing and designing fashions. She was a model in a Simplicity style show as a sophomore and is an outstanding home econom- ics student. Cindy plans to major in physical education next year when she will be attending Colorado State College. Being chosen for Who's Who for the second year. senior Bruce Markham is one of only two students so honored. An out- standing athlete, Bruce, who plans on majoring in physical edu- cation with the ambition of becoming a coach, will attend the University of New Mexico on a football scholarship. In fact. Bruce, a fullback, was the first player to whom the University's new head coach offered a scholarship this season. One of the four seniors at Manzano to letter all three years in football, Bruce has also lettered twice in basketball and twice in track. He was chosen as one of the honorary co-captains of the 1968 football squad, won honorable mention all-state, and was named to the all-city football team and the North-South All-Star team. In conjunction with his athletic participation, Bruce has been a mem- ber of both HM Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is the president of the FCA this year. He enjoys the respect of his fellow students as evidenced by his having been elected vice president of the senior class and a Student Council representative. As a class officer and a student Council member, he has been active in the organization of activities and in such projects as decorating for the Junior-Senior prom and the Homecoming assembly. Since Carol plans a career in journalism after attending either Stanford or Southern Methodist University, one of her greatest responsibili- ties and honors was being editor-in-chief of the ROYAL MONARCH, She continued her active participation in Student Council as chairman of various projects, a delegate to state and district conventions, and an Exchange Day delegate. Another major responsibility for Carol, whose hobbies are playing the piano, horseback riding, photography and writing , was serving as presi- dent of the Albuquerque Youth Council CAROL TRAUB Senior BRUCE AINSWORTH Senior A fine athlete and a talented student, senior Bruce Ainsworth has con- centrated the majority of his after-school hours during his high school career on athletics. His emphasis on athletics has not interferred, however, with his studies as he maintains a high grade point average and was named to the first semester honor roll with a 4. average. One of only four seniors to have earned their third varsity letter in football this season, Bruce was a halfback on the Monarch squad and in this position was twice picked as the city's outstand- ing back of the week, In addition Bruce was chosen to play on the North All-Star football team this summer and was awarded a trophy as the most valuable senior player on the 1967-1968 football squad. Playing the outfield, Bruce was a valuable member of the 1967 team which captured the New Mexico State Baseball Championship. .7 CHUCK PETERSON Senior Holding one of the top positions available to a student, Student Body President Chuck Peterson has distinguished himself and the school by his conduct of the office. ln addition to student government, Chuck has had other interests in his high school career including music. As a sophomore Chuch was a member of the marching band and he was the accompanist for the Honor Choir as a junior. A student Council representative as a junior, Chuck attended a summer workshop which helped prepare him for his future responsibility as president of the student body. Chosen as a Boys' State delegate, Chuck was a county commissioner at the summer session, a member of Staters' Club and resigned the vice-presidency of Staters' Club in order to run for student body president. He is also a member of Interna- tional Club but he devotes the major portion of his time to overseeing the projects and activities of the Student Council. Winner of the city Elks Youth Leadership Award, Chuck has advanced to the state competition. A consist- ently fine student who has been on the honor roll at Manzano throughout his high school career, Chuck represents Manzano at state and district student council meetings, the Exchange Day program and other local home- comings in addition to presiding over Manzano's Homecoming assembly and a majority of the other assemblies throughout the year. Planning to major in accounting, he hopes to attend North Texas State University at Denton, or Jacksonville University in Florida. His major hobby is playing the pipe organ, and he has taken organ lessons at UNM for three years. Sweetness coupled with dependability and competency has won for sen- ior Pam McCan the Whe's Who recognition this year and the affection and good opinions of her fellow classmates and of her teachers. Pam's superior scholarship placed her in National Honor Society, and her fellow scholars chose her to serve as president this year. As president of the Honor Society, Pam was largely beneficial in the organization of the senior counseling sessions which were initiated this year to advise students on the selection of a college or the choice of a post-high school career. Her election to the senior Inner Council placed on her a responsibility for many of the Student Council activities, and her willingness to work and her reliability made her an invalua- ble aid to the activities of the school. Having belonged to Pep Club and Creative Dance as an underclassman, Pam also participated in Ski Club, National Spanish Honor Society, International Club, Tennis Club and Stu- dent Council. Serving as a faculty assistant, Pam enjoys sewing, skiing, swimming, tennis, and playing the piano. A major in math will be Pam's goal when she attends either the University of Colorado or the University of Kansas. PAM MCCAN Senior
