Not only should a student be able to adequately read and write English, but he should also be familiar with the important literature of the world. The English department at Manzano fulfills both of these goals. Sophomores study a general survey of literature, juniors study American literature, and seniors may study either world or English literature. In the junior and senior years the student may elect to have his literature courses correlated with his history studies. All of the English courses give the student a richer knowledge of world litera- ture and the English language. ESTHER LARSON Department Chairman U. S. History Sociology Bev Medley and Kelly Chappelle point out parts on the globe in a World Geography class. One of the most important things a student can take from his school years is a sound knowledge of his world. Of particular importance is'an understanding of the present world situation. In view of this need, the Manzano history depart- ment offers such courses as economics, sociology, world geography, political science, and world problems. But in order to better understand the world of today, the student must also have a basic knowledge of the past. Courses such as United States history, world history, and Southwest history go far toward giving the student this necessary background information. The student who participates in the social studies program at Manzano will leave with a better understanding of the world in which he lives.
