Five returning lettermen, Herman Garcia, Bob Myer, Jimmy Reed, Bruce Markham, and Fred Williams, will be the nucleus of the Manzano 1968 track squad as they prepare for the season. With fewer lettermen than ever before, the Monarchs under the coaching of Bill Wolffarth and assistant Walter Brock will be a team which could conceivably come up with some unexpected wins, however, they are unpredicta- ble at this point. Early hopes for the season were dampened when accidents and transfers cost the Monarchs some of their brightest hopes. A severe automobile-motorcycle accident incapacitated sophomore Jimmy Gutierrez, who had turned in a fine performance during the fall cross country season and B-team, back row L-R: Phil Ortiz, Wally Holden, Dave Otis, Terry Harris, Jim Woolridge, Tom Short, Tom Ferris, Mike Nail, Mike Gray, Steve Williams, Rus- sell Wild. front row: Larry Phillips, Ken Zirwas, Steve Lew, Tim Eichenberg, Rich Neal, Mark Montoya, Clyde Lowe, Mark Fox. was described by the coaches as potentially the greatest two-miler and distance runner that Manzano had ever boasted. His pre-season workouts had led the coaching staff to believe that he would break the school record early in the season and would go on to set new records. At presstime, Jimmy, who had been in critical condition, was improving somewhat, he had regained consciousness and was beginning to move slightly, however, there is no indication as to the permanent extent of his injuries. The Monarchs will be at- tempting to improve on last season's record which saw them win only one state honor graduate Ben Best's third in the low hurdles. Mile Relay L-R Rex Sewell, Fred Williams, Bob Myer, Herman Garcia Terry Ascraft, pole vaulter, goes up and over for a practice vault

Of the five team members, three of them, Joe Davalos, Dennis Ray and Craig Pierson, are returning from last year, when a sudden death play-off broke their second place tie in the state tournament and gave them the third place trophy. Coach Buddy Cook, as well as the Manzano student body, are looking for another fine performance by the team this year. The Baron golf team under the direction of Coach DuWayne Blackshear is also begin- ning practice sessions although the week-long teachers' strike delayed the beginning of all of the spring sports in the city. Chuck Whitehead sinks a ten footer. Craig Pierson, one of three returning letterman, tees off
