The Manzano Monarchs basketball team, starting from scratch after having all but two of last years lettermen, closed their season with a record of 7 wins and 13 defeats. The Monarchs suffered a heartbreaking season, with 7 of their losses coming by less than six points. The roundballers temporarily shared the spotlight of last years Cinderella team when they took surprising up-set victo- ries over Valley and Del Norte. After having felt the impact of a seven game losing streak, the victory hungry Mon- archs travelled to the Farmington Invitational Tournament in late January and won four out of five games to take third place. After dropping Valley late in the season, the Monarchs were looking for upset number three when they journeyed to the district tour- nament. They unfortunately didn't get that upset as they fell to the hands of Albuquerque High in their first game 87-64. BRUCE MARKHAM 6'3 Senior Forward The Monarchs cagers, compiling a 7-13 record this year, played better than their season record shows. Although the Monarchs were in a rebuilding year the losses suffered by the squad were by such close scores that the games could have gone either way Through-out the season the roundballers fell to defeat by such close scores as 61-60 to West Mesa, 69-65 to Espanola, while losing two tight ball games in overtime to Grand Junc- tion and Farmington. The Monarchs, not the Cinderella team of last year that Joe Waid snatches the ball from the hands of two competing Bengals, Jim Byrd lines up at the free throw line while the Manzano and Valley players tense up for the rebound. DOUG MATHSON 6'l beat Hobbs in the State tournaments, came up with some crucial upset wins over Valley 64-59 and Del Norte 57-53. The Monarchs traveled to Farmington at mid-season for the Invitational Tournaments and came home with a third place trophy after burning four out of five games while losing to Grand Junction in overtime during the semi-finals. Manzano will again be going with rebuilding season next year when they will have three returning varsity lettermen while bringing up approximately nine of this years B-teamers.
