Head Coach ROBERT NUNN This year's coaching staff for the '67-'68 basketball teams, was headed by Robert Butch Nunn who took over after the sudden resignation of prospective coach Jerry Maier. Maier, who was to head the team after last year's coach DuWayne Blackshear was forced to resign for health reasons. Coach Nunn, an assistant coach in football and an assistant last year in basketball, reluctantly accepted the advancement to head coach although the football and basketball seasons overlapped and placed him in a position of extreme pressure. Assisting Coach Nunn this year was Assistant coachesg Nick Brown, Mike Martin, Baron coach, and John Thomas, Sophomore coach B-team coach Mike Martin, a former cage star at South- eastern State College in Oklahoma and sophomore coach John Thomas who played at Arizona State. The Manzano Monarchs basketball team, starting from scratch after having all but two of last years lettermen, closed their season with a record of 7 wins and 13 defeats. The Monarchs suffered a heartbreaking season, with 7 of their losses coming by less than six points. The roundballers temporarily shared the spotlight of last years Cinderella team when they took surprising up-set victo- ries over Valley and Del Norte. After having felt the impact of a seven game losing streak, the victory hungry Mon- archs travelled to the Farmington Invitational Tournament in late January and won four out of five games to take third place. After dropping Valley late in the season, the Monarchs were looking for upset number three when they journeyed to the district tour- nament. They unfortunately didn't get that upset as they fell to the hands of Albuquerque High in their first game 87-64.
