New methods have sought to render in' dustrial training more valuahle to students hy giving them opportunity to use initia' tive. Through work on special projects, using material from reference hooks, com lwined with shop experiments, this aim has heen approached. A student working in the field of creating new and more etlicient machines finds necessary the study of practical principles ot' mechanics and the al'-ility to plan and design. This training may he ohtained in hoth meehanies and mechanical drawing classes. VV'oodwork classes offer training in the proper working of wood, in addition to the correct selection of wood. MUSIC i HE music department experienced a very successful season during 193936 under the direction of Miss McKelvey and Mr. Cardner. The year consisted of one great succession of experiments and adventures in all lines of musical exploration. Perhaps the most outstanding achievement of the year was the presentation of a light opera, joan of the Nancy Lee. This initial undertaking was possible only through the united efforts of the one hundred and seventyfsix memhers of the comhined glee cluhs and choruses with Charles McFarland and Virginia Selhy in leading roles. A great part of the success of this production was also due to the untiring efforts of Miss McKelvey, Mrs. Bennett, Miss Daly, Mr. Cardner, Mr. Pease, and M1'. Anderson, in direction and makefup. The plot of joan of the Nancy Lee was concerned with the love of Sir Richard Camden, a young English nohle, who had heen exiled from England through the treachery of his cousin, Lord Eghert. Wheii Richard learned that his sweetheart, Lady joan, had jilted him in favor of Eghert, who had acquired the Camden lands and wealth, he joined a hand of young English gentlemen in a career of piracy. The entire crew of the pirate ship, Nancy Lee, had foresworn all women hecausc they too, had heen jilted hy their sweethearts. As the story proceeded, the Nancy Lee was sailing off the coast of England when her crew captured a ship which was hearing joan and her hridesmaids hack from France. In the sequence of events, Richard was thrown in irons, through misinterpretation on the part of the crew, and joan was made captain of the ship. joan and Dick, however, hecame reconciled upon learning of the treachery of Eghert. All ended happily as the pirates ahandoned their oath to hate women and hecame the hridesmaid's suitors. During the second semester Miss McKelvey and the comhined vocal groups pre' sented a second great musical success, in the operetta, Maid of the Mill. The story of this rural operetta was concerned with the adventures of Syhil Forrester, a young girl who leased the 'lOld Mill in an effort to iind seclusion. She hoped to escape meeting Rohert Reed, a young man, who according to the plans of his late uncle, was to have proposed to her on sight or forfeit his inheritance to her. Rohert Reed, also seeking a secluded spot in the country, despite his uncle's plans, hought the Old Mill. However, he could not occupy it hecause of Syhil's tenancy. The two met under assumed names at the mill as landlord and tenant. She was a shrewd husiness woman who helieved that her nephews, Harrison Stommel and Ralph Trcntham, were trying to roh hcr, A newspaper reporter, Olive Fahringer, entered, hringing romance and inspiration to Harrison. Later a scarlet ghost seemingly murdered Aunt Hetty, hut was found to he Harrison, trying to ohtain material for a mystery novel. The truth was found through the efforts of a hick detective, Reinhold Vv'ulf. The professional detective. Malcolm Crandell, did no detecting. The rcst of the cast included Lavinia Bryan, l'auline Nelson, Dorothy England, and Bill Phehus. ln directing the second play of the year, Bernadetta Daly, employed a douhle cast, in part, hecause of the numher of students desiring to participate. Green and inexperienced, the artisans could not go places during the first round hut learned foothall with each successive start and constantly improved. Starting the second round with a high scoring victory over East, the Bricklayers, though on the short end ot' several scores, were a free scoring eleven heaten only hy West and North after four quarters ol' hard, clean tioothall. Richmond. GIRLS' THLETIC SPEEDBALL SPEEDBALL started this year with one hundred twenty girls out for the first game, with elected managers, Lucille Reeser and Eileen Bridgewater in charge. The mixed grade teams, consisting of girls from the eleventh and twelfth grades, were captained hy Dorothy Allen, Dorothy Hall, Marjorie Segerdahl, and Ruth Weir. This year for the Hrst time a second tournament was estahlished to encourage tenth grade girls. Their captains were Marie Blaue, Ethel Sager. and Mildred Dahlstrom, with Mildred Dahlstrom's team emerging champions. GOLD D'S AND BIG D'S Girls interested in speedhall, volleyhall, haskethall, and various minor sports End much to explore. Participants are divided into teams and champions crowned through elimination tourna- ments, Athletic awards are made on a point hasis: participation in a major sport earns one hundred points. a minor sport fifty. When one hundred points have heen earned a feminine athlete receives a small D and for each hundred points thereafter a chevron. Seven hundred nity points hrings a hig D and one thousand points secures the coveted gold During the tirst semester gold D's were awarded Yoshiko Ariki, llene Dilheclt, Jacqueline Morrison, Phyllis Shannon, and Elsie Von Dickersohn. Big D's were earned hy Ruth Borkman, Hazel Chin, LaVerna Chismar, Edith Davis, Consuelo jarainillo. Alma Keanmaster, Margaret Magnuson, Grace Miller, Eleanor Rydcll. Marjorie Segerdahl. Alessie Sharp and Miriam Shoflner. Second semester awards were made too late to he included in this puhlication. FACULTY Miss Louise McNifl, formerly of West High, took charge of girls' athletics during the second semester: Mrs. Bennett having developed a latent interest in English.
