Due to a down pour before and during the game, it Was played under miserable con- ditions. A wet field and a slippery pigskin resulted in many fumbles for both teams. Time after time Manual penetrated deep into War- rior territory, only to be halted by a fumbled ball. Woodruff, on the other hand, proved to be better mudders because of their weight advantage. After the mud had cleared, the score saw the Warriors winning a hard fought contest 21-O. The traditional celebration Homecoming 19 5 5, brings memories of crowded bleachers, icy fingers, and the chills and shivers that go along with the Annual Turkey Day Game. Manual students, alumnae, and friends en- joyed the most talked-up and talked-of day of the year. In fact, the general attitude Was, let it snow, who cares if we get pneumonia! Actually, Homecoming was not just a day, but a Week end, a long one for the most. The bustle of activity started long before. First, the voting for the queen, the frenzy of prepar- ing for the dance, and the thunderous cheer of the mass assembly. Vlfednesday evening brought the pep rally and the burning of the Central Lion. Thursday afternoon brought the big game followed by the dance in the Boy's Gym Where Marianne was crowned queen by her king Dick Harting and the traditional kiss was then bestowed. Win or lose, Homecoming brings vivid and pleasant memories to all, a day not soon to be forgotten. Ierry Lewis could never play it like this! ini Oh, Marianne please don't bum him! For death the pure life saves, And lite all pure is loveg and love can reach From heaven to earth, and nobler lessons teach Than those by mortals read. Well blest is he who has a dear one deadp A lriend he has whose face will never change- A dear communion that will not grow strange, The anchor of a love is death. The blessed sweetness of a loving breath Will reach our cheek all fresh through weary years For he who died long since, ah! waste not tears, He's thine unto the end Thank God for one dear friend. With face still radiant with the light of truth, Whose love comes laden with the scent of youth, Through twenty of death. ..KAY,. 3 , Niggaz: 3 A if t THE ROSE BEYOND THE WALL Near shady wall a rose once grew, Budded cmd blossomed in God's free light, Watered cmd fed by morning dew, Shedding its sweetness day and night. As it grew and blossomed fair and tall, Slowly rising to loftier height, It came to a crevice in the wall, Through which there shone a beam of light, Onward it crept with added strength, With never a thought of fear or pride, It followed the light through the crevice's length And unfolded itself on the other side. Coral Kay Lippert The light, the dew, the broadening view Were found the same as they were before And it lost itself in beauties new, Breathing its fragrance more and more. Shall claim of death cause us to grieve And make our courage faint and fall? Nay! Let us faith and hope receive - - The rose still grows beyond the wall, Scattering fragrance far and Wide Iust as it did in the days of yore, Iust as it did on the other side, Iust as it will forever more. The music was heavenly I ONES Ioyce Ann Blenz The great and sad mistake of many people, among them even pious persons, is to imagine that those whom death has taken leave us. They do not leave us. They remain!-Where are they? ln darkness? Oh, no! It is We who are in darkness. We do not see them, but they see us. Their eyes, radiant with glory, are fixed upon our eyes full of tears. Oh, infinite consolation! Though invisible to us, our dear dead are not absent. I have often reflected upon the surest comfort for those who mourn. It is this: a firm faith in the real and continual presence of our loved onesg it is the clear and penetrating conviction that death has not destroyed thern. nor carried them away. They are not even absent, but living near to us, trans- figured: having lost in their glorious change no delicacy of their souls, no ten- derness of their hearts, nor especial preference in their affection, on the con- trary, having in depth and fervor of devotion, grown larger a hundredfold. Death is, for the good, a translation into light, into power, into love.
