THE MANUALITE 1973-1974 ANNUAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF MANUAL HIGH SCHOOL 3845 McGEE STREET, KANSAS CITY, MO. FOREWORD The present time has one advantage over every other-it is our own. Charles C. Cotton Another year has now come to a close. Our yester- day is now only a collection of thoughts and valued memories. Tomorrow is only an expectation, an anticipa- tion, and a hope. Today is truly all that we can hold and call our very own. , We have spent the year capturing memories in words and pictures, so that those Manualites who dared to GET INVOLVED and play their many parts on the stages of Manual, will have something to remember, the times that they wasted or saved, the goals won or lost, the events they liked and disliked, the places and things that they will remember fondly or indifferently We hope that we have successfully captured the various parts of our past, present, and future, because the year 1973-74 at Manual High School, was a time for all Manual Cardinals to GET INVOLVED. “All yesterdays are summarized in our now, and all tomorrows are ours to shape.” Hul Borland Lowell Jones Yearbook Staff 2 1 RETROSPECT EDDIE RYAN MEMORIAL A WA RD The Eddie Ryan Memorial Award was establish- ed in honor of one of the most memorable coaches the Kansas City area has ever Known. The H.R.C. takes part in many charitable activities. We donate Christmas gifts and dinners to needy families during the holiday. Operation Penny Power was set up for Pat Bickle, a football player, for Center High School, who was seriously injured during a football game. We've also had a Swap and Shop and several bake sales. From these funds we present the faculty with a free ac- tivity and when all work is done we set aside enough to have three H.R.C. get togethers An Easter egg hunt, presented by the senior members of H.R.C. is complete with different kinds of candied eggs as well as the real ones and a prize for the one who finds the most. In an effort to provide college oriented experiences for the students of Manual, Future Teachers of America was suggested. Young people interested in attending college organized. These young people decided on the name College Bound Students as many were con- sidering college careers other than teaching. The group meets once a month for business and educational stimulus, to participate in field trips and to render service projects to the school. The sponsors of this organization are Mrs. Lillie Edwards and Mrs. Olivia Robins. 96 College Bound Students THE CARDINALS ART CLUB “Art is a human activity, con- sisting in this that one man con- sciously, by means of certain exter- nal signs, hands on to others feelings he has lived through, and other people are infected by these feelings and also experience them.” Leo Tolstoy THE ART CLUB AT WORK Art Club 97 INVOLVEMENT IS What can one man do by himself? This is the question asked and Manualites rally to the answer, Nothing . In- volvement means learning to work, live, and have fun with your fellowman. Pictured are Manualites that are in- volved. Are you there? . . . . PARTICIPATION A true Manualite does not find it difficult to become involved. The many activities, both student and faculty planned, make involvement in school life second nature to many. THE HIGH-STEPPING MAJORETTES ROW l-L to R; Helena McDaniels. Zelma Oates. Sheila Siggal. The Junior Masterpiece , as pictured here, is symbolic of our creative abilities. We are responsible for the traditional Junior-Senior Prom. Every Junior and Senior is invited to this affair; he or she may invite a date of his or her choice. It is expected that this year’s Prom will be one of the best ever given by a Junior Class. In addition to our being responsible for giving the Prom, we are also responsible for the newly created works of a talent and fashion show. Funds obtained from these adventures were used to help sponsor the Junior-Senior Prom. Other fund rais- ing activities were bake and zodiac T-shirt sales. We were successful in all of our sponsored activities. Our personality traits point to the direction of success. A good example of this are the numerous Juniors that are in- volved in extracurriculum activities; some of the activities are: cheerleading, majorettes, drillteam, tennis, track, basketball, football, hockey, band. The National Honor Society, College Bound. The 100 Girls Club, and The Human Relations Council. We. as Juniors, are looking forward to even more success in our senior year. Our activities and achievements began during the latter part of our freshman year with the election of class officers. At that time we were neophytes beginning a journey that would encompass four years. The definition of school spirit and pride was quite vague. This years' activities have helped clarify that definition. We have found through working as a unit what spirit and pride are about. We have organized and sponsored such activities as a Christmas party, a trip to Six Flags Over Mid-America and to earn money for ourselves we worked in the concession stands at the Harry S. Truman Sports Complex. Indeed our scene has changed. Our energies have not been channeled toward enjoyment entirely. We are proud to have one of the best academic records in Manual High. We have a total class membership of one-hundred fifty students thirty- one of which are honor students. Our goal is to have no less than fifty honor graduates our senior year. We, also, have outstanding sophomore participation in the athletic programs and other school sponsored organizations. We, as a class, feel we owe much of our success and new insights to our sponsor, Mr. Cleo V. Washington. We would like to thank him and let him know that the spirit of 76 will Keep on Truckin'!!
