Mr. Porter and Mrs. Vance. Mrs. Edna Vance To Mrs. Edna Vance we give thanks for being our cafeteria director ior the past four years. Mrs. Vance has been in cafe- teria work for twenty-two years. Of these she was at James School ior seventeen years: Bancroft for one year: and Manual for four years. While here at Manual Mrs. Vance made cute aprons for Service Society girls to wear while working. Also she helped in getting new cooking equipment in the kitchen. Mrs. Vance said she was sorry to leave us because she knew so many students here at Manual. Although teach- ers and students will miss her, they want to wish her happiness and success in her new position at Northeast Senior. 1 14 .- ' 5 ,. +1 rr I .Q A STUDENT LIFE Ju A ns fqwf- t bvf ' Ciuvs repoft Relaxation Top Right -- Student Photographs - Kenneth Cline r If-it -A Faculty laughter Right Center .. MANUAL SOCIETY OF DEBATE Ierry Norton Donald Noyes Frank Parcels Fred Pou Robert Simcox Dene Simpson Val Roy Smith Charles Whitteck Virgil Iones Mike Mandina Robert Martin Bill Norton In 1898 a group of boys who were interested in the promotion of high school debate. organized a society that was to become the oldest in the history oi Manual High and Vocational School. Since that time the ideas oi this society have changed somewhat but its principals are the same: those of good fellowship. good character, lair play and the ability to express themselves wisely. This society is called the Manual Society ol Debate. The M. S. D.'s have an alumni organization which is still closely associated with the active organization. Each year the Alumni Association has a banquet held always on December 26, the day after Christmas, unless this day falls on a Sunday. Among the alumni are many prominent men-men who helped model the shape of this City and who come lrom all parts of the United States and Canada. X By participating in the society's discussions a member gains confidence in his ability to express his own thoughts and ideas. The members of the Manual Society of Debate feel that it they have accomplished no more than this the Society has well repaid their efforts and given them the consolation of knowing that this society has been an inspiration to its members. The Manual Society of Debate has as its sponsor. Mr. Glen Redtord. The Society's motto is No one is wise alone. The Manual Society of Debate is the brother society of the Athena Literary Society and through the course of a year many ioint meetings are held between the two organizations. -52- MANUAL SOCIETY OF DEBATE I,L 1 flfl Carov Charles Chaney 5 . -svn. Before coming to Manual as a dressmaking teacher, and as an English teacher, she was superintendent of the home economics department at the Missouri State Fair. She taught at the lane Hayes Gates lnstitute many years. Mrs. Nelle Eckles 1-ler appreciation for the art of fine needlework, selection of harmonizing colors, and critical technic made her clothing classes attractive to many girls. We pupils admire her wit, wisdom and laughter among our daily lessons in the Classroom. For her wonderful philosophy of life, Mrs. Eckles will long be re- membered in many homes in Kansas City. To Mrs. Eckles, from your pupils, clothing classes, English classes, and study halls. Mrs. Ida Deal Mrs. lda Deal has been with the young people at Manual since 1931. She was matron until 1942 when she was promoted to as- sistant custodian. She was glad to stay at Manual to help because she has always wanted to be of service and has loved people. Forty-two years ago when quite a young mother of two babies, she was sole custodian of Francis Willard School. This duty gave her full charge of the heating plant and the cleanliness of the school. lt was this obligation met faithfully that instilled in her great unbounding love for children and young people. This has been Mrs. Deal's last year at Manual. She says, 1 have always been happy here. Mrs. Deal, accept this note of our appreciation of what you have done to make our school a good school and a clean school. We will miss you. .-QU.. I I I -- - - - . V A. - pushy.. 1 . Top Lett - Optical Machine Operator Top right -- Grocery Clerk Center - Food Service Bottom Left - Machine Accounting Bottom Right - Auto Mechanics -IOD- COOPERATIVE OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION Education is a continuing experience. lt does not end with graduation from school. The education on the job is very real and it is entirely different. Pupils enrolled in the C.O.E. program concern themselves with such problems as: getting a- long on the job, making progress on the job and methods to obtain better jobs. They have advantages over the regular high school pupils because they discuss these practical problems While they are attending school. Many seniors who finish high school are faced with the problem of finding their first job. They are unfamiliar with business and industry and they do not know the names of the jobs for which they are qualified. The pupils enrolled in C.O.E. continue Working full-time with the company Where they have been employed. The C.O.E. program has been organized to give work experiences to pupils who desire them before they graduate from high school. It is a cooperative program because the employers and the coordinator work together to enable the pupil to obtain as many experiences as he can. This practical on-the-job training program cannot be obtained in the regular high school courses. . The C.O.E. program is elective for juniors and seniors Who are over sixteen years of age. These pupils may graduate at the same time as the other members of their class if they will elect their required subjects carefully. One unit per year is given for C.O.E. Work and one unit for C.O.E. class. I . I 1: Ttjyxv ffl ,' 4 Q! r ' Q Ill!!! ,ij if! LEAGUE GAMES MANUAL 37 SOUTHEAST 67 The Manual Cardinals opened the ln- terscholastic League on january 7, by losing to the tall Southeast Knights. The small Redbirds gave Southeast a good battle the first half, but the last half the Cards just couldn't keep the pace. MANUAL 27 WESTPORT 66 Westport, Tiger's pressing defense held the Cardinals down the last half, and left Manual at the intermission time behind 7 points. The Tigers then Went on to build their lead. MANUAL 47 PASEO 54 Manual's Red and White played an exciting game against the Paseo Pi- rates. Both teams seemed evenly matched as the Red and White took an early lead in the first quarter l3 to 8. But Paseo then took the lead and the Redbirds tried hard to come back into the game when they were behind just 2 points with 4 minutes left in the last quarter. MANUAL 36 CENTRAL 38 Manual Redbirds lost a close ball game to the Central Eagles. Each team was never ahead by much of a score. As the teams traded points, Central held a one-point lead. The game was a thriller right down to the buzzer. MANUAL 43 NORTHEAST 55 ln the fifth game of the season Man- ual improved their ball playing While losing to the Northeast Vikings by l2 points. Northeast controlled the back- boards most of the time and the Red- birds just couldn't grab the majority of them. MANUAL 41 EAST 66 Manual's Red and White just could not stop the red hot East Bears as the Bears were small but really showed Cards were never close at all. The Bears were small but really showed what a small team can do when they are hot. MANUAL 45 SOUTHWEST 55 The last game of the season was played on February l9. Manual put up a strong fight but just didn't quite make it.
