It takes more than just a few days of mining. It takes four long years of unremitting effort. Some of us fell out along the way as in every group of explorers. Many attained their goal while the rest kept searching on. Taking many different courses, we strove to reach our destination. In the end we all met, only to depart again and pursue our different ways. We hope some of us set patterns for the younger generation to come, such as building a stronger nation by our knowledge for peace, for per- sonal respect, for authority. We, the modern '49ers, while looking back upon yester years realize how much we have gained by the patterns of those who went be- fore us. We do hope that we have left a bit of improvement for those to come. ln leaving the halls of Manual High and Vocational School we set out for a new goal, to attain the pursuit of happiness, success, and achievement. Yes! we the seniors of today, go forth with great determination to explore the world to come. We hope you, the future seniors of tomorrow enjoy Manual as much as we have. i l W llhtfd W Page 3 Builder Staff STAFF POSITIONS Editor-in-Chief . . . Shirley White Business Manager . . Sponsors The graduating class of 1949 leaves Manual with high ambitions, many honors, and with one wish to make a success. To our sponsors, Mrs. Nellie Eckles, arid Elbert Shores goes our deepest appreciation for their counsel and guidance throughout our four years at Manual. In our freshman year we were noted for our fine turn-outs at the mixers our class sponsored. In our Sophomore year we were known for our fine speakers. This continued through our years at Manual. Our Junior year sponsored the lovely Junior and Senior Prom. Next of all important happenings, was the measuring of Senior rings. The Senior year came with a flood of many events. First We spon- sored a Senior mixer, which turned out to everyone's satisfaction. Time passed on to the ordering of announcements for the longed-for-commence ment. National Honor Society found us all waiting for the thrill of white dresses and dark suits. Senior Class Day was a huge success with every senior wondering what it's going to be like on the outside. And last but not least Commencement. FAREWELL MANUAL Page 11 Aqmrz e Eva Allgaier 6 r ., ...i. , 1. I, Donald Williams, leave my crew cutl' to those boys of the junior class. I, Edwin Williams, leave my fabu- lous art ability to the on-coming Com- mercial Art Class. I, Merriam Wilson, leave my superb ability of getting that office the lady- like way to the next senior president, may she do as well as I. I, Shirley Wilson, most sought after Date Bait, leave my talent to Eliza- beth Moore. I, Betty Wright, leave my winning smile to the Junior Class. I, Jeanette Wright, will my spark- ling eyes, and smooth talk to Slyvia Rogers. Page 28 Ten Years Hence June, 1959 Dear Mr. Schmoor I am writing to you in answer to your questions about various peo- ple in that old class of 1949. Harriet Spears and Donald Bradely are the very capable managers of the Associated Press. Of course you know Rollie Baldwin and Reubon Montoya are run- ning for Senators from Missouri, and most probably will win, so the polls think. Tom Zapien is coaching that wonderful football team Cleveland Browns, some of the All-American players are, Adrain Bush, Mickey McGuire and Frank Spellman. The 4-star generals in line for a promotion to 5-star generals are: Stanley Parks, Ernest Johns, Johnny Perparas and Charles Poe. Have you seen the greatest musical on Broadway with those great singers: Carmen Obergon, Eugene Tollefson and Leroy Stock? They're sure to make the Hall of Fame. Oh yes! that very popular nature boy Bruce lVIcCurley Cwhose 5 o'clock shadow has grown to 10 o'clockJ is still wowing those cute art- ists Charlene Capps and Dolores Williams. And you remember Joe Green, one of the best printers in high school. He now owns the largest printing shop in Kansas City, a very profitable and successful organization. The Head Models for Lower Modeling Agency are: Betty Lou Wright, Evelyn Hills, Sadie Rhoads and Catherine Troya. Ruby Sharp, that speedy typist and fast acting shorthand taker, is now private secretary to J. L. Robinson's Electrical Work Shop. Both are doing very well in their business careers. Bob Mitchum is now the main chemical engineer of the Seabees. Tom Guthery is working for a college as head chemestry teacher and is doing quite well I hear. Other teachers in practice are: Helen Richards, Betty Kennedy, Anna Mae Giarimita, Mary Lemos, Martha Sirratt and Bill Neely. Page 29 Well dear Mr. Schmoo this just about takes care of the class of nineteen hundred forty-nine, of course I've lost contact with several of the men and women at Manual. Some have risen to great heights, while a few have stayed at the bottom. But never let it be said that they didn't have an equal chance to make good when entering and leaving Man- ual. They had an excellent oppurtunity for success, but some failed to grasp it. Most of the teachers at Manual have the satisfaction of knowing these ex-students retained their teachings for making better men and women. When they read this it will give them a feeling of successful teach- ing, seeing the progress they are still making and success others have al- ready made. I know they will be glad they spent that little time each day, laborously toiling to teach us those important neccessities of life, and I can assure you the successful people can say with deep gratitude- Thanks for a job well done. What? Oh where's the Builder staff of '49, didn't you know? They're still here at Manual trying to finish that supe-rb annual. There is Pauline Richards, who'll some day finish that chemistry and be a great teacher of chemistry, and Merriam Wilson and Bob Quattlebaum, who might finish Human Relations to enter very good jobs in that line, and Gene Schmutzer and Adrian Bush who are still playing up to the girls and making them feel good. Then there's Pat Evans studying the dictionary, someday she will learn to spell, I know, and dear Frances Ventimiglia, goodness she's almost gray. I do hope someday Frances, your books will equal themselves correctly. Oh well you can always blame petty cash can't you? And Shirley White really thinks that the annual will come through, but she still is wondering why the copy is never right or isn't even in yet. But all of them are a wonderful group of people who will make a successful stab at the world if they try as they have been doing. Yours affectionately, Jane Lathrop, Manual Page 30 AUTOGRAPHS Z2 Gfrfs feff Hweir Kniffmg, boys ezr Jobs af the apo1shecaries , , 'A 1 ' .ax - , fin 4,-ggv -ff ' 'N . , x . ,.. x -' XR ,r - .. ,.,. : t. Our 1948 track team, led by Danny Briscoe, Saturnino Zapien, Gil- bert Obregon, and Irvin Minor participated in the Big 7 indoor track meet, the K U. relays and the state meet held at Colwmbia, Missouri. In the Big Seven meet Briscoe won the quarter mile and finished second in the 60-yard dash. Our relay team placed fourth in this meet. We defeated Center High School in the first meet of the year. Each year more boys are out for track and Mr. Shores thinks that in the future the boys will be able to hold their own among' the other schools. He is not Worried about speed on the track team but about the development of field men who require more training than the run- ners. Our Service Society is an auxiliary of the Student Council. The Service Society, composed of some seventy-five members, helps in the cafeteria, the office, the recreation periods, and assists the teachers whenever possible. Our very capable sponsors, C. H. Mathis and Miss Helen McDonna attend the meetings to express the views of the faculty as Well as help with all of the activities of the council. Some of the social ac- tivities of the Student Council are the Snow Hop, the Spring Picnic, at Fairyland Park, and the Christmas Party. Three members of our Student Council attend the All-City Student Council meetings at which problems of mutual interest are discussed. The Service Society is an organization composed of students both elected and selected by their fellow students and the faculty to serve the school by voluntary work in many fields. The cafeteria, the office, the counselor's office, the library, and the health center are some of the de- partments served. It has long been a principal of Manual High and Vocational School that students be allowed to exercise self-control and respect for the rights of others, and not be regimented, if they are to develop these traits. It is the belief that good citizenship may develop through self-government and self-control. By means of the Service Society, students are given this oppor- tunity for self discipline. Working in this organization often means a sacrifice of personal time and leisure on the part of members. The privilege of wearing the heart- shaped shield pin and being an important part of this heart of our school is Well worth the time and effort spent. The creed of the society is: We believe in the loyalitv and good fellowship of the student body of Manual High and Vocational School. We believe the students desire to be courteous and trustworthy, and want to uphold the high ideals and undaunted spirit which students in former years have passed on to us, which we covet at the present time. For Manual, I will serve to the utmost of my ability. Page 80 Craftsman ROW 1. J. Dearman, P. Miles, L. Burden, D. Seaman, M. Daniels, C. Vigliatura, P. Triano, J. Baum, D. Bullock, M. VValtei's, M. Staff members, teachers, and students work together to try to provide adequate publicity for all departments of Manual. After each issue is printed, newswriters list the number of inches of copy each teacher hasg they plan to include in the coming issue, news about those low in in publicity. Room 205 has charge of advertising, besides Writing news for Pages 3 and 4. Advertising managers must procure ads, make up and send lavouts for each issue to the printshop, and change ads as ordered by the adver- tiser. Advertisements help finance Craftsman expenses. Since January 1, 1945 through June 30, 1948, the American Junior Red Cross has shipped 1,668,259 gift boxes to 28 countries. These boxes, conservatively valued at 52.00 each, represented the shipment of 83,336,- 518 Worth of valuable educational and health material. The will and moral value can not be estimated. It is such a Worthy cause and we are so glad that our school can have a little part in this great program. Mrs. Nelle Eckles of the Homemaking Department made layettes, pencil cases, boys from left-over scraps, toys, needle cases, and Weaving squares for afghans of wool yarn for Red Cross.
