NAIUT ILUS of 9335 Compiled and Edited by the Students of MANUAL TRAINING HIGH SCHOOL 0 Q o Editor-in-Clriwf GLEN SHAFFIYR Assoriutv Editor DOROTHEA OZAR Scnior Editor MARGARET BUTLER Svuior Editor HAZIZI. JOHNSON At1l'l'ffIXil1xQ Mgr. JACK MABEL THE NAlU'lFlIlLlUS T certainly is a splendid thing for all of us that Hforever and ever things are truly interesting and help- ful. We boys and girls everywhere are constantly busy thinking of different, better and newer ways of doing, making and accomplishing things, so quite naturally only the best is saved while the useless and ugly are discarded. So it is with this book. We have endeavored to make it a storehouse for the gayest and most worthwhile forever and ever things of your life. Be sure, then, to preserve the memories that you want to keep always. We have written and pictured, therefore, more of fun than of fool- ishness, of ideals than fancies, and more of visions than dreams, so that when you turn inquiringly to those pages to relieve all the happy old times, or when other eager hearts want to share them with you, the pleasant pathways will offer nothing but gladness. We are hoping this book will bring the greatest joy to you and may it be a perpetual reminder of youth and its happy season, Then with treasure laden LCV.: sail away Forever and ever And even a day. Only fifteen per cent of the senior class are eligible for membership to this national organization. The requisites are very high for admittance and one must be superior in scholarship, character, service, and leadership. This year Nina Underwood ranked first and Clem Fairchild second. The candidates are selected by a committee of teachers and are then voted upon by the whole school faculty. Adviser The Health Council w'as first organized in 1934 for the purpose of helping the Manual students to work and study for the improvement of health throughout our school and community. This group has aimed to inspire all students to keep their bodies and minds in a healthy state. A representative and alternate to this council are elected in each Home Room. Both of these are expected to attend every meeting that they possibly can attend. All teachers are invited and at every meeting several are present. The meetings are held after school bi-monthly. The Council has ofticers who arrange the program with assis- tance of our most capable advisers. At the meetings there are either outside speakers or student speakers. The topics are chosen according to existing needs and interests. Several trips have been made. During the study of the Conservation of Eyesight, the Council visited the Kansas City Power and Light Company. At another time they took advantage of an opportunity to study the work done in the Campbell-Sheftield Dairy. Enthusiastic advisers have been factors in making this Council, which was made possible through the assistance of F. S. Lamar, Miss Elizabeth Scott, and Miss Ruth Hawkins, a success. Other faculty members who have assisted the organization this year are: Miss Ethel Nagle, john McMurphy, .-X. F. Barry, Maynor D. Brock, Miss Anna Hughes, and Dr. Helen Perkins. It has for its motto, No one is wise alone, and its colors blue and white, symbolizing loyalty and purity. are truly representative of the members. The Athena emblem, the white rose, symbolizes the sweet purity of girlhood. An Athena girl must have purity, loyalty, honesty, and wisdom. This year the Athenas are especially proud of the original talent which has been developed in their programs. Clever originality was displayed in stories, essays, ora- tions, poems, and extempts. Another outstanding feature was the original continued story, How a Lordship Was Restored. The Athenas also enjoyed a lovely party given for them by the Manual Society of Debate. Other outstanding and beautiful events were the Initiation, Installation of Ofticers, and the Senior Farewell. 1 m'ty-7'I1r1'f' ' 1935 ' NAUTILUS 1l3l'.N 11DN1.-KN 1111111111111 5O1C,1l.1H 'V111' 111111 .X1:111s IZ.-1111111111-. .l111-1'111i111-111111- l'1l1- I1'X11g1-1113 l..1n1'1111-1- 1,11.11.1. Barry The Hamiltonian Literary Society was organized in 1925 for the object of the mutual development of the social, moral. and educational culture of its members. An M average is necessary to gain entrance to this society. lts members are all of a high scholastic standing, and they are among the leaders of the school, This society is the only one of its kind in the Kansas City public schools, as all the members are of Jewish faith. Under the able supervision of its advisers, Miss Elizabeth Pugh and Mr. Angus F. Barry, the Hamiltonian Literary Society has passed through a successful and eventful year. The Annual Faculty Tea held March 14, was one of the greatest successes the faculty ever attended, and proved to be one of the most outstanding events of the year. A short and entertaining program was presented. The Hamiltonians entered the Aleph Zadik Aleph city-wide cultural contest, held at the Community Center, 1600 Linwood Blvd., May 5. The participants were Victor Lerner and jack Mabel, lleclamations: Phineas Dreiseszun, Poetry: and Frank Schlozman, Oration. tThis contest is taking place as this book is going to pressg therefore, it is unfortunate that the winners cannot he announced.j The annual Han1p picnic held at Swope Park, May 20, was an enjoyable occasion. l 1H'f1l'1 ll'1' 1' 1935 NAUTILUS ,X11.1XNL..111. 11111111 SUL1.1u11 'I'111'1l1I1Y' X11111111 11111111-1 .111111:.X1.1::111.N11111.111.11.1111s 1I.1z11.l111111s-111, X.11111111I.111,'1'1-111 'I'1111.1, II11'1 111.-sIi1-I11, II:1:1111-1I111'11-111 X11111111S-1111 X1111.1 I111u.111. Bliss Bury The Burytonian Literary Club originated in 1930 under the helpful guidance of our friend and teacher. Bliss Hannah Bury. Its purpose is to promote interest in literature and to arouse a friendly social feeling among classmates. The Burytonians of 1934-35 presented three plays: To Dust Returnstf' tCreated of dust, to dust we return.l The Knife is a play based on the significant part a knife played during one of the greatest crises of George Washingtons life. Driving the Snakes Out of tlrelandj Ourlandf' Lige Saint Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, we, the student body, under the guidance of a forceful leader, can drive the snakes out of our land. This class also revived the International Friendship Circle through which adolescent America may become intimate with adolescent England through personal corre- spondence. Probably one of the best programs of the year was our travel program in which we visited half of the United States through interesting accounts of our fellow-classmates. The most valuable possession of the club is 'Seeds of Literature, a semi-annual book in which the most prized poems, stories, essays, etc., are kept. Some of the outstanding Burytonians of the year are: Jacqueline Bayan, l'Best Girl Student on the Junior Ballot, and Billy Petty, Best Boy Student on the junior Ballot. These two Burytonians and also Elizabeth Grunden were selected on the Nautilus Staff this year. The requirement to enter this club is to be a second-year shorthand student. The meetings were held bi-weekly and the book entitled The Girl Today: The Woman Tomorrow was reviewed by various members of the organization. .-Xt other meetings, the use of ofbce machines was discussed so as to acquaint the students with modern business methods. An outstanding event of the year was a brief-form contest between the second-hour shorthand class and the sixth. An annual celebration was a picnic on May 8. held at Swope Park and Miss Frances Sexton was the guest. This club has also done much to promote a friendly spirit and altogether the year p'oved one of accomplishment. Advisers This organization, open to all classes, has for its purpose, the developing of high ideals and social ethics and the promoting of a friendly spirit. Their slogan is, i'To hnd and give the best, while their motto is. To face life squarely. Girl Reserves' activities this year began with a joyous fun-making Welcome Party to which all, newcomers particularly, were invited. Following an inter-school confer- ence on l'Family Relations and Friends, at which Mrs. William Morgan of Iowa City was the leader of discussion, speakers were invited to the meetings to further discuss the same subject, Social Ethics also furnished a topic for a few meetings which cul- minated in a tea at which the members made use of their newly acquired knowledge. An interesting visit to the Mercy Hospital was followed by the making of egg dolls which were given to children at the Hospital. A most valuable event, especially to the seniors, was an all-day Vocational Conference. The Boys' Hi-Y and Girl Reserves had a very successful George Washington Party at the Y. W. C. A. and a gala picnic at Swope Park. The years events ended with a beautiful impressive installation of ofiicers and senior farewell. This year the Manual A Cappella Choir, under the capable direction of M ss Violet Clausen, has accomplished more than any other class in several years. The year was started off by the making of a recording, which brought many compliments when compared with other schools. In October this was followed by the first assembly pro- gram of the music department. A group of the more difficult A Cappella songs were sung and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The next assembly was an impressive and solemn Christmas program, which held everyone spellbound. The Choir, clad in black and white robes, marched down the aisles to the melodious strains of 'AO Come All Ye Faithful, and the stage on which they sang was set like a large cathedral with a rose window in the background. At Manual's epoch making Homecoming, a selected group of boys and girls sang Christmas carols as they strolled down the halls. On Friday, preceding Christmas they gave a broadcast of Christmas numbers over WDAF, the Kansas City Star. Following this program came the HSouthwestern Solo Conference which took Mamie Davis and Serena Tabolsky to Springheld, where they spent two days, chap- eroned by Miss Clausen. Next came the Spring Concert at which sacred Easter songs were sung. The quartet, triple trio, and several soloists also performed on the program. On April 15, the Choir was again honored by being allowed to sing over WDAF. Manual can truly be proud of her A Cappella Choir this year, as every music-loving Manualite knows. This Choir has prepared our students not only to love but to really appreciate good music. They all appreciate the efforts of their beloved director, Miss Clausen, and extend heartfelt thanks to her. With the help of the managers of sports, the M Club has led the Physical Education Department in all the sports of the year. The meetings have been held regularly on every other Friday. The programs have been arranged by Elsie Dannenberg, the Vice-Presiclent. who planned one meeting to be held in the gym, and a game afterward: and the other meeting in a room with a program by the talented members of the club. The most outstanding events of the year were: the basketball game which was played as a final of all the games played this year. There was an attendance of about four hundred. A banquet which was given by the club in honor of the girls who played in after-school basketball. The Mothers' and Daughters' Tea which was given in january, and which was attended by the mothers of the girls in the club. A few of the members of the faculty were there, acting in the capacity of mothers. All in the spirit of the club, the mothers played ping-pong, shuffle-board, aero-dart, and tenne- quoit. Tea, which was served in the dining room, was accompanied by a program. The Girls' M Club and the Boys M Club united once again to go on their annual picnic that is held in the clubs every year. CIRCUS The thirteenth annual R. O. T. C. Circus was held in Convention Hall, April IZ, 1935. All city High Schools were present with bands and drum and bugle Corps, Manuals unit of about hfty especially chosen cadets presented a calisthenics and riHe drill. All Manual officers also took part in the drill. They were clad in undershirts and were armed with rifles. They also did the Lentz Cadence Drill in honor of the man who originated it, as he was the guest of honor. The absence of the usual Sponsors did not decrease the interest of those who at- tended the Circus. The Girls' Tiger Vocal Band from Westport supplied the feminine interest this year. Most interesting of all the drills was the Shattuck School Incorporated Zouave Drill, which is an unusual and interesting presentation which was considered the best in last year's Circus. All movements are executed in half-step marchg their only com- mand being Hyp! FIELD DAY Our R. O. T. C. this year did well in their field meet which is an annual affair. They won second place cup in Company Inspection and the same honor in Corps Inspection. Sirty-Three ' 1935 ' NAUTILUS MIAN UAIJS HUlMIllCCCUlMIllNiG One night this year Manual was the scene of the greatest reunion the city has ever known. Hundreds of handsome men and women. once carefree students. milled through the halls of our loved building, now mellow with the memories of years. They packed every room talking excitedly. reliving happy hottrs. or trying in vain to recall forgotten nantes, lt was on September. 1807. that Manual first opened her venerable doors to eager students. She was the first school in the city to combine manual training with the general high school curriculum. and boys and girls tlocked to her classes in great numbers. It was Mr. Phillips. now chairman of the English llepartment of Northeast High School. who was responsible for the establishment of Manual Training High School, and he too was present on that night to greet the many successful men and women who had once. as students. revered him. As these people roamed our familiar halls the years fell back. and emotion rose in their hearts. They conyersed with teachers who had made it possible for them to step out into the busy world and tind their places. There was Miss Della Ilrake. who had opened to them the nobilities of Caesar. and the beauties of Virgil: there was Mr, I'. B. S. lleters. who had drilled them in the mysteries of law, and Mr. Peterson who had made history live for them. There. too, was gentle. kindly Mr. Kent who has now passed into the fuller life beyond. leaving behind him as the signs of his gift to the world, living monuments of lives shaped at his hands. Mr. Lamar. once teacher of Physics. and now llrincipal of Manual. talked in his kindly manner to former students and teachers. and Miss Scott. always a friend to boys and girls, beamed with happiness. Graduates of recent years. still young and blooming, were here too. mingling their bright heads with the gray ones. and present students marched through the halls in a procession singing Christmas carols, For many hours they talked and sang. to depart at last with full hearts and refreshed minds. The ques- tion for debate was: Resolved, that the United States should adopt the system of giving annual grants, to the several states, for the support of public, elementary and secondary education. The Paseoxdebate was held before the Paseo assembly, February 1. Our team also debated before several Central classes. Other debates were after school hours. There was no decision on any debates. Clem Fairchild represented Manual, at Southwest, in the Kansas City Division of the State Oratorical Contest, sponsored by the American Legion. His subject was The Constitution and the New Deal. Laura Belle Weant and Lee Collins represented Manual in the National Oratorical Contest, sponsored by the National Housing Homes for Young America and Lee Collins spoke on The Scope of the National Housing. Laury: Elmer Tyndall, Gerald Hefley, Frank Agrusa-backs, and Frank DiGiovanni, Ralph Benizio+linemen. 0 Our season opened with a well earned 9-O victory over the alumni. A safety scored by our second team which started the game and a drive climaxed with a pass, Tyndall to Atherton, brought home the bacon. Alex Nigro was Hleft out in the cold. It began raining after the first half and the game was called before he could get in. On September 29, we defeated William Chrisman 13-7, the first time we were vic- torious over them since the series began in 1927. There was a muddy field and our heavier line simply had things their way. In our league debut October 6, our wild passing proved fatal, and we were downed 27-0 by the later crowned Champs, Northeast Vikings. The following week we again tied our old rival Central for the second consecutive year 6-6. Last year we played a scoreless tie. They scored first when jay Keys, clever Blue Eagle back, broke away, but we came right back with an 80-yard drive, led by Frank Agrusa to tie the game. Ralph Benizio led our team on defense getting eight tackles. Against Westport, a strong wind proved to be our Waterloo. It caught one of our punts, blowing back across our goal line, with Gorham, Tiger tackle falling on it, giving them a 6-0 victory. In our next game those small but mighty Southwest Indians outgamed us and we were defeated 22-13. Next we met Liberty on another muddy field, but the Blue Jays were too determined and we came out on the short end. Jack Northrup converted for us on a long pass late in the game. What a stand our team made on our one foot line but Paseo came out in the lead with a 20-6 score. Failing to take advantage of an early East fumble and with our defense cracking, we were downed 19-O by a smooth functioning Bear team. Although not winning a league game last season our team showed a scoring punch. They made more touchdowns than any Manual team since 1927. The loss of two promising backfield men, Norbey Overton and Harold Lunn early in the season due to severe injuries, in addition to a continual string of severe minor injuries to various first string members, and also a large number of inexperienced players, all combined to destroy whatever chances we might have had for a fairly successful season. Coming back next year, we'll be placing our hopes on a light, fast, team. Six letter- men will return: Pete Tarantino, john Maggio, joe Cirrincione, Eddie Brown, and Tommy Tressler, linemeng and Harold Lunn, backfield. Second team lettermen re- turning are: Donovan Easter, Leonard Fergus, Paul Zuff, Delbert Overton, Eugene DiBella, Vito Belfonte, Vincent Agruso, Carlo Cavaleri, Donald Drinkard, Marcel Unrein, and Harry Martin. This team won all of their outside games and four of their six league contests to place second to Northeast, State and League Champions. Three lettermen reported to Coach john W. Laury at the start of the season: Lester Shartzer, joe Cirrincione and Elmer Tyndall. Our season opened with two games against the alumni, both resulting in victories. The first by a score of 42-30 and the second, a harder contested affair on Homecom- ing night fDec. 201, 27-22. On December 29, we took Leavenworth into camp 26-25 by a last minute free throw by Shartzer. Beginning the New Year right we downed unbeaten Excelsior Springs 29-22 on january 4. Next on the list came De La Salle whom we defeated 30-20. With five straight victories in our bonnet, we made our League debut against North- east's powerful Vikings january 11. Here, our team handicapped by injuries and illness, were never themselves and were beaten 29-11. Only once, immediately follow- ing the half did they appear to get started, when they were within four points of the later crowned State Champions. The following week, we routed our old enemy, Central 25-8 in a wild game and our confidence returned. We followed this with two close, hard-earned victories over Westport 22-20 and Southwest 19-18. In both of these games Shartzer made the deciding basket to bring victory. Against Paseo, who later defeated Northeast to gain a tie for the championship, Cirrincione and Shartzer were held to one point each and we were nosed out 15-11. Ernie Jones and Eugene Leach did the scoring in this game. In concluding the season with a 36-19 victory over East's Bears, we set three Inter- scholastic League records for the season. Cirrincione made a record of scoring seven field goals in one game, Shartzer set an individual scoring mark of 16 points in a game, while the team set a high mark of 36 points in one game. f'Pee Weel' was also leading scorer of the league for the season, making a total of 59 points. At the close of the season Shartzer was chosen forward and co-captain of the Inter- scholastic All-Star Team while Cirrincione was placed at guard. The 1934-35 team deserves credit for giving Manual one of the most successful and best of all time teams in the history of the school. The fine spirit that prevailed among the boys on the team, strict adherence to training rules, coolness and resource- fulness under pressure all contributed to their success. They were a smooth-working, hard-fighting quintet that knew their business every minute of the game. Forming a nucleus for next year's team we will have: Joe Cirrincioneg Carlo Cav- aleri, letterman back for half season: Leonard Fergus and Lawrence Licata, second team lettermen eligible for half season: and Delbert Overton, Donovan Easter, Tommy Tressler, Paul Zugg, Eugene DiBella, Jimmy Stewart and Earl Plaskett, second team lettermen back all season. Both Giant and Regular Volleyball tournaments were played after school. The tournaments were conducted on an elimination basis. Goldie Studna, manager of regular volleyball, led the group with much skill and the games proved to be very successful. Some of the most out- standing girls who played were: Goldie Studna, Mary Benizio, Elsie Dannenberg, Mary Ann Goforth, Helen Woodard, Virginia King, Vera Lee Bosley, Lillie Fulton, Edith Studna, Rose Sapitsky, and Frances Kenney. Mary Benizio certainly is desir- able for any team as she carries a Wwallopn that wins the game. That is why she is manager of Giant Volleyball. The girls who come out for after school athletics are working on a school letter which is awarded to those who work for extra credit in the Physical Education De- p21I'U'l1E'I1l. Giant Volleyball is played before Regular Volleyball. The games are very different in rules: therefore, they are regarded as two separate games.
