Wrestling: Always on Top of Everything. The 1972-73 wrestling team completed a most successful season by finishing SECOND in their league with a record of five wins against only two setbacks The Dons began the season on a sour note when they were soundly beaten by Sante Fe high school This was a blessing in disguise for the team vowed never to repeat such a performance and began to tram and behave like a team Hard work payed off The team commenced to win Five straight matches thereafter The team emerged as one of respectability The highlight of the season was when the Dons were matched with previously unbeaten California high The team was not awed by Cals record at all and responded by throwing them by a score of 37-1 7 The success of the team can be attributed to the fine group of young men that made up the team These young men were not only outstanding athletes but good students as well Coach Tomei acknowledges the fact that this IS the finest group of young men he has been associated since coming to Dominguez Three year lettermen include seniors Robert Jones. Steve Sugita. and Jerry Hawkins All three posted undefeated records during league competition Tough veteran Robert Jones, wrestled his way to the 168 lbs championship Robert also beat five out of SIX opponents in the CIF prelims and advanced to the CIF finals Jerry Hawkins and Derek Young were other Dons that made it into CIF competition In addition to these names, the team was blessed with other outstanding men They are Steven Juarez, a sophomore in his first year became one of the top men in his weight class. Arthur Durate. a seinor who is of CIF caliber. Donald Hill, a tough Junior who will be worth watching next year, Ira Johnson, a first year senior who ended up as the third best man m the league in his weight class, and big and likable Tone Pule, the Dons ' heavyweight who lost only once during league competition Tone is only a junior and he will be the man to beat in the heavyweight class next year.
