The 1973 season started for the varsity in August on Wilson Field, and, before it was over, some unusual things hap- pened. There were, as always, winners and losers. It was often difficult, how- ever, to determine who was what. .The old Manual teams seemed to be no more. Teams that used to stand up against the great Manual varsity teams of the past suddenly turned it all around. - The Toiler team opened their regular season against Centennial. Tailback Bernard Harris had his best day as a football player as he danced for 124 yards that night. Yet with all that going for them, the Toilers lost their opener 12 to O. Coming to San Fernando the following week, it was the same thing. They were hitting hard, but it just wasn't enough. The Toilers also lost to the Tigers 21 to O. Looking for victory, they challenged Carson City in their final pre-season game. The Toilers played poorly, and Carson took advantage of it. The Colts swarmed by Manual 53 to O. Hitting league play with determina- tion, the Toilers went to Washington High. Tight end Richard McNair had it great that day as he caught passes for 138 yards. That wasn't the only thing that happened that day. Quarterback Tommie Douglass put the first Toiler touchdown on the board on a one-yard run. However, the Toilers fell to the Generals 21 to 14. .'B mm-new-0 Homecoming found the Toilers facing the Dorsey Dons with high spirits in one of the most exciting games of the year. With the queen and courts and crowded stands looking upon the gridi- ron, the Toilers fell in defeat in a hard-hitting game defensively. Offen- sively they scored only 6 points, but they still gave the crowd a stand-up kind of game. With a tenth grade half- back starting for the Toilers, the rush- ing game was ideal, as Maxie Hamilton, who filled in beautifully for injured Bernard Harris, scampered for 123 yards. The only score for the Toilers came on a seven-yard pass from Marcus Williams to Gregory Taylor, who made a great catch in the corner of the end zone. The Toilers, however, lost the game to the Dons 38 to 6. The rest of the league games also ended in defeat for the Toilers. All that remained to be said about the 1973 season was that the Toilers were a very young team -- a promising team for the future. Tl 0077-M, Head Coach Willie Crittendon Asst. Coach Don Threatt I. Terry Bemore fthe Hawk, holds up ball and prepares to deal on defensive man from Fremont. The 1974 Manual Basketball team had its best season since 1968. fThat was the year that Manual took city.j This year, Coach Lionel Harris led his Purple Gang to a 19-4 record and a play-off berth. The Purple Gang began the Christmas Tournament at Alhambra High School. The Toilers swept all four games to win the tournament championship. They also had great success in winning yet another championship in the Eagle Rock Christmas Tournament held at Eagle Rock High School. The Purple Gang defeated Huntington Park by a score of 107-48. In the semi-finals they defeated Roosevelt by a score of 101-66. In the championship finals the Toilers had no problem in de- feating University for the second straight time by the score of 75-58 to win the Eagle Rock Championship. Pre-Season began with the Toilers facing University for the third time, and for the third time Manual increased their winning record. The following Friday, january 11, the Toilers faced Hamilton, but still the mighty Toilers were yet to meet their match. The final score was very deceiving, Manual 93, Hamilton 81. Then came the time everyone was waiting for. Coach Harris was out to prove to everyone that his team was number one in the city. The critics felt that Manual was yet to face any of the city's top teams. The Southern League was the tough- est league in the entire city. Four of the six teams in Southern League were in the city ratings. The league opener was against the Washington Generals, with Manual winning it with ease by a score of 91-79. The next un.for'u'-ate team to meet the Purple C-ang were the L.A. Romans. It wasn't much of a struggle after the first half when the Toilers broke it open. Harris and his gang overtook Rome 85-72. The next game was thought to be the toughest game for the Toilers in league play. They were to face the Pathfinders of Fremont. The winner of the Manual Arts - Fremont game was likely to take the number one spot in the city. The Pathfinders were a strong and aggressive team, who dominated the offensive boards, but thanks to Coach Harris' training camp, the Toilers proved to be the better conditioned team. Because of this the Toilers were able to overtake the aggressive Pathfinders late in the fourth period. The final score was 63-57. Next, Manual faced the Dorsey Dons, who were thought to be a pushover for the Toilers. The Dons handed Manual its first defeat. Manual was cited for 43 turnovers in the game. The Dons defeated Manual 55-59. The Toilers came back to overtake the jefferson Demos with the home court advantage by the score of 94-71. At the end of the first round, the Toilers record was 4-1 and Manual was the league's leader. In the second round of league play, Manual ran into great difficulty. This time around they got past the Washington Generals by the score of 71-60. It was a much closer game than the score revealed. The Toilers hosted the L.A. Romans just barely getting by them with the score of 84-83. 1 The Toilers weren't as lucky against the Pathfinders. Although Manual got off to its usually slow start, this may have been the best game for the Toilers in the second round. The Toilers came back from a 16 point deficit to pull up even late in the fourth period, but fell Short by the score of 63-61. Coach Harris and his Purple Gang were handed their second straight defeat by the Dorsey Dons. The Toilers just couldn't seem to play well against the Dons, It was the most disappointing loss ofthe season for the Toilers, as they suffered their first defeat at home by a score of 58-48. jefferson was the most important game for Coach Harris and his Purple Gang in their attempt to make the 1973-74 City Play-Off Tournament. The Toilers looked like their old selves as they defeated jefferson rather badly, 75-58. In the process of losing-'to Fremont and Dorsey, Manual lost its top-seated position to the city poll and fell down to number five. Fremont took over the number one spot, with Crenshaw second, Dorsey third, jordan fourth and Manual fifth. Manual had to depend upon Fremont's defeating Dorsey to get into the City Play-offs. Fremont's 54-S3 victory over Dorsey gave Manual the go-ahead. In the first round of the play-offs, Manual defeated a weak but very conservative Marshall High team. The Arts defeated Marshall by the score of 69-61. Next the Arts ran into one of the tallest teams in the city, Chatsworth. The game was played on NBC. Chatsworth proved to be too strong for Manual, as Chatsworth ran away with the game. Manual didn't play well at all. In fact, they played as if they had never been coached and were defeated by the score of 84-66. 114 V::'A F VmmlVkV Eg5?W7'f P' F' E K, .1 fi' Z , ,iffy 1, iw' -ga.-1 W- .-1-fn, f. f . 4, 9 rv 'M Fur A,- nal, HRVKENS 2U 7. Michael Cutrer Forward The junior varsity team showed a great improvement over last years team. The I. V. 's breezed to a 4 and O pre-season record including a tough 57 to 54 win over University. The I. V. 's first league game came against Washington and it proved to be one of the more exciting games of the year as Manual defeated Washington 74 to 71 in overtime. The J. V. 's then went on to beat L.A. , but suffered their first loss of the year to Fremont 47 to 48 in the last second. The J. V. 's finished the first round of league play with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. The J. V, 's began the second round of league play by rolling over Washington 76 to 62. But then bad luck hit them as they lost their next three games, including a 56 to 57 loss to Dorsey when one of Dorsey's players hit a shot at the buzzer. Over all it was an exciting and successful year for the junior Varsity. Even though they didn't take Southern League, the juniors who composed most of the J. V. team look forward to a promising 74-75 season. ,M Y , X Tyrone BQHSOTI NO13-n Pgfine Guard 4. 2 Guard 5.1 I. -.445 Bottom Row: Kenneth Moore, Nate Randall, Michael Cutrer, Tyrone Beason, David Brown, Nolan Periene, Lionel Pierce. They played better defense than many var- sity teams. This team had no player over 5 '1O , but played like giants. This proves it s not the size of the la er that counis, P Y but the size of his heart. The BEE's executed the fast break to perfection, also executing a 2-2-1 full court zone press commonly used by U.C , L,A , These two skills were the team 'S biggest offensive weapons. But when they set up into the ir smooth running offense, they were unstoppable. This team averaged over 85 points a game, while holding the other teams to 60 points. On two occasions they beat teams by 86 points-126 to 40, Manual vs San Fernando and 127 to 41, Manual vs Washing- ton. Toilers who never saw the Bee's play missed an exciting experience. The starters or the superstars are Wesly Askins, a good defensive player, Darryl . Whetstone, who gave a 100 per cent effort every game, Reggie King, a very exciting forward-guard, Stelle Gaston, who is one of the smoothest players around and john Smith, agreat ball-handling, shooting guard. All the least three men- tioned averaged over 20 points a game. Also there are Ray- mond Brown, a very aggressive defensive player, Michael Cutrer, one of our top rebound- ers, Earl Pierce, Greg Smith, Wardell Joe, and Robert Hopson. . 112 . ig f ', :iil:if'.TiE:fk5' F5 lti... ,,.,,. 5 pptl ,if p Reggie fjo joj King 5'8 Forward 21.1 .,.: 1' 1 1 'WN z. .'f, .5 ll f-U Earl fThe Kidj Pierce 5'1O Guard 4.0 Bottom Row: Steven Gaston, Raymond Brown Darryl Whetstone, Wesly Asldns, John Smith, Earl Pierce. The team was not very tall but had some members on the team that really jumped. As a team they shot fairly well from the outside. This team employed a 1-2-2 full court press and sometimes used a 1-2-2 half court press. If there was any one weak point of the Cee's, it had to be defense. Ta.king all things into consideration, however, they had a good team. There were some outstanding players, such as Lavern BLu'ns, who, when he was hot, he was hot. Also Kirk Downs played a big role for them. He scored and rebounded well. Another shooter was Ruel Grundy, who played two positions, sometimes playing forward, and some- times playing guard. The center was john Ashley, who did a fine job. john did not score a lot of points, but he rebounded and hustled, making up for this. John became a consistent ball player. The team could always count on him. Hillary Rivera came on strong at the end of the season and always had a winning attitude. She has never failed to place 'Q in competition in over a two-year period, with all but one of those wins being first place . .ykk f It is no wonder that Youlanda was deter- mined by Karateka Magazine to be the number one fighting female Black Belt. ln addition, an international publication has selected Youlanda to lead off a series of articles of outstanding female practicio- nors in the World of Karate. Youlanda has put Manual Arts on the map in the World of Karate. We at Manual are proud to have had Youlanda, and we hope Www, that she pursues her other endeavors with the same drive she has shown in karate. Youlanda, we love you. GOOD LUCK! YOUIANDA WORKS OUT UNDER THE WATC HFUL EYE OF HER INSTRUCTOR, MR. RON CHAPEL' Sth DEGREE BLACK BELT WHAT IS KARATE? Part self-defense. . .part sport. . .part exercise. . . part ritual-this is the in- triguing complexity of Karate. lt is the oldest and most devastating form of self-protection Without Weapons that man has ever developedg yet it is rela- tively nevv and obscure to the Western World. In more modern times Karate has taken on the aspects of a major sports activity. And it is this unique combination of defense and sporting techniques that has created a Wave of enthusiasm throughout the United States. Size and sex are no barriers. A woman can master the Karate art of self-pro- tection as effectively as a man and live free of fear. A man of slight build can down a stronger opponent or combat more than one at a time. One of the prime objectives of Karate is the development of spiritual attitudes that lead to humility and self-restraint. A knowledge of Karate is for the pres- ervation of human rights. lt is not in- tended to be used aggressively, or misused for selfish or cruel purposes. To do so a karateist would dishonor himself, . . . as Well as his people. Mr. Chapel Has people of all ages in his class including Manual's Head Security Agent, Mr Reddick as well as other including parents, from the community. I O-9 list' . Coach Ciesielski feels that his team is built of good swimmers. At the meet against Banning the Manual team lost because some of their men were absent. Manual came back in the March ll meet to prove that they were not going to stay down. They came up by beating Locke 81-44. Glen Jackson, placed second in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200- yard freestyle. Michael Thompson dominated the 100-yard freestyle by placing a first for Manual. The Toliers were outstanding in the relays, placing first both times. Steven Norton showed great swimming strokes as he gapped the lead on the relay, winning it for Manual. Eras Noel looked like a promising tenth grader in the Butterfly events. Robert Welsh, ra prom- ising eleventh grader, took a third in the 100- yard breaststroke. Diving was great on both teams even if Locke took first. Manual Arts' own Terry Goring placed second with the score THE PURPLE .ff . To L. At the beginning of league competition, Nashington met Manual at their home pool. The same thing happened as at Locke. The Vlanual Arts Toilers dominated the Washington Generals. The Toilers won the meet 71-39. Vlanual Arts met L. A. at L. A. 'S home pool. This is where Manual met its first defeat. The Foilers were swimming hard, but when they reached the finish line, they were upset to find out they were disqualified from the race. As always the diving was outstanding. Manual Arts' own Terry Goring placed first with his iighest score ever, 37 points. David Brice placed second with 27 points. Let's tip our hats to the Toiler swim team for 1 promising season. I f Q . Coach Garnett The King Baseball is a sport that's in the shadow of football, basketball, and track, but it's the most productive sport at Manual Arts. The Big Purple Machine has been to the play-offs three years straight. They also captured the Southern League Champion- ship last year. The Toilers lost three players to the pros: Dwight Favors, Robert Arceneaux and Chucky james. They also lost two players to junior col- leges: Wilbur Ellis and john Griffin. They lost their shortstop, Larry Fobbs, to U. S. C. The loss of these players presented a problem for Coach Garnett at the end of last year's season. Coach Garnett lmew he had to get some ball players in order to take another championship and even capture the city crown. Coach Garnett started to build his team with returning ball players and called upon some of the LV. Stars, james joseph, Marcus Williams, Harvey Harris, Dennis Quinn, Kirk Downs, Erbie Phillips, joe Shepard. With a lot of determination, hustle, and hard work, Coach Garnett had molded what was thought to be the weakest team in the league into the most disciplined and well-balanced team in the city. When Garnett got through and when everyone saw the Big Purple Machine , they were no longer the so-called weak team: they were Number lil. J. V BA EBALL ,, . j.V. Baseball Bottom Row: S. Tate, A. At the beginning of try-outs, the J. V. 's lost last year's stars to the varsity, and they were consid- ered to be a Weak team. With great young talent and great coaching however, by the time the season came arotmd, the Toilers began where they left off last year, on their Winning Ways. '? Two or three years of one language meets the University requirement but students may take a language for one year as an elective. We have started a Foreign language circle which is a club for interested Foreign language stu- dents. lt will meet on Thursday and Friday at noon in our club room. Members will have an opportunity to see slides, play games and hear music from other cultures at this time. From time to time We will prepare foreign recipes. We try to take our students on trip but this has been difficult due to the cut in transportation and the gas shortage. Places of interest are restaurants, museums and our missions. For September 1974 we would like to open some one-semester conversation classes so that our students could learn some useful phrases without having to finish one entire year. We are again planning to offer our festival fea- turing short plays, songs, dances and food from other countries. 155 S All together now with grace and poise. 4 it 2 rg .M-.N :imp M- . . gwK J -H- 3 Corrective GIRLS f PHYSICAL Modern Dance C lass DUCATIO an will M., 5 fi - ' 'ff A ..-,u,,.,,,,.. I-Ie will be missed by many teachers and students. Mr. Michea's last teaching assignment was biology and health. He was born in Florence, Arizona, where he attended both elementary and high school. He was activie in all sports ex- . cept football since there was no team fielded until a few years later. He was also active in school government, yearbook, and drama. . Mr. Michea attended Arizona State Teachers College at Tempe for two years, lettering in track and basketball. He continued college at University of Arizona at Tucson, at the same time teaching during the regular season, with college classes in summer school. He completed his master's degree at U. S.C. , also during summer school. Mr. Michea started his first teaching job near Phoenix for a year, then taught for 15 years as elementary principal and eighth grade teacher in Ray, Arizona. He totaled 16 years teaching from 1928-1944. Toward the end of the war, he and his family moved to National City, where he taught biology at Sweetwater High for a year and a half. He moved next to Los Angeles and taught at Manual for the next 28 years. 11946-1974i Starling at mid-term at Manual, he taught biology in the Science Department. In 1947 and 1949, he was a sponsor for two senior graduafjng classes. About 1950 the agriculture in- structor retired and Mr. Michea asked to be given the job al- though he had to pick up his horticulutre training as he ,gwent along, with workshops, institures, etc. The classes weareally home gardening or ornamental horticultre. During those early years in gardening, there was considerable space for the planting and growing of flowers and vegetables. The program was a full five-class day. As Went on, Manual had classes in floriculture for girls isiferested in flowers, corsage making, arranging flowers,f etc. .3 79-v Mr. Michea was given a place in the Office for several years, but gave that up since hejieeded all his time in the garden area. As time passed andfiiiings changed, the gardening space diminished, until the gardening area was reduced to only the spacepin Business Building. Enrollment in classes dwindled three years ago, the agriculture classes were closed. At this time he returned to the teaching of life science and then finally to biolgyo. Mr. Michea spent many full and enjoyable years at Manual and most particularly found much pleasure in working outdoors in the gardening endeavors of the school. Mr. Michea says he only hopes that our young people try to realize their full potential and make use of the opportunity which is theirs for the taking. Mr. Michea has four children: Robert and Kathy Qtwinsj and Judy, who is married. His wife, Signa, retired from teaching kindergarten. The students today will miss you very much, Mr. Michea, for all you conu-ibuted to their school. 1 A ARTISAN STAFF Cherylann Fitten Lowella Andrew La.Nita Williams Senior Editor Senior Editor Senior Editor Michael E. jones Linda Martin Gregory Gayles Financial Manager Editor-in-Chief' Sports Editor Deborah Lewis Cheryl Lewis Diane Bell Photographer Undergraduate Editor Undefgfaduale Fdif01' Luella Barnett Leslie Washington Doreen Reid Undergraduate Editor Club Editor Curriculum Editor ' EDITORS ' F cle cia Brown Bre nd a Bern ard E Debra Darby Everett Huckaby 1973- 74 Natalyn Allen Terry Be more Nathaniel Staples Cindy Buffingwn 1 Brenda Grady Julius Harper Belinda Lee Debra Tate STAFF N D A- J 1 Aubrey Walker Agnes Curtis Sponsor 5 Le mvel Fue ry wi A Han-1et Bames Dexter Williams Q? it Amta Buckner Q RTISAN S L WORK, fm! v I 1 3 1 3 4 1 5 1 1 1 1 1 I 1 E V 1 5 Q i 4 I 4 1 Q1
