e JUST ANOTHER YEARBOOK! Kasson-Mantorville JR SR High School Volume 41 TSjr' rT'T7. You may or may not notice that this yearbook is different from past yearbooks. Everything has been placed in chronological order, just like a scrapbook. This is a scrapbook of the year 1987-88 at KMHS. It’s not just another yearbook! THE YEAR The KoMet 1 SEPTEMBER 7: On the day of September 7, one question was asked a hundred times: “Why do I have to go to school?” The summer was great and now it’s over! The pool closed, the wind got a little colder, and school started! Even though we complained, on this page we’re celebrating the beginning of a great year! 1) A group of Seniors gathered to take advantage of some “free” time before school! 2) Dave Swanson and Keith Leitzen. 3) Is there an explanation of this picture? The 1987-88 Football season was a great one as coach Dennis Yell and tri-captains Jason Cartney, Dave Otomo, and Dane Head helped lead the team to a 7-3 season. Having the best team in the Hiawatha Valley League was ori- ginally the goal of the team, but after achieving that with little difficulty, the dome was next. Unfortunately St. Charles stopped us short of that goal 6-7. K-M dominated the All-Confer- ence with 7 players: Bobby Gullickson, Pat Bi- gelow, Jason Cartney, Dane Head, Jon Bu- chanan, Steve Walker, and Dave Otomo. Over- all, a great season, thanks guys! 1987 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Byron 0 7 Lourdes 12 0 Winona Cotter 29 12 Stewartville 26 0 Caledonia 27 0 Holy Angels 14 21 Pine Island 7 0 Lake City 34 13 Blooming Prarie 27 8 St. Charles 6 7 All-Conference: Bobby Gullickson, Pat Bigelow, Jason Cart- ney, Dane Head, Jon Buchanan, Steve Walker, and Dave Otomo. 15 Football BUMP, SET, SPIKE! The 1987 Varsity Volleyball team ended their season with a record of 13 wins and 11 losses. The team was led by captain Stacie Durst and had five players named All- Conference. Stacie Durst, Chris Hettinger, Kim Renner, Robyn Gerving, and Brenda King . Throughout the season the team participated in many scrimmages and tourna- ments. At the Kenyon Tournament they beat West Con- cord 15-5, 15-6, and Medford 15-1, 15-13. Then they met Kenyon in the championship game, and took them to three games before losing by a very close score of 1-15, 15- 12, 15-17. At the John Marshall Tournament they played Chatfield 13-15, 15-6, 15-17, New Prague 14-16, 16-14, 7- 15, and Minnetonka 15-13, 7-15, 15-17. Then the team spent two days at Apple Valley where they faced Annan- dale, winning 5-15, 16-14, 15-4, Tracy-Milroy, losing 7-15, 15-0, Breck, winning 15-10, 15-2, and Luverne, losing 13- 15, 10-15. In District play K-M was seeded fifth and re- ceived a bye in the first round. In the second round they faced a tough Zumbrota Mazeppa team. K-M came out strong and took the first game 15-9 but then Zumbrota got stronger and took K-M 7-15, 12-15, 1-15. This talented, hardworking group played some of the best volleyball ever played at KMHS. Pursuing the best competition possible, K-M faced 2 rated AA Lakeville and several other top-rated AA schools. In addition, K-M played 9 out of 32 Minnesota Class A District Champions in either scrimmages or matches. The JV compiled a 5-1 record and finished 2nd at the tough Mayo JV tourna- ment. Sophomores 33 The 87-88 school year was a fun one to remem- ber with more opportunities and new challenges and being able to have more responsibility. For example, getting our drivers licenses, but first having to pass Drivers Ed. (which, speaking from experience, was nerve-racking!) But with the challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities, there is always the FUN like dressing up on Homecoming week, building the floats, all of the games and the dances. Those are events that make the memories. We only have 2 more years to go, so enjoy! 1. Are we having fun yet? 2. Practice makes perfect! 3. Smile Brandon! Merry Christmas! 4. The 1987-88 basketball season was one full of excite- ment and hard work on the part of the team members. The year got off to a great start after winning six games straight with Eric Vatland as the captain. The team’s final record was 14 wins and 6 losses. In the district tournament, K-M successfully beat Pine Island and Wanamingo, but then fell to Waseca. After their suc- cessful season, captain Eric Vatland and teammate Jason Cartney were selected as all-conference players. The 87-88 season was a memorable one and will be remembered by all, especially by the seniors. Although the seniors will be greatly missed, the prospects for a successful season next year look very good! Wrestling 61 K-M’s Geologists To Tackle Nature For eleven days, June 9-19, eight students and two advisers left K-M High School parking lot for a geol- ogy field expedition. Among those who went were: Todd Distad, Nancy Jones, Kent Kearney, Dave Ness, Paul Pfeiffer, Karen Schomburg, Christa Schwen, and Chris Swenke. The advisers were Mr. Tim Johnson and his brother Jayme Johnson. Dur- ing the eleven day tour the students saw the Bad Lands, the Black Hills, Devils Tower, the Big Horn Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, Teton Na- tional Park, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, and they took a rafting trip down the Snake River. When they got to Harney Peak they not only got to see it but also climb it (which happens to be 2207 ft. above sea level). Though the trip was tiring everyone said they had had a wonderful time and the trip had been very educational. 1. Christa, is it fun to climb to the top of Harney Peak? 2. Back row: Mrs. Huppler, Staci Bitzer, Renee McMains, Heidi Burton, and Mike Prigge. Our group, consisting of people from Byron, Kas- son, and Florence, Wisconsin, left the U.S. on March 13. We arrived in Madrid, Spain and spent the week basically living in Madrid. We toured the city, saw the monuments, Royal Palace, the Prado Museum, other sights and had an enjoyable week. From Ma- drid, on Wednesday our group travelled north by train to Segovia. There we were privileged to tour the Alcazar and see the Roman Aqueduct. We also spent some time in Segovian gift shops. On Friday, we travelled by train to Toledo where we got to see a beautiful cathedral, Moslem arcitecture, and had a chance to get lost in the crooked, hilly streets. On Sunday, March 20, our group again boarded a train to go to our family stays in Jerez. The groups in Jerez had activities planned for us all week and we got about one hour of sleep that week. Our activities included: visiting a bodega, seeing a dancing horse show, having a dance, being accepted into the city, and other get togethers. March 27 we had a sad de- parture from our families and friends in Jerez when we left for Malaga, spending the night there and arrived in the United States again on March 28. Al- though there were some misfortunes, our trip was a wonderful and fun experience. Tour Soviet On March 30, our group of fourteen people gath- ered at K-M High school. After saying our goodbyes we went to the Minneapolis Airport where we met up with about thirty other people from various parts of southern Minnesota. After a seven hour flight from New York we landed in Stockholm, Sweden on the morning of March 31. We spent nearly two days there sightseeing and enjoying the city. On the night of April 1, we landed in Leningrad. Because of a Soviet government mix-up we weren’t able to stay there. The next morning, without any sleep, we flew to Kiev. We spent four days there, meeting Soviet people through trading, on the street, or through set- up meetings, and getting to understand the Russian culture. We met many teenagers at a meeting set up at a discoteche and also at a school. We got to know Soviet teenagers and were able to trade addesses so that we can correspond with each other. After the four days in Kiev, we took a night train to Moscow. There we spent most of our time sightseeing places such as the Kremlin and Red Square. After two days, we boarded another airplane and flew home, all of us exhausted and anxious to get home. Karen Schomburg and Heidi Burton went to a SADD convention in Minneapolis. They also attended a SADD DAY which was held in Stewartville. They talked about what Kasson- Mantorville’s SADD program was like and how it could be improved. Heidi Burton and Karen Schomburg both re- ceived a scholarship from Reader’s Digest. TEEN CONCERN One out of every ten cars on the highway on a Friday or Saturday night will be driven by a drunk driver. Drunk driving is not an accident; it’s a prob- lem that can be solved. The driver who has been drinking is not only risking his life, but the lives of others. What I don’t understand is why so many people who are too drunk to walk get into a 1,600- pound machine and drive. If people could be made to see the problem, this situation might change. Infor- mation works because in the last couple of years, since the start of organizations such as SADD and MADD, people have become more aware of this problem. Today, there are more people willing to be the designated driver or to admit they are too drunk to drive. But still, the alcohol-related deaths multi- ply. To effectively solve the problem, there must be more strict drunk driving laws and rigid enforcement of these laws, which seek to eliminate the need for the saying, “YOU DRINK; YOU DRIVE; YOU DIE!” By Heidi Burton Judy Hanson — the SADD First row: Nancy Jones, Deb Zomok, Michelle Rinn, Karen McClamroch. National Honor Society - previous members. Kel- ly Nannestad, Lara Riniker, Karen Schomburg, and Christa Schwen. On May 31, 1988, ten students were inducted into the National Honor Society. They joined four members that had been elected to the National Honor Society last year. Those members just induct- ed are a mixture of juniors and seniors that show qualities of leadership, character, and a willingness to serve others. The new members are: Jon Buchanan, Marcie Callahan, Stacie Durst, Dane Head, Sarah Holtz, Brenda King, Joel Leonard, Kim Renner, MaryJo Sylwester, and Eric Vatland. The members that they joined are: Kelly Nannestad, Lara Riniker, Karen Schomburg, and Christa Schwen. To be in the National Honor Society, qualities of leadership, service, character, and scholarship are necessary. The person must have a “B” average or above, display leadership qualities in the classroom and other school activities, promote worthy school ac- tivities, successfully hold offices of responsibility and is a good influence on others. Other qualities that should be displayed are putting service to others above self-interest, giving time to talents, showing courtesy towards teachers, meeting responsibilities, and demonstrating highest attitudes toward honesty, reliability, fairness, and tolerance. If a student in eleventh or twelfth grade has a “B” average or above, their name is placed on a ballot sheet. This ballot is then given to all of the teachers and they vote for four juniors and eight seniors. The ballots are then tabulated. A selection committee makes the final decision. Voting occurs twice a year, once in the fall and then again in the spring. I pledge myself to uphold, the high purpose of National Honor Society To which I have been elected: I will be true to the principles for which it stands 1 will be loyal to my school; and will maintain and encourage High standards of Character, Schol- arship, Leadership, and Service. National Honor Society 77 78 Spring Play The Spring Production of “I REMEMBER MAMA” Being in “I Remember Mama” was one of the most interesting experiences that we. the cast members, have ever had. Though we had a few difficulties, (such as problems with not having enough time to have a play, a cast member in the hospital, and another sick), we still worked hard to learn lines, blocking, and trying to find and fit into costumes!! We would also like to thank Mrs. Frarck for all her hard work, patience, and advice. Everyone involved with the play would like to make a special dedication for Lara Riniker, the original Katrin. ' Go cF '88 Graduation 93 ctober 25th, 1987 in Minnesota will be remembered for a long time. Why? The Minnesota Twins won the World Series on that date! That was only their second time in the World Series since becoming the Twins in 1961, and their first championship since 1924 as the Washington Senators! Minne- sota had a right to celebrate! The fans in the Dome for games 1, 2, 6, and 7 cheered loud enough to help destroy the St. Louis Cardinals in all four games! At the beginning of the sea- son, the Twins, with Tom Kel- ly, a rookie manager, and a very young team, had a 150-to-l longshot of winning the 1987 World Series! They had the lowest winning percentage of any team that has ever played in the World Series, and the worst road record. But, they also had the best home record in the Majors, and they won the games that they HAD to win. First, they topped Kansas City for the A.L. Western Division, then they beat Detroit for the A.L. Championship, and finally they took St. Louis 4 games to 3 for the grand finale! Gary Gaeti was named MVP for the American League, and Frank Viola for the World Series, but anyone who knows the Twins also knows that the whole team deserved those MVP trophies. Every player contributed to the wins, and the Twins showed how to play as a TEAM! Two of the team members became “heroes” during the Series by tying a World Series record for the number of grand slams! Dan Gladden came up with one in Game 1 and Kent Hrbek helped the Twins take Game 6 with his grand slam just when they needed it. Frank “Sweet Music” Viola pitched game 7 for eight innings with no walks and seven strike outs. Jeff Reardon came in in the ninth inning with the Twins leading 4-2. He struck out the first batter, forced the second to pop up to Gaeti, and the third batter sent a grounder to Gaeti who threw the ball to Hrbek at first to end the World Series! Minnesotans began their celebration in the Dome, the streets, or wherever they were! The Tuesday after the end of the Series was declared a state holiday by Gover- nor Perpich, and a victory parade was planned. The streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and the lawn of the Capitol were jammed with people, and confetti was flying everywhere. The celebration continued a couple days later when President Reagan congratulated the team at the White House. The Minnesota Twins Championship season will surely be remembered for a long time to come, or until they do it again! Whichever comes first! Again in 1988 perhaps?! NOT JUST ANOTHER WORLD SERIES! The picture shown on this page is from the Twins’ General Office. We’d like to thank them for letting us use this pic- ture.
