We feel that this year proved to be very successful for both teach- ers and students at K-M. Life at K-M can be quite fun, if we want it to be. Hanging around our friends, showing our spirit at games, or just get- ting into trouble are all memories that everyone has had at K-M. We hope that we are able to recapture those memories in the following pages of this yearbook. Only we students of Kasson- Mantorville know what it's like to live the LIFE AS A KOMET! Thanks for your support, Kari, Lara, and Mary Jo Editors of the 1986-87 yearbook BACK TO t's the beginning of a new year and the first day of school is full of wonderful sights. Here we have gathered pic- tures of just a few of the sights seen around the school on the first day. Welcome back to the home of the KoMets! The first day of school is suddenly here, and going back is what we fear. We hate to leave our favorite places, but we're excited to see all the faces. We'll wander aimlessly around the halls, until the schoolbell starts to call. Today we must learn all the rules, and tomorrow we'll get to the real part of school. Homework, homework that's all we'll do, but we have to have a little fun too. The last day of school seems a long way away, especially since we have to survive the first day! The first day as a senior! Denise Hole- cek, Denise Bartel, Rhonda Wigham, Terrie Durst, Jenny Wharton, Missy Engel, Hilary Trow, Tim Brawthen, and Heidi Kujath on their first day as seniors. Mr. Yell checking his watch to make sure he's not late for class! 2 Here's some more common sights! Mr. Vang waiting for the students to arrive, some students listening to the rules for the hundreth time, and the popular pop machine- ready for use! VvnV MRS. I1TAM V Coftomllm, Utafci u)lwt fidendi ane u Ho omecoming 1986 brought out the school spirit in everyone. Monday led the week with Dress-up day, on which students and faculty put on their dressiest clothes for a day. That evening Dan Olive and Shanin McNeil were crowned king and queen for 1986-87. Congratulations to the other king and queen candidates and underclass- men attendants: Missy Engel, Terrie Durst, Den- ise Holecek, Traci Nelson, and Rhonda Wigham. Tim Benson, David Derby, Scott Sparks, Gary Suess, and Chris Wanous. Freshmen class atten- dants, Gena Hettervig and Jeremy Bigelow, Sophomore class attendants, Robyn Gerving and Steve Walker, Junior class attendants, Stacie Durst and Jay Lonien, and Student Council Member, Scott Benson, and AFS Student, Ana Gaspar. Tuesday the students put on their ber- mudas, Hawaiian shirts, and shades to brighten up the school. Then they showed off their cheering ability to help our volleyball teams sweep past Winona Cotter. Wednesday brought all sorts of wierd things. Students and teachers dressed in clothes fitting a certain occupation! The volleyball team traveled to Rochester to go up against Mayo. We didn't need any music or even a band because he had tons of K.-M fans jamming in the stands! The big day came fast and it was suddenly FRIDAY! With all the excitement of the day, who could study? The pepfest was full of wonderful things, including a very funny skit by the sophomore class led by Todd Hughes. The teachers came out to do the year cheer and our male female cheerleaders entertained us with a cheer and The Wave! The annual parade through Kasson gave the students a chance to show off their handy work on floats. The fans helped lead the football team to victory over Austin Pacelli and then danced the night away to music by Sudden Impact. Morning came and the homecoming festivities were over for this year at least. For the Seniors it was the end of high school homecomings and a very sad time, but life at KMHS still goes on. 4 HOMECOMING TUESDAY 30 BERMUDA HA WAHAN VOLLEYBALL -I C- COTTER mommy 1 OCCUPATION MURAL JUDGING DRECC-UP CORONATION THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR WEEK 1986 TUUtSDM 2 FRIDAY 3 TOGA m DAY CROSS COUNTRY MEET VOLLEYBALL -VS- MAYO BLUE-N-WHITF OLD PING PEPFEST PARADE FOOTBALL -VPACELU DANCE K-M on tltb gol THE JUNIOR CLASS WITH THE WINNING MURAL THE SOPHOMORES WITH THE WINNING FLOAT THE SENIORS AND THEIR GOATS COMING IN 2ND IN THE FLOAT COMPETITION TODD . . The Boys' Varsity Team consisted of the top six golfers. Because there was only one senior on the team, the possibilities for a strong 1987-88 season look good. On the other hand, the Girls' Varsity Team also had a very successful season. With returning All- Conference member, Hilary Trow, the girls' team got off to a good start. For the fourth year in a row, Hilary Trow again was selected to the HVL All- Conference Team. No female golf member in the history of K-M has ever accomplished this feat. At the District meet, all of the K-M golfers did very well. Darin Splittoesser made it to the playoffs for the team, and all of the other boys' golf members gave it their best. At the region meet, the girls competed against other teams and indivi- duals. Hilary Trow had her best showing of the year at the Region meet. She missed advancing to the State Golf Meet by two strokes. Overall, the K-M Golf Teams performed great throughout the year, and their future looks very promis- ing! Besides the many long hours spent rehearsing, the choirs did have some fine performances at the concerts. The first concert of the year took place at Christmastime. In addition to the large choirs' performances, many small ensembles also performed. At the junior high level, the Mixed Ensemble, a small group of junior high singers, performed many times throughout the year. At the senior high level, some of the various groups that rehearsed and performed during the year were Chamber Singers, Girls' Ensemble, Sextet, and Boys' Octet. These groups spent many hours practicing outside of classroom time, but because of all the hard work and dedication, they gave many fine performances. The next concert given was at St. John's Church in town, and once again, the choirs sang to a full church. Throughout the year, the Senior Choir had many activities taking place. In April, many of the choir members performed at district contests which were held at West Concord this year. Out of all the groups and individuals that performed at districts, only one event did not star. Those events that did star at districts then advanced to the region-state music contests where everyone did a fine job!! The big event of the year for the Senior Choir was a trip to Chicago where the choir performed at a high school located in the suburbs of Chicago. The choirs concluded the year with the Coffeehouse Concert given by the Senior High Choir, and a Junior High Concert where the Junior Choir performed also. sCeuufl, cltoVv Third row: Jeremy Smith, Todd Hughes. Seulto CltoVi lufomuizei uc Clutoqol 66 In April of 1987, the Senior Choir travelled to Chicago as part of our scheduled choir trip. We left on Thursday and drove for about seven or eight hours until we arrived in a suburb of Chicago called Hoffman Estates. Hoffman Estates is where a past K-M choir director now teaches and lives, so the trip was also a reunion for some. The first night we stayed with other high school choir members from Hoff- man Estates. Even though most of us only got about four hours of sleep, we preformed for the Hoffman Estates Con- cert Choir the next day, and we had an excellent perfor- mance! After our performance, we went to a science muse- um in Chicago, but on our way through Chicago, we exper- ienced what the real world is like outside of K-M. Later that night, we attended a Broadway musical which we all thought was superb! We all had fun at the hotel (especially the guys that ran through the halls with the sheets over their heads, and those students which were sneaking out win- dows!)!!! The following day we started to head for home, but first we stopped at The House on The Rock, which was like a huge museum. (Bill and Becky, look at this bed with the satin sheets!! Does that sound familiar?!!) All in all, the choir trip was a total blast. It brought the whole choir together because everyone stuck together as a group for the majority of the trip, and futhermore, everyone got to know each other better, and most of us made new friends which we will always remember from Hoffman Estates. The script was written by Mrs. Frarck, and the songs, tak- en from Broadway musicals, were directed by Mr. Clark Johnson. Many may not realize, but this musical required a lot of practice, hard work, and patience! Even though the cast sometimes got frustrated with practices, and rehearsals, it was definitely all worth it! On both nights, the large audiences gave standing ovations. Through out it all the cast and crew developed new friendships and strengthened old. All got to know themselves better through the characters and their in- dividual personalities. Ironically, one could see a little bit of each of the characters in themselves, and they would like to believe that maybe some of the audience got to know themselves better from the performance. Pete?), when Shanin supposedly dropped her mirronhnnp on performance night, right before her solo (Boy, what a laugh!)! cockiness and tne interchangeable line that he always screwed up ( Football i Scott's constant makes a boy into a man , or is it a MAN into a BOY ?), the moon that came out during a rehearsal (Does that sound familiar TERRY? Kari was impressed!) all the wild times after rehearsal (Practicing our Karate on signs, riding on the hood of cars on the highway, or other things that can't be publicly announced), and last but not least, constantly repeating lines from the play at almost any time during the day. We would like to thank everyone in the cast for their hard work and dedication! We would also like to thank Linnea Zwart (stage manager), Matt Tardoff (spot light). Sonny Johnson (percussionist), Clark Johnson (vocal direc- tor), and Cheryl Frarck (artistic director). V' ««.I CL .. And the feel- ing I got when we received a standing ovation both nights is one which is indescribable, but yet it brought tears to my eyes those nights and still does!! Thanks (to everyone involved in the play) for such a great time!! -Kari Shubert Typical comments from Mrs. Frarck during practices were as follows: l C'mon, girls! You're too nice! Get MEAN!! 2. You all look like you're at a funeral. SMILE!! 3. SMILE and they'll forgive you anything! 4. Don't look at your feet; make 'em believe you know what you're doing and you're havin' fun doin' it! 5. This past fall, with the help of the K-M FHA Chapter, students and teachers helped to begin a SADD Chapter. SADD stands for Students Against Driving Drunk, and our purpose is one of preventing students from drinking and driving. To accomplish this goal the SADD Chapter held many activities this year. Our major fundraiser this year was the All-Star Basketball Game, which set the Male High School teachers against the Guys' Varsity Basketball Team and the Female teachers against the Girls.' Varsity Basketball Team. We also held “Health Days at which we presented movies and other information about drink- ing and driving. Other activities included talking to the 4-H clubs, the 5th and 6th grade students, and attending a presenta- tion by a national speaker in New Ulm. Our highlight of this year was entering the Reader's Digest “Don't Drink and Drive competition. To enter, we wrote a composition stating the activities we've held to prevent the problem of drinking and driving. In May, we received the results of the competition, and we were surprised to learn that we won a $4,000 scholarship which was distributed among Heidi Burton, Karen Schomburg, and Kari Shubert. Our '86-'87 SADD officers were: Heidi Burton-president, Kari Shubert-vice-president, Sarah Johnson-secretary, Peter Wall- strom-treasurer, Karen Schomburg-education director. Deb Zo- mok-jr. high director, and Lois Kriedmacher-advisor. Overall, we had a very exciting and successful year. Thanks to all!! 71 The KM FFA got off to a moving start with a new Ag advisor, Mr. Kiefer, and the awesome officer team made up of: Rod Jorgen- son, Jason Reber, Becky Madery, Tim Paulson, Gary Liedtke, Mike Messen- ger, Dave Wilcox, and Betty Dutton. The year be- gan with a softball team, the children's Barnyard at the fair, and practice for judging teams at several contests throught the summer. The KM Chapter kept up the pace by hosting the District 15 Fall Meeting and later sending six delegates from our Chapter to the National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. FFA week was shock full of ac- tivities to make the community aware of what we do. Throughout the year we had several fund rais- ers such as the Crops plot. Fruit Sales, a Nut and Bolt Drive, and a Hawaiian Dance. The Chapter had several honors this year. Rod Jorgenson earned the State Farmer degree, Gary Liedtke will be advancing to the National Reeion competition in Fruit Vege- table production, the Dairy team made up of Paul Aarsvold, Tracy Schaefer, Mike Messenger, and Becky Madery advanced to State competition, and Betty Dutton was elected District 15 Secretary, her 2nd year as a District officer. The year was ended with a Parent- member banquet at which past KM Vo-Ag teacher Jim Ertl spoke. Thank you to anyone who supported the FFA in anyway! With the 1985-86 President, Betty Dutton returning, the year got off to a ent, Betty Dutton - President, great start! Our first major fundraiser was the Mr. Legs Dance at which Dan Oliver, Chris Wanous, and Darin Splittstoesser were named the football players with the sexiest legs. Next, in December, we again helped with the shopping of Santa Anonymous. This annual community project at which we help the Lions' Club of Kasson shop for Christmas presents for children of low-income families. Our next activity was preparing Action-Activity Events for our annual winter District meeting. At this meeting, the K-M FHA members who participated by presenting their AAE's to various judges; although all participants did a fine job, Sherri Ness and Gena Hettervig, Kathy Ness and Heidi Jacobson all received gold star ratings on their presentations. They then advanced to the State meeting where Kathy Ness received a callback , which is a very high honor. Another big congratulations goes to Nancy Jones, who was selected to the Minnesota's State PEP (Peers Educating Peers) squad! We finished our year with the all-time favorite Sadie Hawkins' Dance. Finally all members attended the annual FHA Banquet, and the seniors 72 said goodbye to many fun memories (especially when Heidi Nannestad broke into the church!). 00 LaJ K-M curfdevMi itmd MATH TEAM: Joel Leonard, Sarah Holtz, Kelly Nan- nestad, Lara Riniker, Karen Schomburg, Alan Charon, Steve Renner, Jon Buchanan, Scott Benson, and Gary Liedtke. Seniors not pictured: Steve Blatti, Dave Lien, Danny Parker, Matt Prigge, and Tina Thompson This year the yearbook staff distributed a survey containing many different questions. If you wish to find out how the SENIORS replied, read on. The first question asked of the SENIORS was, What is your favorite thing to do on a week- end? The most popular response was, Go out with friends, or Go to 'Roch.' Other responses included, Sleep, Party, and Go cruising. One odd, but entertaining response was, I can't answer due to the fact that I'm not old enough! Another question in our survey was, What is your worst fear after high school? Some replies were, Finding a good enough job, and College. When asked what the SENIORS looked forward to in the future, after high school, most answered that they looked forward to fun college, moving out being independent, and a few answered that they looked forward to getting married. From the SENIORS who filled out this survey, five said they had their first date while they were in eighth grade. Ten said that their first date was in the ninth grade, while eleven replied that their sophomore year was the year of their first date, and one person's response to this question was that sixth grade was when they went out on their first date. The SENIORS' favorite TV show was the Cosby Show. Next in line was Moonlight- ing, followed by everyone's favorite soap opera, Days of Our Lives.
