Bill Thompson was named All Conference for the 1982 season. Cross Country ’82 was probably the “most Kraziest” year Kasson’s ever experienced. We teamed with Byron to become one. This mass of racey runners consumed a full season of exhilarat- ing excitement such as: Tron Run (run with walkie talkies), Godfa- ther’s Run (a run of all runs, to Godfather’s of course, and I shouldn’t have to explain what happened at Godfather’s), Otto’s Run (sprint to Otto’s Bakery on Fridays), Visit Run (visit houses of runner friends), LSD (long slow distance), we went swimming at a fellow runner’s house, and, oh yes, we ran in meets too! We ended the season with Awards Night. Awards: Unsung hero-Mary Jo. The Unsung Hero award is for the person who keeps going but never gets there. Captains, Most Improved, Most dedicated thin clad, Ott’s award (which is an apron). Button: My pace or yours. Ending practice every night, we engaged in a tedious game of ZIP. It’s played with 3 soccer balls and cones as goals. There were 3 ruis: 1. no hands, 2. no boundaries, and no one could ever forget the third rule. Yes, a season to be remembered, to be cherished, and to be missed. Thanks Byron! “My pace or yours” button: Glennys Unsung Hero: Mary Jo Otto’s run apron: Lisa Captains Kay and Bill Most dedicated thin clad: Kay and Bill — Kay Schrafel, Captain K-M BYRON CROSS The 1982-83 Cross Country season was coached by Mike Cabaya and Chuck Juhnky. The team of 4 boys and 4 girls practiced in Byron with the Byron Cross Country team. One practice was an 8 Vi mile run which ended at Godfather’s pizza in Rochester. Neither boys or girls had enough runners to place as full teams, but a better turnout is expected next year. The best boy’s three mile time was my own of 17:40 and the best girl’s 2 mile time was Lisa Dibble with a time of 14:27. —- Bill Thompson, Captain VOLLEYBALL First Row: Diane Hughes, Tracy Wilson, Winette Dykes, Staci Bigelow, Kris Mienert. Volleyball Championship) yet many unfulled goals summerize the 1982 Volleyball Season. Our 16-3 season was second only to the 17-3 of the 1981 Komets. Success is sometimes not measured in the actual achievement of goals but the effort put forth and the continual quest for excellence. Our preparation for the season began with the 29 who attended the K-M Volleyball Camp featur- ing Wally and Sam of Apple Valley High School and Jill Halsted of the U of M-All-American. The skills of hitting, passing, setting, Rolling, doing the “JETSON”, and doing warm-ups to “The Eye of the Tiger” occupied the week. We scrimmaged the best we could find: RCC, St. Charles and Southland; and Apple Valley (once ranked 5th in State AA). Our 7 seniors were excellent. I doubt if Southern Minnesota has a better passer than Rhonda Jensen, who also lead us in service points. No one worked harder than Renata Borgstrom. Cindy Christenson and Staci Bigelow would have started on most teams in the area. Our Tri-Captains Alisa Mienert, Mary Tollefson, and Raegen Bradford also represented K-M on the H.V.L. All Conference team. We will miss these people. 1982 Schedule 16-3 Rochester Lourdes Rochester John Marshall Wanamingo Rochester Mayo West Concord Lourdes Tourney Blooming Prairie Lourdes Wabasha-Kellogg Hayfield Dodge Center Cannon Falls Byron Lake City Pine Island Plainview Zumbrota Stewartville Goodhue (dist 4) Claremont (dist 4) 18-5; 18-7 15-18;18-11;18-11 18-11;18-11 18-9;16-18;10-18 18-11;18-4 18-1;18-16 18-5;18-6 18-1;4-18;18-11 18-4;18-8 18-6; 18-9 18-12;18-7 18-2; 18-4 18-13;18-11 18-10;13-18;18-10 11-18;18-12;15-18 18-9; 18-6 18-8;18-8 18-10;13-18;18-6 14-18;11-18 21 1. TEAM RECORD The 8-7 record of the 1983 Komets is the best record since 1977. The foundation of the improved record was the efforts of tri-captains Lane Cunning- ham, Brett Rasmussen, and Mike Terry. The 3 had a combined record of 73-10-3. 6 Komets advanced to the Regional Tournament. The lone seventh grader in the tournament was Dane Head who recorded an impressive 14-13 varsity re- cord. Paul Stucky (14-15) 132 lbs. and most improved, Lawren Castner (heavy-weight), also advanced with our tri-captains. The 1983 B-squad was one of K-M’s best according to B-squad coach and former K-M great, Larry Kimble. The season was highlighted by their championship at the Hayfield tournament and strong showings at the Rochester and Goodhue tournaments. Larry Hegge- dahl (14-3) led the B-squad with 10 pins followed by Chris Burdick (14-0) 9 pins, Tony French (17-2) 8 pins, and Mike Madery and Tom Dohrmann with 7 pins. HVL AND DISTRICT CHAMPIONS The 1983 K-M baseball team was one of the finest in history for K-M. Their major accomplishments were losing only once during the regular season and tying for the HVL Cham- pionship with W-K and Cannon Falls. They also advanced farther in post- season play than any previous K-M team. They won the District 4 title with a 6-4 victory over Pine Island and narrowly missed a state tournament berth by losing in the region final 14- 11 to Austin Pacelli. The final record for the team was 13-2, and the team batting average was .321. Coach Chuck Hansen REGION RUNNER- UP 1. Shortstop Mike Kelley had a very successful baseball season. He was chosen All-Conference, lead the team in home runs with 5, scored the most runs (20), and was the team batting champion with an average of .451. 2. This year the Student Council sponsored several dances which included: The Homecoming Dance, The Halloween Dance, Junior Prom, and a variety of others. The Student Council was successful in helping institute the honor pass system for the 1983 school year. This year a businessman’s breakfast was held in the Fall to show members of the community what is going on in the school. An Employee of the Month club was started by the Student Council. As well as being success- ful, the members were productive by having benches built in the main hallways and by landscaping (planted trees along the front driveway) in conjunction with the FFA club. 60 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY OLD MEMBERS: Staci Bigelow, Matt Weimer, Lori McClam- roch, Dawn Malerich, Tamisha Werner. Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a High School student. Membership is, however, more than an honor. It carries with it a responsibility that should be considered the beginning of an obligation. He is not only obligated to continue to demon- strate those outstanding qualities of Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service, but also to exert a new influence to improve conditions about him and to promote those qualities which brought about his selection. BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ STATE Boys’ and Girls’ State was founded by the American Legion and Auxiliary and is based on belief in God and faith in our Nation. Young people who attend Boys’ and Girls’ State are exposed to a program that promotes belief in a Supreme Being and attempts to teach patriotism by studying materials related to city, county and state government. This year’s Boy State Representative is Carey Boyum. The Girl’s State representative is Gayle Jorgenson. Girl’s State alternate is Michelle Messen- ger. 61 The K-M AFS club hosted Francisco Alberto Astorino from Argentina this year. He stayed with the Steve Gutzman family. Kennejh Rogers Senior Band, GRADUATION GRADUATIONGRADUATIONGRADUATIONGRADUATIONGRADUATIONGRADL “GRADUATION SPEECH” Well, this is it the big day that we all have waited for. It’s kind of strange and scarry, because now that this day that we’ve waited for, for so long, has finally come, it strikes some of us that maybe we’ll actually miss (not the work, but) K M a little, especially because this last year went by so fast-or the “NEW BEGINNING” came up so fast. But I think we’re ready for it • High School has served its purpose as a stepping stone for helping us to grow and develop into young adulthood. “You can’t discover new oceans until you leave the shore.” Our motto has quite a bit of meaning to it, if you think about it. You’re never going to get anywhere until you make a move. You’re never going to go anywhere until you leave. You’re never going to discover anything until you leave and search for it, and work for it. Dare to take an exciting risk, and don’t be afraid to leave the past behind to find something exciting out in the world. Even though most of us will miss K-M a little, it is time to get out and see the world. I’m gonna • I’m going into the Navy, and I’m going to sail around the world, a couple of times, 1 hope. In a way, it’s all kind of funny to me - personally. It all is kind of symbolic. I quit my part-time job at the Hubbell House on a coincidental day. I had quit on May 21, which happens to be to my surprise, “Armed Forces Day.” Plus, it is sort of neat that the motto also fits exactly what I’m going to be doing and what’s more. I’ll be leaving for the Navy July 5. the day after Independence Day. j’m sure that everyone else can find some sort of symbolism in their graduation. It is not very hard to find. I have a piece of writing that I have included in my speech that Julie Olmsted gave to me that is appropriate: If you believe that there’s a place beyond what eyes can see; beyond that hill, and further still, the grass grows green. If for a time the only sound would be of falling leaves; then you would hear true harmony if only you believe. Days move op beyond the time we would allow, and all of our days become what we call memories. And what we’ve loved will always stay within our heart, though this moment would lead us apart: So if that place beyond the hill seems further than a dream; there waits a world far better still, if only you believe. Well, even though some of us are moving and going away, we all know that Kasson-Mantroville will always be our home, and we all will always be friends. There will be a lot of things that I will never forget: All the things that you can do as a teenager, but not as an adult. I’ll never forget the wild and crazy times, all the fun extra-curricular activities, and I will never forget all the stages that I went through in adolescence throughout my school yeai’s. Some weren’t fun, but others were OK - Like when I got my first real part-time job, and when I bought my first car, (even though it was a piece of junk.), and all the struggles I had with my parents to get more freedom and to be able to stay out late. Now I just sort of laugh about it. Now I realize that that is not really very important. Other things that I will never forget are Mega Moons, Joe Arnold Schwart- zanagger Finn poses, Renata interrogating teachers with questions during .class, and when Mary Tollefson sprays that stuff up her nose for her allergies. I’ve even already heard a few people talking about a class reunion five years from now. It will be interesting to see how some people turn out. I would like to wish all of you GOOD LUCK and happiness in the future. Whatever you decide to do, just remember that the most important thing is that you’re happy, and that if you love life, life will love you back. If you have love, then you have all that matters. We all would be so happy if we would or could just believe in our dreams and think of them as goals, and not just as fantasys. Live your life to its fullest. To live your life in your own way, to reach the goals you have set for yourself, to be that that you want to be, THAT IS SUCCESS. And I know that this class of 1983 from Kasson-Mantorville wll be successful in the big world, because we’re all special 1983 graduates of K-M. It’s time we leave High School and leave teenagehood behind in the past. To end it all, I would like to say that I’m very thankful for all my friendships here in Kasson and Mantorville that I’ve had - and always will, I hope. I’ve had some pretty special ones. Thanks for all the love and for all the memories. I’m going to miss you all Thank-you! — Rick Kamerer Ladies And Gentlemen: We made it! We are the graduating class of 1983. It is now time for us to go into the world and be as eager and fearless as possible, even though every one of us is a little uncertain about what the future holds in store. Our class motto, “You can’t discover new oceans until you have discover new frontiers. As we do this, many precious moments of our school years will be left behind, but kept in our memories forever. The Kasson-Mantorville schools have been very good to all of us. It began that day a big, orange bus roared up to our driveways, stopped, opened it’s doors, and revealed forty gawking faces. We told our mothers that we would do anything for her if she didn’t make us get on. But we got on, and those faces soon became our classmates and friends, and through much trial and error, we learned to work, play and love each other. Moving on through grade school it came time for us to move to Mantorville. We had begun to grow up and this was evident by the activities that were taking place on the playground. Young romance was at it’s peak in these years. Often times, one would not find our that a certain person liked you until it had been relayed through twenty other people because the boy would run by the girl and hit her as hard as he could, and if she hit back, it was true love. This is also the time when some of us joined band and choir. Some of the instruments were larger than the people playing them, but we didn’t care. We thought we were awesome, so were the noises we produced. The grade school years went rather quickly. We learned to read, write do arithmetic, and play flutophone together. Finally it came time for the 7th grade. Wow, we were going to be high schoolers. We now though that we were the greatest thing around, but our attitudes changed quickly when we first walked down the senior high wing and saw that everyone was 3 ft. taller than us. 7th grade was when some of us began to go out for sports. It seemed that uniforms were never quite the right size or color, but we had a good time anyway, even if we did have to wear tape around our waists in order for our shorts to stay up. Lunch was another eventful happening of the day. No longer did we have to stuff our mashed potatoes in our milk cartons to avoid eating them. We now had a choice of many different goodies. Our Senior high days will probably be the most remembered of all. 1 don’t think that it’s the books and homework we’ll remember, but rather the extra things we have done together. Together is a very meaningful word, for today is our last day to be together. As I look out on my classmates faces, 1 remembered silly little things that each of you have done and the experiences we have shared. These will be cherished by me forever, and I’m sure all of you will have many moments of your school years to cherish. Robert Frost wrote “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made the difference. We now must leave the security we have known all these years in school and take new roads into the future. A whole new world likes ahead of us. We now can begin to make our own decisions and contribute to society as much as possible, thus we enter the world of adulthood. We can learn from our past experiences but we can no longer live in the past. It is time to break free. The dreams we have had an now become a reality if the effort is put into making them come true. It is perfectly o.k. to be afraid of the future, for if we weren’t afraid there would be something drastically wrong with us. Our class will make the most of what’s ahead for we have the abilities and courage to do so. I will miss this school, but I think I will miss the friendships I have made even more. Good luck to all of you. Give to the world your best and the best will come back to you. It is often stated that the best things said come last. An old Irish prayer reads like this, “Take time to work, it is the price of success. Take time to think, it is the source of power. Take time to play, it is the secret of perpetual youth. Take time to read, it is the foundation of wisdom. Take time to be friendly, it is the road to happiness. Take time to dream, it is hitching your wagon to a star. Take tome to look around-thc day is to short to be selfish. Take time to laugh, it is the music of the soul.
