Volleyball The Kasson-Mantorville Girls Volleyball team wasn’t as successful during the 1978 season as in the 1977 season, but all of the squads greatly improved. The A-Squad consisted of 4 seniors, 5 juniors, 1 sopho- more, and 1 freshman so there will be a lot of exper- ience next year. Merlin Cordes coached the A-Squad and the 7th and 8th grade teams. The K-M Boys’ Basketball team ended the ’78-’79 season with a 7-9 conference record and a 9-10 overall record. The boys had a very tough HVL schedule this year, with the eventual Class A state champs heralding from our confer- ence. The KoMets recorded non-conference wins over two of our close rivals, Hayfield (51-41) and Dodge Center (67- 38). They went into triple overtime against Wabasha-Kellogg but managed to come out on the winning side. In District 4 tournament play, the boys were seeded 4th out of 11 teams and had a first round bye. Their loss to Goodhue (65- 54) ended a very competitive season. The KoMets were cap- tained by Arlie Allen, and will be losing two other seniors, Dan Buck and Kevin Anderson. The outlook for next year is promising, with seven returning lettermen. In addition, the leading scorers, Dan Unger (12.6 ppg), Steve Johnson (11.9 ppg), and Jerry Unger (11.4 ppg), will all be returning. The leading rebounders were Steve Johnson with 181 and Dan Unger with 172. Jerry Unger had the best free-throw percentage with 82%. Steve fights for the ball. 44 Jerry goes up for an easy lay-up. Above are Marsha West and JoEllen Skogen, co-captains of the ’78-’79 team. To the left, Sheri looks for an opening in the KoMets’ first game of the season against Wanamingo. 48 The KoMet Girls’ Varsity basketball team finished the season with a 15-1 conference record and a 19-2 overall record. During the season they compiled an impressive 14 game winning streak. With only one returning starter from the ’77-78 team, K-M was not considered a contender for the conference title. How- ever, the girls beat title favorite Stewartville on their home court in what was possibly the most exciting game of the season, and ended conference play HVL co-champs. In tournament play, favorite K-M was upset in the District 4 finals by Goodhue (50-52). Co-captain JoEllen Skogen ended a productive three year varsity career by being the career leader in total points, rebounds, field goals made and attempted, and free throws made and attempted. During 78-79, she had the most points of the season and the best free-throw percentage (59%). She was followed closely by Linda Wendler (58%), who in addition had the best shooting percentage (46%). Co-captain Marsha West had the most assists (47) of the season and is also the career leader in both assists (87) and steals (103). Sheri Vrieze had the most offensive (81) and defensive (90) rebounds, followed by JoEllen Skogen with 51 and 87. In team statistics, the girls averaged 49.1 points per game to 30 for their opponents, had better field goal and free- throw percentages, and outrebounded them, averaging 31.9 per game to their opponents’ 27.4. This year, three KoMets were selected to the HVL All-conference squad: senior JoEllen Sko- gen, junior Sheri Vrieze, and sophomore Linda Wendler. With four returning starters, many returning lettermen, and a strong B-squad, the outlook for next year appears promising. Before the game—“Hip za zoo za . . The KoMets were seeded No. 2 in the Dist. 4 tournament but after beating Goodhue, lost to Wanamingo. Junior Dan Unger was this year’s MVP with Keith Beckman getting honors as batting champ.
