Bonny Deno (Capt.), Marie Hoehn (Head Capt.), Cindy Madery and Jenn Zelinski did a fine job in cheering the wrestlers to victories in HVL, Dist. and Reg. meets. Wanda Krieg (Capt.), and Angie Pike cheered at their last basketball game against Winona-Cotter in the Dist. finals. They too did a fine job of representing K-M. The cheerleader's loyality and spirit helped to guide the boys and girls to successful seasons. These qualities were also showen by the remaining sixteen girls, who with spirit-filled attitudes, will hopefully continue to cheer and support K-M. K-M was faced with a rebuilding year. Several injuries during the season to Jeff Wendler, Randy Ranvek, and Dave Christenson, slowed the team down. The annual K-M Jaycee meet was held in the normal down pour at the Zumbro Valley Golf Course. K-M had the best overall team race at Cannon Falls. For the future outlook, K-M will lose two lettermen, Jeff Wendler and John Allen. Both will be missed with Wendler being the top runner all year (11th place overall in HVL), and Allen being one of the hardest working runners. K-M will have a returning nucleus to build upon with lettermen, Dave Christen- son, Jon Ness, Jack Falkenhagen, and Randy Ranvek. In the 3 mi. race, 16:24 was the best time of the season made by Jeff Wendler. The next highest was 17:37, by Jon Ness. Wendler also passed 425 runners this season. Get on your mark . . . Get set. . . BANG!! 21 Syl wester Steps Aside After Aine Years After the efforts of the hard and hot two weeks of preseason practice in August, it seemed the team was destine for a good season. But after a heart breaker with St. Charles, which the KoMets lost in overtime, the foot- ball team started to slide, losing the next five games. Coach Sylvester then called a team meeting, where he stepped down from the head coaching job. Dave Ginther, the B-squad coach at this time, was named head coach, which brought the resignation of backfield coach, Richard Swygman. The next two games, the KoMets lost to Zumbrota here and then at Cannon Falls. The season did end on a favorable note, as the KoMets defeated Kenyon in the last game of the season. Co-Captains for the 1974 season were Jeff Wenz and Jeff Stevenson, who was named to the Hiawatha Valley All- Conference Team for the second straight year. Quarterback Jay Kellar averaged 11.4 yds. in passing, while Jary Gardner received 35% of his passes. Jeff Stevenson rushed for a high of 819 yds. On defense Kevin Behrns had the most tackles with 178 and Al Hodge was second with 167. Al Hodge averaged 15 yds. on kicks returns, while Jeff Stevenson had the high of 9.5 yds. in punt returns. Gary Dorschner had the high of 498 yds. in kicking with an average of 33 yds. a kick. Jeff Stevenson was named to the Hiawathia Valley All-Con- ference Team for the second straight year. The 1974-75 season held many firsts for the K-M girl's basketball team. First year Coach Beth Prorok, aided by Asst. Coach Kris Herbst, led the KoMets into the first season of interscholastic competition. A, B, and C teams were established and 10 conferance games were scheduled. The KoMets finished conference play with a 9-1 re- cord, putting them in a tie with Plainview for the HVL title. The 7th and 8th graders and the B-squad also had a fine season, with a record of 4-1 and 9-1 respectively. The team went on to District play, which ended in victory as the girls defeated Dover—Eyota, St. Charles, and Plainview for the Dist. Ill title. The KoMets then became the first K-M basketball team to go to State when they defeated Alden-Conger for the Region I title. The KoMets beat Braham in the quarterfinals of state, but fell to the fast, high-scoring, more ex- perienced Glencoe team (eventually state champs). The varsity squad tied with Stewartville for third place in the HVL conference, with an overall win-loss record of 3-5. B-Squad finished with a 2-6 record. Coach Prorok stated, In terms of win versus losses, the girl's first season of interscholastic volleyball competition may not be termed a huge suc- cess, but each individual, as well as the team as a whole, improved greatly. K-M was not picked as a favorite to repeat as HVL Champs, but as the season continued, the KoMets proved to be a well balanced team. K-M outlived the predictions by tying with Lake City for the HVL title. They ended their season with a 14-3 record in spite of the tough, aggressive competition in the HVL league. K-M, seeded number two, made it to District III finals by defeating Dover-Eyota and Dodge Center before falling to number one seeded Winona-Cotter. The KoMets finished the season with an over-all record of 19-4. The KoMets are coached by Mr. Bill Heitkamp and assisted by Mr. Vern Huse. Steve Miller had the highest field goal average for the season with 52% and Marlin Fay was second with 51%. Gary Dorschner and Jim Gardner tied in free throw percentage with 81. The leading scorers were Nev Corlett and Gardner with averages of 19.8 and 13.6 respectively. Lee Meyer had the most assists for one season with 123. Al Hodge had the most rebounds with 151 and Gardner was second with 150. Corlett had the most recoveries with 163. He was also honored with the season high of four technical fouls. Offensively, Mark Unger and Kevin Behrns were the leading scorers with 12.4 and 11.0 point per game averages. Mark also led the team in assists with 64. The team leader for offensive re- bounds was Jack Falkenhagen. An area that needed much improve- ment through the year was defense, and using a combination of defensive patterns made them a stronger team. The team made a good showing in all of their tournament action. K-M was also honored with many individual placings at those tournaments. In the Ellendale tournament seven wrestlers placed. The Morristown tournament was quite a success, with eleven wrestlers placing; three being firsts. The District III tournament proved successful for K-M as five individuals went on to the Regional meet. Still placing, K-M walked away with a third from Craig Schmoll, two fourth places from John Allen and Mark Grunklee, and a sixth place spot from Steve Schmoll. The twelve returning letterman look promising for another successful season next year. K-M also has promising wrestlers coming up from 13- Squad. The B-Squad had a record of 7-5 for the sea- son. They did very well at the Kenyon tournament. Individually, Clare Fjerstad remained undefeated throughout the season with a 12-0 record. KoNets Claim District III K-M finished it's season with a 8-6 record, and a 2.9 per game score average. The KoMets were led by the crafty pitching of senior, Jon Yusten (nicknamed Hondo ), who had a E.R.A. of 1. The KoMets having no baseball diamond to practice or play on started slow but soon became accustomed to the away games and started play- ing great defensive games. First-year Head Coach Phil Johnson, came up with a bunt and run strategy which helped K-M win the District III semifinal 3-1 over Rochester Mayo Spartans. Yusten was the K-M pitching staff, who's record was 7-5. According to Coach Johnson, Jon's control is the thing he does best. He mixes up his pitches real well. K-M fell to the Red Wing Wingers in the District Championship game at Winona by the score of 3-0. The KoMets went with what worked for them all season and that was to push each runner up a base. But things didn't go their way with the Wingers; K-M saw two of their chances to score snuffed out at home plate. One—Lee Meyer in the first ending had singled and sacrificed to second, but was thrown out at home after Jay Erickson delivered a single to center. Two—After one out in the fifth, Yusten walked and Jay Kellar doubled. On the Wingers first pitch, pinch runner Gary Severance was snubbed out by 10 feet at the plate. Ron Carlson is congratulated by his fellow team members as he runs towards home after his grand-slam. Ronnie was named the team's most valuable player and leading hitter with an average of .285. From each something is gained, from each something can be learned. Homecoming ’74 Homecoming '74 began on Sept. 23 with the start of building the floats and making murals. Wednesday night was coronation with 'Sunshine' as the theme. Wanda Krieg and Steve Jurrens sang 'Sunshine on my shoulders'. Master of ceremonies, Dan Berge, introduced the royal court as they proceeded to 'The Grand March' played by the senior band. Co-captains of the football squad, Jeff Wenz and Jeff Stevenson, gave a short talk on the meaning of Homecoming. Following their talk, 1973 Homecoming Queen Lynette Skogen gave her relinquishing speech and wished the football team the best of luck in their game against Lake City. After much suspense, Lynette crowned Nev Corlett as our new King and he then crowned Susan Schleeter 1974 Homecoming Queen. Together they read the proclamation. Afterwards, everyone went outside for the bonfire, which was organized by the sophomore class. Everyone cheered by the blazing bonfire and created spirit and anticipation for the Friday night football game. Friday afternoon was the pepfest and the parade. The juniors won the Spirit Paddle at the pepfest this year. Friday night it was announced that the juniors had also won first place for their mural and the sophomores won first for their float. Even though we did not win the football game, the KoMets fought hard and we were proud of our guys. The dance Sat. night was enjoyed by everyone with 'A New Dawn' as the theme and 'Natural Spring' provid- ing the music. Art Adventures At K.MHS THE ARTIST Who am I? You ask. I am an artist; I replied. I'm not famous, though an artist just the same. I take a pencil and some paper and create beautiful images only an artist could create. I take a lump of clay and form it into an object of unreality. I take some string or some yarn and weave it into a gorgeous pattern of life. I create with my hands using my mind as a guide. Maybe someday I can dip my magical brush into something called peace, and paint it all over the world. —Eileen Kanigher K-M Art Department held its annual Art Exhibit May 20th at 7:00 p.m. in the high school gym. We all dream of great deeds and high positions away from the pettiness and humdrum of ordinary life. Yet success is not occupying a lofty place or doing conspicuous work; it is being the best that is in you. Rattling around in too big a job is worse than filling a small one to overflowing. Dream, aspire by all means; but do not ruin the life you must lead by dreaming pipe dreams of the one you would like to lead. Make the most of what you have and are. Perhaps your trivial, immediate task is your one sure way of proving your mettle. Do the thing near at hand, and great things will come to your hand to be done. If you can't be a highway then just be a trail. If you can't be the sun be a star; It isn't by size that you win or you fail — Be the best of whatever you are! —Douglas Malloch BOY ATHLETE OF THE YEAR- James Gardner. 1975 Boys American Legion Citizenship Award—Lee Meyer.
