The paper gave the protestors at the sit-in something to pass their time with until their parents came to take them home. Students rush to pick up a copy of the KOMETEER. The Kometeer was published by three different staffs this year. First semester, Mrs. Cutting's Basic Composition and Creative Writing classes put the paper out. Second semester, the Journalism class took over. For the first time, the school paper was free to everyone in the Mantorville Middle School as well as the Junior and Senior High School. This was done on a trial basis for the first few issues and was successful. It was a common sight to see the halls filled with people reading the KOMETEER on paper day. Carol Lyons hurries to find her answer in the 'Dear Donna' Column. KOMET STAFF The 1974 KOMET went through more improvements this year, beginning with a change of companies. We switched from Taylor to Paragon Yearbooks, a division of Herff Jones. The staff also designed its own cover for the first time in K-M's history. Another first was the fact that the annual was financed on its own. The staff didn't go out and solicit ads in the community. Instead they sold Go Komets buttons, designed by our adviser, during wrestling and basketball tournament season. Huneke Studio of Waseca, Minnesota provided free photo services. The 8 were: Sue Jensen, Mary Durst, Linda Kleist, Kevin Muprhy, Don Ramthun, Brian Herbst, Jon Yusten, Dennis Iverson and the FFA Barbershop which consisted of: Dan Buehler, Dennis Iverson, Steve Jurrens, Marlin Fay, Jon Yusten, Brian Herbst and Cary Dorschner. 5 of the 9 received stars, and on May 4, traveled to Cannon Falls for the Region competition. Though none of them received a star rating, every one did a fine job. The choir concluded their year with a coffeehouse theatre concert on May 24. Something new was added to the choir this year. With two of their selections, they used a bass guitar, played by Steve Jurrens; rhythm guitar played by Kim Rock and trap set played by Joe Samms. At the conclusion of the concert, the senior class presented Mr. Gentes with a gift for all his efforts during the year. Susan Schleeter, Cindy Madery and Brenda Klossner were the Row one: R. The practices during the summer and during the school week proved to be helpful. The band received many complements throughout the year. On Saturday, March 30, the District III solo and ensemble contest was held in Pine Island. The following received stars on their instrumental solos: Becky Gronvold, Carol Englestad, Terry Pike, John Collins, and Kevin Murphy. The trumpet trio, composed of Wanda Krieg, Marlin Fay, and Jeff Wenz, also received a star rating. The District III band clinic was held on Saturday, April 5, in Lake City. On May 4, thirteen K-M music students traveled to Cannon Falls for the Region-State Music Contest. The following eight band students had advanced from the District competition in hopes of receiving an A rating: Terry Pike, Becky Gronvold, John Collins, Wanda Krieg, Marlin Fay, Jeff Wenz, Carol Engelstad, and Kevin Murphy. Seven of the eight received star ratings, the highest award attainable in solo competition. All of the band members represented our school very proudley and in doing so brought home more star ratings than K-M has ever earned in one year. The annual Pop Concert was held Tuesday night, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. The junior band opened the evening, and then a few of the individuals who received stars played their solos. There was an intermission which the band parents set up. At the conclusion of the program Mr. Schwen presented Kevin Murphy the John Philip Sousa Award. Several organized trips were made to Welch Village in Welch, Minnesota with no reported injuries during the outings. The club was open to anybody in grades 7-12, which enabled them to obtain lower rates at the ski lodge if they had a group of 45 or more. The boys began their pre-season practice on August thirteenth at eight o'clock in the morning and again at seven in the evening. One of Kasson-Mantorville's most out- standing games was with Dodge Center. We went into three over-times and won by a score of 24-18. This year we had three All-Conference players. First team was Jeff Stevenson and second team was Scott Lampland and Mike Haapala. There are eleven seniors who came out and made a fine showing. The prospects for the upcoming year look very promising. We have many fine sophomore and junior athletes to give the KoMet's a boost. The following is the total defensive points that were made during the 1973 football season. This is an ex- ample of some of the fine work our boys did throughout the season. Al Holtan missed several meets and Jeff Wendler was out for the last half of the season, which prevented him from being all-conference. They lost five lettermen off of last year's team, but the future outlook is good, as they have five returning lettermen back next year. They earned their esteem by hard work and spirit shown throughout the year. A and B squad practiced twice a week during the season and their spare time was spent making posters to boost school spirit. Before many of the games they fired up the players by having pep- fests. When tournaments came around they did an excellent job of representing our school. To make money, the cheerleaders had a soc hop, donut sale and set up a bake sale at Farm-to- Market Days. The money they earned was spent paying for the supplies they used for making the spirit posters. Only two cheerleaders attended the summer camp this year. They were Susan Schleeter and Sarah Brandli. We hope that next year more can attend, and be just as successful at promoting school spirit as this year's cheerleaders were. We hope to see more of you girls at try-outs every year to arouse enthusiasm and to back the team. Matching poise, discipline and consistent play with hard practice hours, the squad had an up-hill season to repeat as HVL champions. The team had their first loss to Lake City, but it took four overtimes to decide the issue 56-58. K-M's second loss was to St. Charles 49-58. The rematch at the end of the season put pressure on the KoMets when St. Charles jumped off to an early lead, but the KoMets forced the Saints into several key turnovers as K-M rolled to a 59-49 victory before standing-room-only crowd. Engineering the KM start was head coach Mr. Heitkamp as he again masterminded KM into a league lead. Assisting him were Mr. Huse and Mr. Cordes. KM fell to Lake City in 4 overtimes, 58-56 and to St. Charles, 58-49, to make the HVL an 'honest' affair of the conference title. Returning to early season form, the locals ran up 8 more victories without faltering. Braving injuries and winter's flu epidemic, KM hurdled major obstacles while out-scoring their rivals, on the average, by 15 points. Notable among those were an 11 point rematch victory over a surging L.C. crew and a satisfying season championship final on the St. Charles court, KM victorious, 59-49. With the conference title secured, KM entered the tough district schedule hoping to repeat as AND SCHOOL CLOSER TOGETHER. champions. Early lop-sided wins over Dodge Center and Stewartville vaulted KM into a title battle with Lake City in early March. However, much to the remorse of tearful, loyal fans, the Komets fell, 53-49, to the resurgent Lake City Tigers, and a new District III Champion was crowned in 1974. But, amidst painted signs, pepfests, community support, conference and district playdowns, bands, kids, coaches, wins, and heart- breaking losses, the locals fought gamely for their goals, not achieving in the end, yet proving that they had tried bravely, as champions indeed. Notable in team statistics was the play of senior Scott Lampland, a four-year performer, who set school records in the total points, number of 40- plus performances, and stylized KM play these past seasons. Complementing his work was playmaker Greg Bartel, Jim Gardner, Brian Herbst, and Nev Corlett. 1973-74 CRAPPLERS COME ON STRONG!!! The wrestlers put in an excellent season this year with a 9-2 record. The team wrestlers were led by co- captains Dan Rendler and Randy Fjerstad, to come in second in the conference, and third in the HVL Tournament. Six of the members of the team were named to the all conference team: Mark Koebele, Klaus Alberts, Dan Rassmussen, Craig Schmoll, Dan Rendler, and Mark Crunklee. In the District III Tournament, many of our guys placed high in the finals. Dan Rendler finished first; Mark Grunklee, third; Craig Schmoll, fourth; and Mark Koebele, fourth. In the Region I Tournament, Dan Rendler finished fifth. Dan Rendler had the most team points—42 (dual meets only), Dan Rassmussen had the most pins—5, and the quickest pin went to Craig Schmoll—35 seconds. B-squad ended their season with a fine 8-3 record. They worked hard all during the season, and were rewarded for all their efforts. Wayne Alberts was the high scorer for the team with 51 team points, Pat O'Brien was second with 48 team points, and Jim Heiserman was third with 45 team points. We shall have a fine team returning next year to take the place of the guys who graduate. K-M's Junior High Wrestling had a very good year with 7 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. All of the boys did their best to make their team a winning one, and they succeeded. Jeff Berge had the highest team points with 29, Mark Brannan was second with 27, and Jon Berge was third with 25 team points. The coaches for all of the squads were Perry King, Mike Morris, and Dennis O'Leary. 73 Grapplers Wrestle Their Way to Regions Row One: Klaus Alberts, Steve Schmoll, Larry Kimble, Jeff Vanasse, Grunklee, Dan Rendler, John Allen, Dan Rasmussen, and Coach Perry Dick Wyttenbach. They were at school every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning at 6:30 because of the conflict with the boys basketball practice after school and in the evening. There were several scheduled playdays. February 16, the girls traveled to Kenyon and found that they needed to work harder if they wanted to win. Their extra practice hours paid-off when they traveled to Stewartville on March 9. Yet success is not occupying a lofty place or doing conspicuous work; it is being the best that is in you. Rattling around in too big a job is worse than filling a small one to overflowing. Dream, aspire by all means; but do not ruin the life you must lead by dreaming pipe dreams of the one you would like to lead. Make the most of what you have and are. Perhaps your trivial, immediate task is your one sure way of proving your mettle. Do the thing near at hand, and great things will come to your hand to be done. If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill. Be a scrub in the valley—but be The best little scrub by the side of the rill; Be a bush if you can't be a tree. If you can't be a bush be a bit of the grass; And some highway happier make; If you can't be a muskie then just be a bass— But the liveliest bass in the lake! We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew, There's something for all of us here. There's big work to do, and there's lesser to do. And the task you must do is the near. If you can't be a highway then just be a trail. If you can't be the sun be a star; It isn't by size that you win or you fail— Be the best of whatever you are!
