Individual Efforts High Head coach Mr. Sylvester and his assistants, Mr. Swygman and BM team coach Mr. Ginther, did not experience a winning season. However, this is not to indicate a non profitable year. Whenever the team, met irregardless of their small numbers and lack of upperclass leadership, they seemed to profit by their work. They practiced from hot August days to cold, wet October evenings only to end up in the HVL cellar. Yet, they learned fundamental football and a degree of its execution. It's this latter idea which keys Komet hopes to an encouraging 1972 pigskin year. As well, a very exciting year was encounted in the junior high program. Under the able leadership of Mr. King, the grade eight team well outdistanced all its foes, except a very strong Stewartville squad. Several outstanding individual offensive perform ances, and consistent, sound defensive play marked the season. A final note goes to the seventh grade squad under Mr. Gille. Barring a slim loss to rival Byron, the seventh graders whitewashed all oppenents on defense, and played well-executed offensive foot- ball. Their season was an a equal complement to that of the eighth grade. The Tackle! ! Grab the Ball! ! ROW 1: D. Kimble, D. Andrist, K. Murphy, D. Rassmussen, M. Olson, G. Johnson, M. Zelinski, J. While the cheerleaders did their best in cheering for the squads, they had a poor season. The team points weren't the best but the individual wins made it worth- while. B-Squad cheerleaders had to keep an eye on both B and C squads and keep the spirit going on both mats. All three squads enjoyed oranges after they were through wrestling. Besides cheering, the A-squad baked a cake and brought it to the meet on Mr. King's birthday. Practice, Practice, Practice. TOP TO BOTTOM: R. Luck, C. Finley, P. Owens, and M. Hoehn. They learned cheers and got new ideas on how to improve their cheering and school spirit. To raise money for uniforms, the girls shined shoes at the fair and sold caramel apples. All year they practiced hard for their winning and losing teams. It was worth it, as their many practices were rewarded by some great victories in basketball. Both A and B squad cheerleaders put in as much practice time to work on their routines as the boys who participate in athletics. Each girl had the honor and privilege to represent K-M at all athletic events therefore, her sportsmanship and personality carried the value of Kasson-Mantorville's name wherever she went. For example, the young Ko- Mets averaged 40. 8 pts. a game while their opponents averaged 29. They outrebounded their foes 28 to 16. In fact, they were never outrebounded in a game. They averaged 17 recoveries a game, many resulting from their pressing defense. The three losses suffered during the season were to Wells, Pine Island, and Kenyon. The last two losses were by a total of 4 points. The 23 point triumphs over Byron and Zum- brota were the widest winning margins. The narrowest was the 3 point victory at Lake City. Some of the individual honors went to: Greg Bartel, best free throw percentage (40 for 57) 70%; Scott Lampland and Garth Fer- gel best field goal percentage 48%; and Garth Feigel most rebounds 151 and most recoveries 59; Lynn Musolf the least turn- overs.
