“
The empty halls echo as seniors walk through their silhouetted doors. The walls echo not only the sound of their footsteps but also the sounds of their laughter and tears, their fears and joys; all the memories of six years of life. As the senior looks down these halls he sees more than lockers and doors. It is almost as though the halls knows what he is thinking. The halls know about the memories; the KOMETS, the teachers, 3:34, the classes, the bells, the feel of the cool wind blowing across the brightly-lit football field, the wet dew on the grass in first-hour phy-ed, the infectious spirit of basketball games, the long hours of practice for sports, study hall passes, pep fests, Mr. Ozbun, lockers slamming, the morning announcements, the endless meetings, slumber parties, broken romances and going steady , the noon stampede, snow days, laps around the football field, spring fever, Blue-and-White-Days, homecoming, skip-day, the cry of the cheerleaders ringing through the halls, Mr. Swygman standing up against the door to 207, class rings, prom, and the planning for prom, class plays, Buckle Down, and classmates, friend or foe, the kids he has been going to school with for almost his entire life, but may never see again after graduation. The halls and the Senior remember these things silently, and the halls know that the Senior is ready to graduate, even eager. Yet.. . saying good-bye to something as indescribably precious as the memories of even the routine days of high school is something very, very painful and very, very, lonely, because the Senior never knew what it was really all about until it was over. With this in mind, I dedicate this annual to the Great Class of Nineteen-Hundred-and-Seventy. A fellow classmate and editor The editors would like to add a special note of appreciation to Mr. Donald Vang, for his help on this annual and for being a great friend. The editors would like also to express the theme of this annual and express an opin- ion. One picture is worth a thousand words, and this annual, like this school, belongs to the students. 2 Baseball Cheerleading Cross-Country HOMECOMING '69 TRY TO REMEMBER! . . . FOOTBALL! . . . Though the student council proposed many new ideas at the beginning of the school year, such as a student lounge, tlie only real issue it settled was that of the dress code. The new dress code stated that anything could be worn, in- cluding slacks for girls, if worn with modesty and shoes. Though many of the teachers advo- cated that blue jeans resulted in sloppy thinking, the students quickly adjusted to tlie new ruling, and there were very few violations. No one really seemed to know the reasons behind the sit-in pictured, but in the end it re- sulted in tlie administration protesting tlie stu- dent's rights to protest and the students protesting tlie administration protest. The only way tlie ad- ministration could break up the sit-in was to threaten to take away that night's football game. Whatever it proved or failed to prove, it proved a change-of-pace ! 23 STANDING: B. O'Brien, J. Phelps, J. Gardner, B. Bordelon, J. Erickson, L. Meyer, T. Severance, L. Keller, V. Durst, M. Olson, S. Bucholz, D. Pickett, J. Huse, C. Hoadley, M. Torkleson, C. Swalla, A. Ferry, B. Moen, L. Fjerstad Once upon a time there were some cheerleaders in a distant land known as K-M High School that decided to conjure up some spirit for their Homecoming Week. These cheerleaders, great spirit-conjurers that they were, decided it would be a feat for all of the football cheerleaders to stand on the shoulders of the football players, and then have their picture taken. The football players, being gallant gentlemen and also great spirit-conjurers, especially when it came to girls, courageously offered their shoulders. After some debate about who was going to stand on whose shoulders, they all posed in the picture above. However, not all the football players at this distant land were the gallant gentlemen they seemed, for the minute the picture was snapped, almost all of the football players stepped out from their positions and left the enthusiastic cheerleaders hanging in the air. As some of the girls started jumping to the ground the goalpost started falling, until it was eventually on top of the heads of the by-now-dispirited cheerleaders. Jeannie Phelps was knocked out, and everyone was once again ex- cited. Vicky Durst, always the first to remain cool in a hot situation went racing up to the school to get some help. In the racing she managed to trip over a chain fence, break her glasses, and get her eye cut badly enough to require eight stitches. By this time the cheerleaders looked like they had played the Homecoming game, minus pads or helmets, and lost. The cheering was perhaps a bit quieter on Homecoming night than it would have been in normal cir- cumstances, for several of the cheerleaders had very bad headaches. Though the spirit of the cheerleaders was somewhat dampened, most of the school agreed that the idea had added some excitement to Homecoming Week. 35 Odds And Ends Pam Gellert Alan Dorschner Mary Sue Andrist Deb Carter Dean Fiegel Outstanding Best Actor John Phillip Best Actress Athlete Art Award Sousa Award of the year. Carter Blaine 1970's class ring Our Worthwhile-Mentioning Page Many events worthwhile mentioning happened at K-M during the year. Here are some of them. K-M's curriculum was changed. Juniors and seniors were offered a wide choice of English and social science courses, ranging from Shake- speare to Drama and Theatre, and from psychology to Afro-Asian stud- ies. By far the most popular new class was mass media, who, besides taking several combined second and third hours to watch films like Charlie Chaplin and High Noon , took off a couple of afternoons to go and see The West Side Story and Airport . Eighth hour was added. This half hour at the end of the day was used wisely by some, unwisely by some, but however one looked at it, it was handy to use for pepfests, relaxing, and planning for the next day. Prom's theme was A TIME FOR US . It was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Rochester. The Queen was Mary Sue Andrist and the King was Dave Leth. Homecoming queen was Diane Fjerstad. Ornamental Horticulture, another new class, built a greenhouse and tried its greenthumbs. The Drama Club, one of K-M's most ambitious clubs, held an egg drive, sold pickles at basketball games, presented the drama The Crucible , and built itself some flats with the money it made. The FHA, who somehow managed to lose money selling Christmas cards, had a slumber party which was invaded by only one member of the fearsome sex. In case Mrs. Carter, who chaperoned, is still wondering, the Noise heard at the end of the hall by the biology room was Jay Lampland, as truebloodedly daring as ever. The French Clubs made themselves a French supper (complete with wine) and had a banquet. The Lettermen bought a pitching machine with the money they made from concessions. The FTA went on a trip to the cities and toured two junior high schools, one rich and ultra-modern, and the other one of the worst in the cities, where real policemen patrolled the halls. Baccalaureate was held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kasson on June 7. The cheerleaders sponsored a Spring Fling week and a Sadies Hawkin's dance. Friday of the dance girls had to be slaves to their dates. On Earth Day several students and teachers (including Mr. Ozbun and Mr. Bentson) picked up litter On the highway between Kasson and Mantorville. The juniors went over their goal in their magazine drive. During Homecoming, seniors won the skits, and sophomores won the murals. The goalposts fell on the cheerleaders' heads while taking annual pictures two days before Homecoming. Jeanette Gardner and Pam Brakke were co-editors of the Kometeer. Ornamental horticulture took a trip up to the cities to tour some greenhouses. Mass media went up to the cinerama at the cities. ( AIRPORT ) Advanced math classes and data processing classes toured IBM one morning. The Komets won the West Sub-district trophy in the basketball tournaments, only to be downed by the John Marshall Rockets, defending state champions. Unfortunately we lost the Little Brown Jug in football. We plan to get it back next year. The dress code was changed. After a few days of adjusting it seemed perfectly natural for girls to wear slacks (which are much more comfortable than dresses) and shorts helped along the spring fever. Honor students were as follows: Bruce Bordelon, Pam Brakke, Jon Erickson, Jeanette Gardner, Mary Hoppe, Dave Keller, Linda Olson, Mike Peterson, Tom Severance, and Mark Vail. The GAA got involved in GARA basketball. They got beat by Pine Island, then fired up and walloped Zumbrota. Many thanks to the managers of the various sports. Their work is essential but recognition is minimal. Mike Peterson made All-Conference in baseball. Athletic director for the year was Mr. James Sands.
