The art fair at the end of the school year combines not only many hours of hard work, but, a part of each in- dividual who has tried to express and record his personal and instinctive reactions to all kinds of stimuli through different medias. The aim of art education is to awaken the student's vi- sual curiosity so that he can readily express himself through art; to encourage him to deepen his awareness of the objects around him, and to improve his ability to re- spond through different art medias to these objects. The guest speaker was Rev. Collins from the Congregational Church in Mantorville. He spoke on the necessity of the four virtues: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Charac- ter. Then the officers of the society gave their in- terpretations of the four virtues. The tapping ceremony followed. The officers went into the audience and tapped the new members. Mr. Ozbun presented the members for induction to the Superintendent, Mr. Carter, who read the oath and swore the new members into the society. This concluded the induction ceremony. A tea was held the following week. Parents, faculty and the administration were invited. Both old and new members of the Society pre- sented a talent show. Mr. Kraft presented the membership certificates and the new officers for the coming year were installed. Smiles and a few tears are shed. 20 Margo lights the candle of character. Wilson is an experimental school for students ages 3-18, conducted by Mankato State College. The schedule was based on modules and varied from day to day. Several languages were offered to all students, as were classes such as industrial arts and home econom- ics. Annual Staff The hard working staff that created this year's Annual put many long hours into its production. The co-editors were Linda Hrabik and Mary Anderson, with Debbie Stenstad being of great assistance. The An- nual Staff consisted of juniors and seniors that planned the pages, took the photo- graphs, wrote the stories and got the adver- tisements. A workshop that several attended in the fall helped a great deal with the planning. A central staff consisted of four seniors and two juniors, the co-editors, Debbie Sten- stad, Les Rosecke, Jeanette Gardner and Sue Selle. They planned the details while the rest of the staff each did their assigned tasks. Bringing everyone's work together resulted in our 1969 Annual. L. Many of the Drama Club members were actual cast members and other members were busy behind the scenes helping the cast members by supplying props, setting up the set, produc- ing stage lighting and sound effects, helping with make up, and publicizing the plays. The National Thespian Society members are generally chosen from the Drama Club members because they must be actively participating in drama events. The Drama advisor gives the participants a certain number of points for each play they participate in. A minimum of 10 points is required by the National Thespian Society before a student may become a member. Drama club had forty-three members this year. Officers were: President, Dave Hermann; Vice President, Debbie Carter; and Secretary-Treasurer, Joyce Brekke. 33 Drama club members participate in fall play. SEATED: D. Hairsine, D. Larson, C. The climax of the program was the tour of the Minneapolis Art Insti- tute where each student could see an actual painting by the artist he had studied. The Junior club became acquainted with people in the French history, as well as the people who live in France, but have not been fully integrated, such as the Basques. Each meeting of both clubs includ- ed a report, a current event, rec- reation in French, and refresh- ments. Mrs. Earl Bartel was adviser for the two clubs. Jr. French Club 36 SEATED: G. Zelinske, B. Induction, the most important moment to an NHS member. Membership in the National Honor Society has become recognized nation- ally as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student. Membership is, however, more than an honor; it carries with it a responsibility and should be considered the beginning of an obligation. Once elected a student should continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities which brought about his selection, and also continue to exert a new influence to improve conditions about him and promote those quali- ties, Leadership, Character, Scholarship, and Service for which the Na- tional Honor Society stands. Lettermen Run Concessions Again To Earn Money The Lettermen ran the concessions this year again, a job which consists of making and boxing popcorn and selling refreshments to spectators before the game and half- time. The vending of popcorn during the game was tried during tournaments and proved quite successful. The money they made will go to buy tapes for the video tape machine which was used frequently through the year. The remaining money will go into an electric football scoreboard fund. During some of the meetings the ath- letes were presented their letters by Mr. Swygman. Future Teachers Of America - This is the best part of the whole meeting! 42 K-M Chatfield Exchange Students Exchange Students This year, the club wrote a new constitution up dating the point system for awards, and making attendance obligatory. Each student who qualified for an award had to spend one hour a week in duties related to the teaching profes- sion. Some tutored individuals, did clerical work, observed classes, or did substitute teaching. Each student was evaluated by the supervising teacher. Guest speakers at the club meetings were two prospective teachers from Luther College, a School Board member, the principal and the superintendent of KMHS. Installation of Officers was held in the library in an impressive candlelight ceremony. Faculty nd parents were guests at the tea. During the year the club took part in the state exchange program, sending five students to be guests of Chatfield and in turn entertaining the same number in K-M homes. A dinner invitation from Mayo High School to hear the president of the Rochester School Board was accepted. Teaching Career Day was observed with students taking over classes for a day in either the grade school or the high school. The climax of the year was a trip to Mankato to visit Wilson High School and Mankato State College. Mrs. Earl Bartel was club adviser. ROW.l: J. Leth, M. Musolf, P. Carney, J. Finley, A. Ferry, W. September and October found the band busy marching and preparing half-time shows for the football games. Attending the University of Minnesota Band Day was the highlight of the fall season. Three concerts, the annual Christmas program with the Choir, a Mid-Winter Concert, and the Pop Concert in the spring were presented during the school year. The Hiawatha Valley League clinic in March, District III con- test, and the All-Star Band Concert rounded out a busy year for the band. Band officers for the 1968-69 year were: President, Kip Gore; Vice-President, Dennis Prescher; Secretary-Treas- urer, Bruce Prescher; and the Class Representatives: Melodie Musolf (12), Mark Vail (11), Debbie Carter (10), and Sue Ann Ness (9). it ii 44 A one, and a two, and a. .. The Student Council once again set up Homecoming for the 1968-69 school year. One of the main points of business was the revising of the dress code. Other areas of discussion included the possibility of a foreign student coming to K-M in the future, and the many problems the students of K-M presented to the Student Council concerning some of the policies of the school. Lee Kellar presided over the meetings as President, with Jay Lampland as Vice-President, Joyce Brekke as Secretary- Treasurer, and Mr. Ozbun as advisor.
