Miss Lorraine Larson The KoMet Published by the Students of Kasson-Mantorville High School l FOREWORD Every year a class graduates and new seniors are made of old frosh, sophs, and juniors stepping into their shadows to take over their responsibilities, activities, and foolish and gay antics. And so on down the line.. .everyone changes. Time is a continual change of shadows. As we grow from seventh graders, our shadows lengthen and fall over ever-widening circles of activities until at last we come to that final high school day and graduation. To those who have seen us through these growing years and helped our shadows become what they are today, we express our deep appreciation. And to the students of KM, we leave our shadows for you to fill and grow into as you be- come seniors. Now, the 1965 KoMet. . .Shadows of a Year Gone By. With two hours of English each day, the seventh graders should have a strong background for the up-coming curriculum. One of the high-lites of this year was the trip to Mineral Springs. Also included may be the first float to be made for the Homecoming parade and the Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine dances. A. Aarsvold C. Anderson M. Andrist L. Baker D. Benedix C. Blaine B. Among them were the pep band and an attempted stage band, organized by Mr. Harlan Johnson. The pep band performed at the pep fests and at Homecoming coronation ceremonies. The musicians were kept quite busy throughout the year, rehearsing for the Christmas, winter, and pop concerts plus preparing numbers for the HVL band clinic and the District Band Contest in Dodge Center. This was the first time in several years that KM has been represented in the con- test and the band received two B plus ratings for their efforts. Solos by Kathy O'Brien and Diane Hanson, a drum duet by Vicki Marti and Rue Jean Brown received A's at the contest in Stewartville and Nancy Rud rated an A plus. Several members took part in the HVL All Star Band Concert at Lake City in November. Nancy Rud represented the band in Minnesota All State Band and she and Diane Hanson attended the Luther College Dorian Band Festival in March. The last performance of the school year was Memorial Day. The Junior Band performed at the Winter Concert and helped with ushering and ticket-taking. They also played at the Pop Concert besides waiting on the tables. Sophomore twirlers Kathy Swenson and Linda Weinknecht perform a Valentine routine. 41 BACK ROW: JKleeberger, C. Wulf, D. Junior Chorus The junior and senior choruses, under the direction of Gordon Gregersen, were said to have given the best performances that have been delivered by any KM chorus One of the first events of the year was the All Star Chorus Concert at Lake City. Ten members from KM attended. Besides the annual Christmas, the chorus taped an half-hour program which was aired over radio station KWEB from Rochester. This was the third year that the chorus has participated in the program. During the winter the group also attended the HVL Chorus Clinic held at Zumbrota. Included in the spring concert were many novelty numbers. Dry Bones, a Negro spiritual, was sung with the members of the chorus playing dif- ferent percussion instruments to represent the various bones of the body. A guitar, bongo drums, and cymbals served as accompaniments in other songs. Soloists this year were three seniors and one junior, Carma Tietje, Diane Larson, Jim Ellefson, and Diane Finley. Accompanist for the year was Dianne Wyttenbach. The junior chorus performed at both the Christmas concert with two songs and the spring concert with three songs. 46 Drama Club--BACK ROW: T. Players Study Shakespeare Studying Shakespeare, the Players early in the year each chose to be a character from one of the greater plavs of the master. Such names as Lady Macbeth, Portia or a witch from Macbeth were chosen. An initiation party was held for new members with everyone coming in costume. In February, the club held a clothing drive to gather costumes and props for future plays at KM. A play was being put together from the lines of the chosen characters at the end of the year. The organization also joined the National Thespian group. Advisor for the Players was Miss Judy Carlson and president for the year was Rue Jean Brown. The KM Derbettes performed this year at the Lake City basketball game after practicing dur- ing the fall and winter. Choreography was done entirely by th£ members themselves and then rehearsed under the leadership of Dianne Wyttenbach as captain and Doris Spilman as co-captain. Betty Hanson served as honor guard. The group had two new members this year but hopes to double the squad by next year. Besides half-time performances, the girls also march in parades during the summer. This year Le Cercle Francais was divided with the juniors and seniors hold- ing separate meetings. The meetings, which were held in various members' homes throughout the year, oonsisted of reports on such French artists as Renior and Degas. This study was completed by a trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, which was enjoyed by the combined group. Two parties were also attended by the combined group at Halloween and Christmas. The juniors closed their year of activities with a pot luck supper and bowling party. Club members relax at the Christmas party before refreshments, which included genuine French Christmas logs. The usual tournaments were held in the winter and early spring. Winning the junior tourneys in both events was the eighth grade team. In the senior high competition, the Footstompers, the junior team, held off the other grades. Working for pins, the feminine athletes also attended the meetings to play ping pong, jump on the trampoline, run relays or try their skill at tumbling. The Junior GAA held a party during which the Vibrations, the junior high combo, played. On December 4, they held their annual slumber party with the FHA. Advising the groups was Miss Judy Kidd. FHA Adopts Korean Orphan Combining fun and good will, the Future Homemakers of America completed a year of worthwhile activities, beginning with the District Six meeting attended by over 700 girls and presided over by the outgoing president, Sandy Webber. Kim Chung Sook, a Korean orphan girl, motivated the group for most of their fund-raising projects. She was adopted by the chapter this year and they send $10 every month for her support plus letters and special gifts. In December, the FHA'ers took Christmas gifts to the mentally retarded in Owatonna and also caroled for local shut-ins. The club again joined the GAA for the slumber party. Parents of the girls were also included in the round of activities. Daddy Date Night in March brought out the fathers for a night of fun and the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet con- cluded the year. Future Farmers Progress Last summer many of the boys with livestock projects exhibited at the area county fairs and climaxed the season by showing at the State Fair in September. The officers attended the fall leadership meeting at Dodge Center. The meats and livestock teams participated at the district contests at Austin in November. During the winter the judging team was sent to Albert Lea for the judging contest at the Spring Barrow Show. Some of the boys also exhibited hogs. Greg Phelps was in the district Public Speaking Contest and Bruce Carlson participated in the district creed contest. The chapter set up a display for National FFA week in February. Dennis Aarsvold and Greg Phelps attended the spring leadership meeting and the state convention held in St. Paul. The dairy judging team par- ticipated in the district contest at Lewiston. The banquet on April 24, with Maynard Speece as guest speaker, climaxed the year's work. Dianne Wyttenbach was named Chapter Sweetheart and Folmer Carlson received an honorary mem bership at the banquet. Two tours were taken by the thirteen girls. One, to Minneapolis, included a visit to the Minnesota School of Business, a courthouse trip where they witnessed traffic and criminal cases, dinner at the Skyways restaurant, and a tour of the Prudential Building. The group also later toured IBM in Rochester. For experience, the girls were able to work on Friday afternoons. In the spring, Gen Harris displayed several outfits complete with accessories at a tea to which the mothers had been invited. Future Teachers Go to Class Learning by experimenting was the rule of this year's FTA chapter. Members were able to become teachers for an hour, a week or longer in the subject they preferred to help them decide whether or not teaching suited them. Observation, then conferences prepared the student instructors for their classes. They learned not only how to pre- pare and correct lessons but also used various teaching techniques. After this prac- tice period, the teacher under whom they taught evaluated their work. Among other activities was the Guest Night on April 6, when the Stewartville Chapter was hosted. Mr. Harold Haugo guided the club in the 1964-65 activities. President Mary Smalley receives the club charter from Mr. Anderson at initiation ceremonies. Members enjoy a brief lunch after a meeting during which Miss Carlson was guest speaker. Speakers Talk Way Into BACK ROW: M. O'Brien, M. Johnson, J. Parkin, D. Fiegel. ROW 3: D. Hanson, K. Fuchs, K. Many were sidelined for short periods of time because of minor injuries in prac- tice or games. In an early game, Denny Segar, after attempting to intercept a pass from Quarterback Greg Holtz, was knocked off balance and broke his collar bone. This put him out for the rest of the season and part of the basketball season. The loss of QB Holtz just before Homecoming was another setback after which the team fought as hard as possible but could only score 2 TD’s in their remaining games. With a perfect 13-0 record for the season, the District III trophy, and sending four entries to the state, KM's grapplers ended the most successful season since their formation. They were also ranked tenth in the state during the regular season. Fans are not likely to forget the second victory over Rochester (26-21) in two years, once again coming from behind to win with the last few weights; an extremely close meet with Stewartville (20-19) for the conference championship which was left up to Hwt. Kirk Swenson. Swenson lost but kept from being pinned by the district champ by keeping one of his shoulders off the mat for the last forty-seven seconds of his match. Other unforgettable events are the cheering crowd as the KM team carried Coach Gabrych out to receive the District III trophy and the pride of having a wrestler in the finals of the state tournament. In the district tournament, Marv Mueske, Mark Hoehn, Neil Green, and Tom Ferry placed first; Joe Aarsvold, Dewey Olson, Larry Olson, Tim Murphy, and Captain Dick Swalla, second; Mike Pratt, third; and Kirk Swenson, fourth. Learning, You’re Through 55 Commencement 1965--Sixty-five seniors left K-M where they had made friends, worked and studied together or goofed off together since seventh grade. Many, thinking back, will remember the major events of the past several years. Things like the highly profitable magazine drive and the thrill and the hard work experienced during the rehearsals and the final performanees of both Jr. and Sr. class plays. Those involved will remember the hard work required to decorate the gym for their first prom, while all will remember the delightful surprise upon the first glance of the decorations for their last high school prom. Last of all they will remember the extra- curricular activities, primarily sports. LXir- ing the last six school years of their lives they have cheered for both winning and losing teams. On May 31, they found themselves listening to a mixed ensemble of ten senior vocalists and three senior speakers, John Parkin, Diane Hanson, and Becki Loquai, who delivered a combined message on tin past, present, and future. Then it was over and the seniors became alumni. TWO SENIORS AT WORK Moonlight and Roses ROYAL COURT Sharon Erath, Lowell Ranvek, Queen Betty Jo Nyfeler, King Dick Swalla, Sandy Webber, Mark Erickson Centered around a fountain and pool, the 1965 prom was held May 7 with the Underbeats providing the music. The gym was transformed for the seniors by the juniors into a beautiful rose garden under a softly glowing moon. Arches covered with roses marked the entryway to the tables where prom- goers enjoyed sand-bakkels, tasty sandwiches, or punch from the wishing well served by waitresses dressed in long pink dresses or waiters in handsome suits. Several couples took their turns at the garden swing after the crowning of Queen Betty Jo and King Dick by prom co-chairmen Shirley Engelstad and Ken Haack. Dennis Aarsvold served as master of ceremonies for the even- ing and introduced Bill Tietje, who sang Days of Wine and Roses, and Nancy Mickleberg, who presented the theme song. The senior class will was given by Nancy Rud and Kirk Swenson. Reading the prophecy was Greg Holtz. Following the prom, the annual banquet was held at the Hubbel House to conclude one of the most beautiful evenings of the year. Cast--T. Ferry, R. Redfern, J. Parkin, B. Vail, S. Brown, S. Erath, N. Rud, K. Swenson, S. Webber, R. Brown, K. Burgess, B. Hanson, B. Nyfeler, B. Lohrbach. “Dinny and the Witches” With ping pong balls hailing King Dinny, a real tree and live music, the stage was set for the presentation of Dinny and the Witches. The seniors, under the direction of Miss Judy Carlson, gave an outstanding performance for the audiences both nights. The witches, Dinny and Ben especially had severa-! truths in their lines about the values that the world holds and many lessons could be learned from the satirical production. 94 Crew--BACK ROW: B.
