The contest was held at Hamline University on April 16 and Greg Tweet received a superior rating in the discussion, What Should be the Tax Program for the State of Minnesota? . All eight regions were represented in the discussion; four received superiors and four, excellents. Greg appeared on television with the other three top contestants over Channel 2 on April 21. Danny Klement received the rating of superior, alternate to state, in the regional contest and would have given his oration at Hamline if the state contestant had not appeared. This band made fifty-two appearances during the school year which included pep fests, football games, basketball games, the Homecoming parade, assembly programs, concerts, and the district music contest which was held at Pine Island. Head majorette for the band was Susan Bearer who led the twirlers. They performed with the band at football games, a Pop concert, and various basketball games. The music department is new housed in beautiful new quarters that include a large rehearsal room, a storage room for instu- ments, uniforms, and equipment, a music office, and three practice rooms. The rooms are conveniently situated to give easy access to the stage for concerts and programs. The second band has twenty-nine members and is primarily a training group. Members of this band are promoted to the first band as they show good progress on their instruments. The second band made one appearance this year when it per- formed for a Christmas assembly in Mantorville. Thirty-two members make up the Sixth Grade Band. This group has balanced instrumentation and shears much promise for the future. It performed for the final P.T.A. meeting. Second Band Back Row: L. Erdman, J. Carlon, J. Reynolds, L. Lampland. The team won their first 13 games and dropped the 19th to a tough Kenyon quintet. The team then went on to win four sub-district and district contests before losing out in the finals of the district in a heartbreaking overtime game to Winona. The score in that game was 60-57. The team received a runner-up trophy for their performance as well as taking the conference championship with an unblemished 12-0 record. The team was lauded state-wide in newspapers after their upset vic- tory over Cannon Falls which was probably the most exciting game of the year and should set the stage for many contests in years to come. Gary Borchard, K-M stalwart center, was awarded all-state honors by WCCO radio’s Prep Parade as well as being named to the show’s 1957 - 53 Team of the Year. Borchard carried a 27 point per game average. Besides Borchard the club will be losing four other top- notch senior ballplayers in Bob Raddatz, Bill Ness, Jim Gonzagow- ski, and Don Sparks. Coach Dick Beetsch was also chosen by WCCO radio’s Prep Parade as Coach of the Week. Mr. Beetsch says of the team It was the greatest team I ever coached. It will be tough to see the seniors graduate; it always is. Next year, in the new conference, it will be l.ard, but the boys should play .650 ball. Junior High Football Back Row: N. Albertaon, M.
