A Touch of Class Manti High School has class. Throughout the entire year, students from Manti High ex- hibit a dimension of quality and commitment that goes unrivaled by other schools. There is a feeling of pride and prestige that dwells in the heart of every student and teacher, a feeling that has the deepest roots, a feeling of belong- ing to something of a higher status, a feeling of class. Freshmen usually get their first touch of class from the bottom of a garbage can. where one has time to ponder about such things as life, liberty, and the pursuit of dignity. Freshmen realize that they arc here to stay and must conform to the strange but classy rules of high school life. Sophomores, now a year older and wiser, quickly learn that class is an essential part of success, whether it be in the form of an auto- biography or a driver’s license. But these peo- ple arc only beginning to sec the true meaning of “class”. Juniors have class all their own. These test- taking. research-paper writing, and prom pre- paring citizens of Manti High School know the rules for survival. And if you ask any of them, they will tell you that class is mandatory for success. They also realize that they arc now uppcr-CLASS-mcn and nothing can take that honor away from them. Juniors now have new privileges but new responsibilities as well. For some, this means being a student body officer. powder puff player, or a girl or boy stater But it also means tedious hours of dedication and homework, and weeks of preparation for the Junior Prom. Seniors, for twelve years you have been pre- paring for this final chapter of your school ex- perience. No one knows about class more than you do. You have given your all, your best, to try to improve. Now it is time for reward. Ster- ling Scholarships, good jobs, and a feeling of pride and satisfaction arc yours, knowing that you have done more than merely survive; you have given Manti High School something spe- cial - a touch of class. 2 A Touch of Class A Touch of Class 3 4 A Touch of Class A Touch of Class 5 6 A Touch of Class A Touch of Class 7 1987-88 Student Body Officers As ihe rush for first period dies down. David’s voice greets us with a list of the day’s activities, many of which the studentbody officers arc responsible for planning. The homecoming events that we enjoy at the first of the year arc planned and prepared for us by the studentbody offi- cers. They arc responsible for finding out the wishes of the students and then trying to carry them out to the best of their abilities. One way that they arc able to find out what the student wishes are is to call student council meetings. Our officers include: President Dave Nielson. Vice Jason Maylctt, Secretary Danny where each organization is represented. In addition, they Luster and Activity Agent Mark Bennion. conduct our assemblies, plan M-day and encourage stu- dent morale. 8 Student Body Officers Classes DREAMS Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. After our graduation in May many of us will turn our backs and walk away. We can remember everything as if it were yesterday. As Freshmen we entered high school with the proverbial stars in our eyes. It was not uncommon to see one of us wandering aimlessly down the hall hopelessly lost. Soon, however, we all learned our schedules and most of us could journey from the Biology Lab to the Shop with relatively few mishaps. As Sophomores we were there to see our football team become a winning team. Many of us became involved in various activities; sports, drillteam, and chcerleading. as well as academics. Soon we were seeing many members of the class of 1988 beginning to come into their own. Our Junior year was filled with triumph. Who can forget the football game against the Richfield Wildcats in the last few seconds or the State Championship baseball game won against the Juab Wasps? None of us will forget the “Silent Night” of our prom, for it was truly a night to remember. Entering our Senior year, we were all filled with anticipation. This was it, the last of the best. We soon showed everyone we were serious as we became triumphant in lettcrlighting. Yes, this was our year and we were dominant! Showing without a doubt, in school and out. we’ve got class!! This helped them become more involved in extra curricular activities. The excitement of acquiring a drivers license hit a new high with them as they enrolled in drivers education. Spirits were soon dampened when they found out they had to wake up early to watch the lessons on TV and stay after school to take the tests, due to a new program. Y earbook Class In Clarion staffers choose A Touch of Class for this year's book theme. Action It is not a rare sight to see Mrs. Gardner, Mark, or David with cameras around their necks sliding in on the perfect shot to be put in the yearbook. Taking pictures is not all that is done for the year- book: there is a lot of planning that goes into recording a school’s his- tory. We must plan what each page will have on it and where that page will be in the book. We make decisions about the cover design, graphics and more. After this, the page is drawn, pictures are taken. and copy is written, typed and re- vised for the page. Our last step is to ship the pages to the publishers to be printed. Staff members include: Malissa Daniels, Dustin Hansen, Tiffani Jensen, Lea Jones, Laura McIn- tyre. Ms. Thompson, the advisor this year, organized a Sadie Hawkins dance, the first one in years. The dance was a big success with many couples in attendance. Ms. Thompson had a group of girls helping her to plan all of this year’s activities. The girls include: Jill Baker. Kathryn Stevens, Holly Mosher. Tri- cia Squire, and Cherrie Helsten. All the students who participated in F.H.A. had a blast and encouraged others to join. 58 FHA F.H.A. week started off with the Most Preferred Couples Assembly. After a season of great games for the players and the fans, the Templars ended up a close second in the region, never done before by a Manti team. They ended the year with a solid 5-3 record. The '87 team did everything they could to keep up the newly formed “winning tradition”. They won the battle. Football 67 Lady Templar Basketball This year’s girls basketball team had two players receive All-State Academic honors: Kaylcnc Birch and Holly Jorgensen. The team was a young one with only two seniors. Lady Templars played hard as a unit and matured as the year progressed, even though the win-loss record did not reflect this. With a new head coach and a young team, the competitors were often able to overpower the Templars. The team looks forward to a better season next year. Back row: Coach Bruce Teuscher. This year’s JV Girls Basketball team, headed by Coach Cathi Jarvis, did a lot of good things and gained much exper- ience. Even though the team did not win the majority of the games, the team enjoyed the season. The team looks forward to next year as they attempt to bring victories to Manti Girls Basketball. 70 Girls JV Basketball Although our J.V. team consisted of only sophomores and the teams they played against had juniors. Manti still came out with a 8 win-9 loss season. The coaches were Douglas Neeley and asst. Lynn An- derson. The coaches were a great help to the team as they helped the players pro- gress as the year went on. The J.V. team grew close together and the victories they shared were all team victories. J.V. includes- Tyler Bolli, David Stevens, Reynie Sandoval, Troy Cox, Mickey Cox, Gary Chadwick, Roger Cox, Terry Simons, Michael Brenchley, Jeremy Ba- ker, Nathan Graham, Spencer Allen. The freshman basketball season is a period of training so the boys can learn the rules of the game, how to work with a coach, and gain exper- ience by playing other teams. Manti can expect many promising players from this year’s freshman team. They were coached by Phillip Murray. Coach Braithwaite’s ability to produce a winning team didn't stop this year. The team’s accomplishments were many; the Templars while fighting injuries throughout the year, ended the season winning the majority of their games. They put forth a good showing in post-season tournaments, taking 4th in Region and 6th in State. For the last time Coach Wilbur Braithwaite led Manti to another successful basketball season. Tuesday started the week off with a cold night on the hill at letter lighting, as Seniors took first place. On Wednesday we were all privilcdged in seeing the Homecoming Queen Con- test in which there were eight contes- tants. Kim Shand was the reigning queen with Susan Anderson and Melody Nicholls as the attendants. The slave auction went well with the highest bid going for 55 dollars. Wednesday afternoon we watched the powder puff football game with the final score of 14-14. Thursday was J.V. football game with Manti being defeated. Then Thursday night at the bonfire the football team built a multi-level pyramid. The Manti- Ephraim ambulance did the annual burning of the opponent. Friday brought about the parade and the football game. The winning float be- longed to the Senior class. Each year the faculty chooses at least one girl and one boy out of the Senior Class whom they feel represents the best students in the high school. The faculty also chooses one or more students who is given the title of Tip Top Templar. This year’s Tip Top Templar was Melanie Rasmussen. Because so many talented stu- dents wanted to participate. MHS had more than as assembly's worth oj per- formances. Wasatch Academy and Juab High School obviously didn’t ob- ject at all because they clapped more loudly with each successive talent. The day was a hectic show-biz frenzy that most Templars enjoyed Bill Thompson headed up the event with Kristen Clark and Pehi Gardner assisting. The stage crew helped also between transporting props and setting up microphones and other sound equip- ment. See below to read about those who participated. John Liddell and John Hales introduced the assembly by using the Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood theme with Pee Wee Herman paying a visit Pee Wee and Mr. Rogers introduced each act and Lance Mendenhall, acting as Speedy Delivery, announced a few acts. Susan Sanderson and Beverly Mounteer started with a vocal duet, followed by Susan Anderson who sang ' The Rose . The next act was Kim Shand and Travis Schiffman who per- formed a piano-flute duet. Jolene Bagnail then danced a ballet, followed by John Hales doing Pee Wee’s infamous dance. Jenni- fer Fowles and John and Kori McCaul performed a vocal trio and were followed by Daniel Jackson and John Hales acting out a skit. Susie Bessey was next with a vocal solo, and was followed by Mark Bennion, Curt Barton. Cameron Bolli, Reynie Sandoval and Brandon Stuart giving a stirring rendition of a C ult song. A male ensemble sang an acapella version of Duke of Earl. Joyce Cluff and Erin Bagnall each sang a solo, the Cheerleaders danced. Jon Cluff and Christy Allen sang, and the Chamber Choir finished with a song. 94 Traveling Assembly Traveling Assembly 95 Late Nite was never like this. Who would have guessed that Manti High School’s Seniors could pull off an assembly filled with so much fun and excitement? Our host for the show was Mike Helsten with co-host Michael Jackson (actually Jason Maylett dressed as Michael). The two kept the audience laughing with Mike’s one-liners, and Jason’s portrayal of how bad Michael could be. Seniors definitely knew how to make a lasting impression as they ended the year with such a crazy assembly. Sherri 30 Index 115 In this book. we. the yearbook staff, tried to capture as many of the memories as we could. We realized that this yearbook could never hold all the treasured moments that had formed during the year. We hoped that we cap- tured those that bring others to mind. Thanks to all those who helped us in any way. whether it was giving us some needed information, cooperating with our demanding photographers, or restraining yourself when you were around Mrs. Debi” Gardner at deadline time. Congratulations to the band for taking all the honors at slate competitions. It took three years, but you did it . . . and Emery did not. We couldn't tell you this on your page because your pages were already at the plant. Kick Band and thanks for providing all that wonderful spirit at the games. We would be amiss if we didn't recognize two great coaches that left; Coach Wilbur Braithwaite and Robert Gent. Coach Gent pulled Manti out of one of the worst losing streaks in history, and within the course of three years, took us to the state quarter-finals. More importantly, he renewed Templar spirit in football. Thanks too. to Wilbur Braithwaite for always being there for students who needed that extra encouragement. Without you. we would not have needed that big trophy case with all the region and state wins in both basketball and tennis. Thank you for your poetry which is both inspiring and impressive. We give you the highest honor that we can. the acknowledgement that you are a true Templar through and through. Thanks also. Mr. Patterson, for listening to the stu- dents and putting up with the long hair and short pants. You have unified the school and given Manti High School that needed touch of class.” Written by David Call Dee Ann Svndergaard This year my students talked me into starting a new tradition at MHS.
