Are you ready for an even better school year? Templars had better be; the enthusi- asm felt in August is but a small portion of what is to come for the 1986-87 school year. So get ready, for the year means something different to each of you. To a freshman it means getting used to being the lowest classman. It means getting adjusted to new faces and being pushed around by the seniors and other upperclass- men. To a freshman it means having an abundance of extra energy which is often needed to get out of a garbage can. After their first year, the sophomores find that they are not getting away with as much as they did as innocent freshmen. They face new situations, such as. terrifying drivers’ education teachers, memorizing poetry and living in fear of the highway patrol as they turn sixteen and get their drivers’ licenses. As the year comes to an end. they focus on the challenges of the upcoming years. To a junior the school year means new and harder challenges. It’s the first year as upper- classmen with bigger responsibilities, harder classes, college-entrance exams, and if that’s not enough, most are worried about getting a date to the junior prom. Even though juniors have these new prob- lems. they also have priviledges that they have never had before. For some, this means a position as a Student Body Officer. For others, it means being a girl or boy stater, a varsity team member or part of the powder- puff team. By the end of this school year, juniors ask themselves, “Are we ready to be in charge next year?’’ Seniors, are you ready for your last time around? Do you realize this is your last year to enjoy school activities? Your last home- coming. your last game, your last club meet- ing? Are you ready for senior sluff and gradu- ation? Or how about becoming Sterling Scholars and going on to college or getting a job? Keep in mind that the final chapter of your high school years is coming to a close 2-ARE YOU READY? ARE YOU READY7-3 4-ARE YOU READY? StudcMt Body Offimi This summer our Student Body Officers at- tended a workshop in Lake Tahoe. As eager young freshmen we jumped right into high school life. Even though we were low men on the totem pole we proved to all that we would survive. We proved that we were ready for competi- tions by winning the letterlighting contest We were so excited for our girls’ basketball team as they took state We realized that being freshmen wasn’t so bad after all. Our sophomore year came with new confidence. We knew how things ran now. As the year pro- gressed. our class branched out. becoming involved in many activi- ties We sweated over Ulysses but came through with flying col- ors. Many sophomore girls partici- pated in queen contests and came out triumphant Also several soph- omore girls played on the volley- ball team which took region that year. Moving on to our junior year, we remember selling candy bars and thermometers to make our prom something to remember As the big night grew nearer, we found ourselves having nightmares of go- ing to the prom with our fathers, but the prom did turn out to be a success We also remember the sports highlights of our junior year. Our football team made it to the play- offs for the first time in many years Our basketball team took second in the state in which juniors played a significant part. Juniors also played a major role in helping our baseball team take second in state. As you can see. our class is dominate in sports. Now our senior year has come with great excitement We are now the leaders of the school trying to live up to our responsibilities. Our class found new spirit as we won the letterlighting once agam, the homecoming float and our powder puff game The years have gone by quickly This is not the end - only our beginning We are the class of '87; we will succeed! The people who were the most aware of this were the members of the prom committee. Those dedicated ones were: Kaylene Birch. Tammy Hansen, Merilee Francks and Kim Shand. The theme was Silent Night (song by Bon Jovi) and the dance was choreographed by Susan An- derson and Melissa Lanier. The juniors were led by the prom royalty in the traditional prom- enade. The royalty included King Larry Cox and Queen Su- san Anderson, First Attendants Craig Dodds and Karla Cutler and Second Attendants Jason Maylett and Kim Shand. The band which performed was London Bridge. The colors of silver, dusty rose and smoky blue made the prom decora- tions look elegant. JUNIOR PROM 109 Tk dm Of 1987 Valedictorian: Rachelle Ter- vort. Region Anil Ballcetbaffl The Manti High basketball team again did very well this season. It went into region tied with Emery for second, but by a toss of a coin. MHS play in third place. Manti's first region game was a win against Juab by a score of 63-47. That win put Manti in a semi-final game against Emery. The Templars played like champions, shutting down the Spartans’ offense MHS’s defense was strong, and the offense was unstoppable with Gary Cox making three-pointer after three-pointer. The win put Manti’s red and white against Richfield for the Region Championshp. MHS didn’t have the zip they had the night before so Templars took second. Tyler Nielson and Greg Stevens were named to the All- Region First Team and Ralph Squire was named to the All- Region Second Team Templars played Wasatch to begin state play MHS didn’t look like the red and white we all know, but after Coach Braithwaite’s half-time talk, the boys from Manti came back to beat Wasatch by five points in the last minutes of the game. This win put Manti in a game the next day with our rivals from the North - Lehi. The next day Manti looked the same as the night before, but the towering Lehi Pioneers shut the Templars down in the second half With the loss MHS played Millard for third or fourth place in state. Manti continued to miss those needed baskets, ending the season in fourth place. Don Naylor was named to the All-State First Team by the Deseret News. Coach Braithwaite asked the players to play as champions at the beginning of the season. The Templar basketball team certainly did. Glen Goodwin and Clair Erickson have both been teaching for more than 35 years, most of those years at MHS. Both were very actively involved in extra-curricular exper- iences, as well as in their classrooms. Glen had track, girls basketball, cross coutnry, and Dri- ver’s Education, Math, Health, and Economics. Clair guided the student body officers, all of student government, Close-Up and Model Unit- ed Nations, plus taught College History. Psy- chology, Sociology, and World and US Histor- ies. Both contributed to many classes and ac- tivities that are not mentioned in this present list of duties. Everyone at MHS and the community wish Glen and Clair a very happy retirement.
